Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

It’s like people can’t understand that the PANAMA canal runs right through wait for it …..the middle of the country of PANAMA. It’s the country of PANAMA that owns/runs it. Nothing to do with the US except they want to take it over and own it.

Not quite that simple…

When Teddy Roosevelt signed the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty in 1903, the country of Panama was just 15 days old. The isthmus had been ruled by Colombia, but the Colombian government was reeling from a bloody civil war. The Roosevelt administration saw an opportunity. The Americans promised to support a Panamanian bid for independence in exchange for the rights to construct the Panama Canal and operate it within a sovereign, U.S.-run Canal Zone.

Why the US Returned the Panama Canal | HISTORY

After decades of strained relations, treaties signed in 1977 paved the way to ending American management of the 51‑mile‑long waterway.

Anyway that's enough background in the history of the white settler state and its early slave owning racist presidents, Lincoln who came later was a racist too (1858 quote "I as much as any man am in favor of the superior position assigned to the white race), and T.Roosevelt showed zero remorse for the death of the Native people in 1886), so Trump is merely the latest in a long line of wretched individuals who lead the white settler entity. In fact he is benign in comparison.

If he does try to take Canada, Greenland, Panama canal (and being a settler state stealing land is why it exists) then he may put himself among the demons of history. None will touch jefferson though, the "monster of Monticello".

It's more likely that the tariffs will last about 5 minutes with Canada promising to patrol borders and stop not just the immigrants but the drugs coming across.

President Trump has already had one success with Columbia over immigration and deportees using Tariffs to motivate them and I expect the success with Venezuela was similar.

Are you for real? There are more drugs, guns and illegal Im migrants coming from the US to Canada. Let that sink in. Should we demand Trump build a wall and charge him for it?

Less than 1% of illegal imigrant come from Canada and less than 1% of phen goes from Canada to thr US.

We do patrol the borders hence the very low rates. Maybe the US can patrol them too.

Maybe turn off Fox News and get the facts.

Colombia unless you mean the US city

Colombia's objection was that the deportees were shackled, nothing to do with tariffs

This was the statue of the slave owning lyricist of the pro slavery national anthem in 2016 before it was torn down and replaced with 350 sculptures which now encircle the plinth of the empty monument, each to represent the first Africans kidnapped from Angola and transported across the Atlantic.

Nobody with any decency should be singing that pro slavery song. The black people have their own anthem "Lift Every Voice and Sing", its about time the others came up with something new as well.

The tariffs will last about 5 minutes- until US prices go up because there is a 25% increase in prices of all goods from Mexico and Canada and because there is a shortage of oil from Canada and their food prices go through the roof. The MAGA's are like the Brexiteers. They want to go back to the days of Empire/stealing land from Native Americans but then realise they cant do that anymore.

July 4th - Imperialism day. A day for whites to celebrate the subjugation, conquest and dehumanization of a people.

(Pro slavery) National anthem - (British tune) lyrics written by a slave owning tyrant Francis Scott Key with the 3rd verse (conveniently no longer sung) excoriating the slaves who fled the plantations of george washington and other slave owners in order to join the British and gain their freedom.

It worked well the first time around?

Studies have found that Trump's tariffs reduced real income in the United States, as well as adversely affecting U.S. GDP

And how is that wall coming along?

Not bad

…oops I misread I thought you were asking about the GDP.

As far as the wall it’s going as well as can be expected when it was blocked for four years. People were sued when trying to create their own barriers at no cost to the government, and the materials that were purchased were sold off as scrap thanks to the previous administration.

Look at this image of the elite planter class (jefferson, washington et al.). It's like a Ku Klux Klan convention. These slave owning "founders" and their racist white settler 'declaration' dehumanized the Natives as "savages", the "savages" being the owners of the land these imperialist, racist, slave owning tyrants had stolen.

The British are not responsible for the actions of Alexander Borgia, who divided the world up between Spain and Portugal, not the expanding northern European nations. Medieval popes tended to favour whoever could bribe them or had a sufficiently powerful army to counter Papal forces.

The point I was making was that after what USians call the French and Indian Wars, part of the treaty was that Britain would not pass the Appallachians. This the colonists objected to, as some were perforce moved from land they had taken.
The colonists on the eastern seabord of North America rebelled because they were asked to pay tax. The British had expended lives and money protecting them, after all.
The Boston Tea Party has more to do with keeping the price of tea high to benefit merchants than with freedom - we'd call what the Tea Partyers did the illegal action of a cartel now. The Boston Massacre was a small riot where several British soldiers - who were keeping the peace - shot some members of a crowd approximating 400 people who were throwing missiles at the soldiers. The American Rebellion was part of a larger war where the British fought the French and Spanish. It was French and Spanish troops who defeated the British, not the colonists. Which makes the annexation of California in the 1840s, by invasion, a bit thick.
It was the post-rebellion colonists who spread disease and war among the Native Americans of North America - NB many of those Native Americans fought for the British in the rebellion and again during the disastrous war of 1812, an attempt to annexe Canada, when the US was defeated.
I did not speak of European history, I spoke of some British history. The history you spoke of is known to me, it was not relevant to the point I was making.

Well anything done to the Native Americans prior to 1776 lands squarely on the shoulders of Britain. See the US did not exist prior to that. It was all Britain and the King.

The revolution was not about the Native Americans at all as already stated.

The tariffs are a stick to get border control. It worked in his first term and it will work again. The US will also likely end up with better trade deals in the end.

The tariffs will likely not have that big of an effect on a good portion of the manufacturing trade with Mexico that the US has a stake in due to the Maquiladora arrangements, but admittedly there’s very little on the subject in the news. Where it will hit MX is in the agricultural trade. The US consumer can absorb a cost increase using US growers more than MX can absorb their agriculture industry losing trade.

CA is different and I suspect it’s going to cause higher fuel prices. But 2 things will mitigate that. 1 is that CA exports crude oil and the US refines it. So the increases will hurt CA (and MX) on the back end as refined oil prices raise. The other thing that isn’t being talked about is the US crude oil. I also suspect that this will kickstart US crude oil industry again along with the fracking industry.

Some of this is opinion on my part and speculation as there isn’t enough reporting and information available so don’t take it all as fact.

In response to a previous ignoramus:

When Hitler admiringly stated in 1928 that the white settlers had "gunned down the millions of Redskins to a few hundred thousand, and now keep the modest remnant under observation in a cage"

The cage he was referring to are the reservations the survivors of the genocide were forced into during the ethnic cleansing. They still live in those cages.

Here is an image of the state sponsored ethnic cleansing of these "savages" as that slave owning tyrant jefferson labelled them in the white settler 'declaration'.

@Grammarnut

when Britain did not steal land from Native Americans; the US did that, which is why there was a rebellion in the 13 colonies in the 1770s - the colonists wanted to move into Native American lands and Britain would not let them).

Huh? I think someone needs to refresh a bit on their world history 🤣

Much of the non-European world was colonized under the guise of the Doctrine of Discovery - a unilateral decree of international law issued by Pope Alexander VI in 1493 that categorized Indigenous Peoples as subhuman because they were not Christian and treated their land as unoccupied and available for the taking. In the early colonial period, there were sometimes treaties entered into or token payments made for use or purchase of Native People’s land. But predominantly, outright theft, enforced by violence, was the method of colonial land control. In 1663, by a decree from King Charles II, the colonial British Empire seized all the land of Native Peoples between 31 and 36 degrees latitude (an area extending from the today’s southern Georgia border to North Carolina’s northern border), from the east to the west coasts. Eighty years later, King George II of England awarded the Earl of Granville the upper half of what is now North Carolina. This area, which contained what is now Durham County, included 26,000 square miles stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to an indefinite western boundary. In the Carolina colony, Granville’s agents carved up stolen Native People’s land into parcels which were sold to English settlers. Ownership of these parcels was bestowed through land grants.

Message from the Premier of Ontario !!

Starting today and until U.S. tariffs are removed, Ontario is banning American companies from provincial contracts.

Every year, the Ontario government and its agencies spend $30 billion on procurement, alongside our $200 billion plan to build Ontario. U.S.-based businesses will now lose out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenues. They only have President Trump to blame.

We’re going one step further. We’ll be ripping up the province’s contract with Starlink. Ontario won’t do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy.

Canada didn't start this fight with the U.S., but you better believe we're ready to win it.

That’s a bold move. I wonder what the termination terms on those contracts are. It will be interesting to see what happens.

He never threatened to invade Greenland or Panama. He's hoping to convince Greenland to make a deal to become a territory.

And Panama already blinked, and will be ending their "Belt and Road' initiative with China, which is what Trump really wanted. Panama didn't have a leg to stand on. When we gave them the canal they promised to run it in perpetuity. They abrogated the treaty by allowing China to run it. Since Panama had abrogated the treaty, the US was well within international law to declare the treaty null and void and take back the canal by force. It only took one visit by our new Secretary of State to convince them of the error of their ways.

Wow, your wording is outrageous, "when we gave them the canal", do you mean when you returned something that wasn't yours to begin with!

What century are you living in? My dh is native American (Sac and Fox) and has never lived in a "cage." He grew up in a 5 bedroom house in a nice suburb and has enjoyed all of the benefits of being an American, got a good education, a great job and together we raised two beautiful children "of color." Our son is a software engineer for a company whose name you would recognize and our daughter is a medical doctor. We are now comfortably retired. He has always enjoyed the same rights, freedoms, and responsibilities as every other American, and every other native American we know has a similar story.

BTW, according to the official exit poll, 65% of native Americans voted for Trump.

That exit poll was based on 229 self-identified native Americans who didn't live on reservations. Hardly credible as a piece of reserach, was it?

1 in 3 native Americans live in poverty according to 2024 figures, so it would seem that quite a lot of them don't have 5 bedroom nice suburban houses.

You perhaps need to expand your friendship group if you don't know any native Americans who haven't grown up in similar style. Oklahoma (assuming he is Sac and Fox then likely grew up in that state - 2/3rds of the registered tribal population is from there) is an anomoly in the statistics and the only state in which there was a recorded majority for Republicans amongst native Americans in the election. Of course the statistics available in all sorts of areas of study are complicated by the fact that native Americans are still outliers when it comes to recording demographic information - they literally often do not count, whereas even Black and Hispanic groups are recorded seperately but native Americans aren't.
