Would you go ahead with birthday party today ? DD vomited

It's my DD 5th bday party today.

Huge party- 30 kids. It's at a venue with entertainers etc.

Last night she threw up at around 6pm and then again at 10pm. No fever and has been sleeping soundly since.

Would you cancel the party ?

I'm thinking to see how the morning goes, as the party isn't until 2 and then, go from there.

@imisscashmere - it's entirely possible to throw up once because of a stomach bug. In fact, you can have Noro and have mild symptoms, be contagious and not be sick at all.

Yes, I've had noro a couple of times and the first time I was only sick twice. It's the worst I've ever felt with a bug. It had gone round the family but the kids in the family bounced back really quickly and it floored all the adults.

TheThreeMiracles · 01/02/2025 07:54

I think you're very selfish. Very inconsiderate why ask if you're going to go ahead anyway ! I do hope it's a hall rather than a soft play where other members of the public will be ! Enjoy your party tho cuz clearly you're not fussed about anyone else at this stage!

Sherararara · 01/02/2025 07:54

No I wouldn’t cancel you monitor this morning and see how she feels. All these over the top reactions. Classic MN. Could easily have been the excitement plus big lunch that made her vomit.

olympicsrock · 01/02/2025 07:54

She may well just be excited . I used to be sick with excitement as a child. If she seems fine this morning i would actually go ahead with the party. You’ll know if she’s not right this morning .

Iloveeastereggs2020 · 01/02/2025 07:53

I would cancel. You also have the risk your DD tells people at her party she’s been poorly, which would lead to potential disagreements. Well I know I would leave straight away and ignore the family moving forwards.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 01/02/2025 07:53

I would still let my DC attend a party of a child who had been sick the previous day. I don't think the risk of catching anything would be particularly high.

My kids were never particularly sickly though so I'm not especially anxious about bugs.

pictoosh · 01/02/2025 07:53

This thread is quite entertaining for my morning coffee.

Agree that mumsnetters can appear overly anxious and cautious a lot of the time. I think that's because it's easy to be opinionated and sanctimonious about someone else's actions or parenting online. I don't think it reflects their own reality much of the time, it's just haughtily imposed on other people for a personal boost.

However, I'm with the crowd on this one. You are taking a massive risk with the party. The vomiting is fuck all to do with her lunch and you know it. You're crossing your fingers and jumping...and that is up to you.

I hope no one else gets ill. If they do, they've got you to thank.

JessiesJ99 · 01/02/2025 07:53

I would wait a while. See how she is when she wakes up. It might not be a bug, maybe just something she ate yesterday, which is now out of her system.

Be a shame to cancel the party, and then by 2 pm, she's perfectly fine.

Maybe make the call at 11am. That way it gives the parents 3 hours notice if you do cancel.

This can't be real!we've all seen motherland it's a definite cancelling situation, ive cancelled a birthday party on the day it's much better than the alternative.

crumblingschools · 01/02/2025 07:50

Have you let the entertainer know? Any other adults who are going to be there?

Fargo79 · 01/02/2025 07:50

cameheredor · 01/02/2025 07:29

But what can you do if you need to take drugs that surprise your immune system AND have young kids ? Seriously ? What do you expect me to do ?

Not go to school plays, not hold birthday parties, go crazy every time they're sick ?

You just have to get on with it and hope for the best. I'm sick a lot, I vomit a lot too. But I can't stop sending my kids to school / nursery.

What are you talking about 🤣 You're very dramatic aren't you?

Not go to school plays, not hold birthday parties, go crazy every time they're sick?

No, you don't take sick children to school plays or birthday parties. This is common sense and basic courtesy. It's a very easy, very obvious way to avoid spreading illness unnecessarily to lots of other people. You don't need to "go crazy". You just very calmly don't take a sick child out socialising. Easy peasy. No drama required. Most of us manage it fine. Not sure why it's such a source of drama and anxiety for you.

She was sick twice, 4 hours apart, hours after eating her lunch. Please don’t infect her whole class with a sickness bug.

But seeing as you’re so set in your ways, at least tell everyone who’s invited the truth so they can skip the party. And by truth I mean ‘DD was sick twice in the night’ not ‘DD had a large lunch and was sick afterwards’

Even the smallest bug would hospitalise my daughter and wipe her out for 1-2weeks.

I have family member immunosuppressed due to cancer treatment. Something like this which is completely unavoidable would wipe them out too.

Cancel the party OP it's just not worth risking people's health you don't know everyone's situation

Fam23 · 01/02/2025 07:48

cameheredor · 01/02/2025 06:10

It might not be a stomach bug !!

It 100% is a stomach bug.
I would be so pissed off if I turned up to a birthday party with my children to be infected by a stomach bug.

imagine if you were turning up unknowingly to a party where the child would infect all the other children with a stomach bug. Would you be happy?

The chance of it being something else is slim when norovirus and other stomach viruses are rife at the moment. And she was sick twice. Don’t be a twat.

Everyone: Yes

OP: You're all wrong.

So what ! We are having a debate ! What's the big deal ? I had my opinion to start, I suspected the outcome and wondered if there were any people I deem reasonable - there are actually a few.

My opinion hasn't changed.

It's clear that you just wanted people to agree with you that it's fine. Maybe you feel a twinge of guilt and wanted to be made to feel better about the choice you've already made. Well, you picked the wrong forum for that, I'm afraid.

Also, even if every kid there got horribly sick, there's no way you'd come back and say that. Come on! You're going to come back and say everything was fine, nobody got ill, everyone was all wrong and horrible, etc, no matter what happens. 🤣

Heronwatcher · 01/02/2025 07:46

I’d cancel. Norovirus is rife at the moment.

But if you do decide to go ahead you must tell people, and tell them the whole story.

rainbowsky22 · 01/02/2025 07:45

Why have you asked a question to go against everyone who replies ? Your mind is clearly made up that you are not cancelling so I don't know why you've asked in the first place. For what it's worth, I would be livid if my child attended your daughters party who was sick last night.

Oh dear. She had a big lunch that sat in her stomach ( from a restaurant ) cupcake after.

I think that's the cause, not a bug.

Why are you asking for advice when you are clearly going to do what you want anyway

TheyAreNotAngelsTheyDontCareAtAll · 01/02/2025 07:43

Probably just excited.
In the absence of other signs and symptoms, it's unlikely to be a bug

Misty999 · 01/02/2025 07:43

I'd go ahead with party OP people are bonkers about sickness bugs and colds on Mumsnet. If they are all in school together then they'll get it anyway.

CautiousLurker01 · 01/02/2025 07:42

I’d personally watch and wait to see how she is by mid morning?

My kids vomit due to lactose intolerance, over-excitement and migraine, so if I kept them off every time they vomited they’d have missed school for no reason a million times. I had to contact the school and explain that ‘vomiting’ was a regular, non viral occurrence in our home and that they would be coming in regardless and train my kids NOT to mention being sick.

Obviously, if you see any signs of it being illness related (temperature, diarrhoea) by midmorning, I’d then cancel.
