Would you go ahead with birthday party today ? DD vomited

It's my DD 5th bday party today.

Huge party- 30 kids. It's at a venue with entertainers etc.

Last night she threw up at around 6pm and then again at 10pm. No fever and has been sleeping soundly since.

Would you cancel the party ?

I'm thinking to see how the morning goes, as the party isn't until 2 and then, go from there.

It might not be a stomach bug !!

Op why ask if you already know what you're doing... you don't want to cancel the party you're hoping she will get up and be better. You won't cancel the party if she is and ppl here are just going to have a go at you but most probably do the same thing as you if it was them so just leave it at that.

Zanatdy · 01/02/2025 08:06

I’d see how she is this morning. It’s easy to say in a hypothetical situation that you’d cancel (just like everyone on here would leave a relationship at the first sign of trouble) but when you’ve paid out a lot of money and have a very excited birthday girl it’s a lot harder. Of course no-one here will appreciate that, as they all live in a perfect world.

Was she not at school yesterday?

cameheredor · 01/02/2025 08:06

think as long as you are happy for people to know that your daughter was sick last night, it's fine to go ahead. If you were keeping it secret that would indicate you didn't really think it was ok.

In reality kids that go to your kid's school have probably been exposed to this bug already.

The 48 hour rule for schools is more about preventing the kids vomiting while they're actually in the setting with all the mess etc for staff to deal with, IMO.

My kid's school has a 24 hour rule anyway which surprised me but they're hot on attendance

Yup they know and my DD is jumping up and down and eating and drinking completely fine.

Another child brought chickenpox into school, and I woke up on my birthday with them and had to miss my own soft play party. I think my mum was more upset than me as I got a lot of pity presents. Grin She dispatched my dad and uncle to supervise as it was too late to cancel and other parents ended up offering to pay to recoup some costs (obv this was not expected nor asked for). If you aren’t going to get any money back from cancelling this late then I’d probably still see if someone else can plough on with the party so no one else misses out.

You will feel like a shithead if you cause another child to miss their party next week because your DD spread germs. And god forbid they live with anyone immunocompromised.

TaggieO · 01/02/2025 08:05

I had a friend like you. Her daughter was “only sick once and seemed fine” so she brought her along to my wedding rehearsal. Gave everyone norovirus. We aren’t friends anymore.

So what ! We are having a debate ! What's the big deal ? I had my opinion to start, I suspected the outcome and wondered if there were any people I deem reasonable - there are actually a few.

My opinion hasn't changed.

This thread is so pointless as you already know what you're going to do.

Fwiw, my DC threw up once, a very small amount, in the night once and was totally fine the next day. Two days later I was bedridden for days with something akin to norovirus and DH succumbed a few days after me. So I don't think anyone can predict whether a child is contagious based on how well they seem the day after being sick.

My 5 year old went to a party and during the afternoon he ate a fair bit of cake a couple of bottles of juice. Randomly at 11.30pm he woke up and was sick everywhere. Next morning and after that absolutely fine. I think he had just either eaten too much/was too rich or something just didn’t agree with him. I don’t know yours situation but our definitely wasn’t illness. Although yours was sick twice which isn’t a good sign.

Edited

This. I don’t think posters have read the whole thread or are being obtuse. There are some very aggressive and nasty posts calling the op a twat and an idiot. No need. I wouldn’t be surprised if the thread gets pulled.

Norovirus floors you, it doesn’t just make you vomit twice and there’s no fever.

Have you told everyone coming to the party about the puke? That’s the only way to go ahead without it being a dick move. Let them make an informed choice.

Me too 🤣

Don’t worry, you would have all got a text at 6am and have text back that you have no problem at all with it!!

The host of the party sounds utterly delightful…

Debates involve back and forth. All you're doing is calling anyone who disagrees with you anxious fools. Not a debate.

Maybe you could send party bags to those who you "deem reasonable" as a prize.

Edited

Or invite them for a piece of birthday cake after the birthday girl has blown out the candles and spread her ‘not sickness’ germs all over it 😂

Lorelaigilmore88 · 01/02/2025 08:02

Second everyone on this who has said why did you start a thread on aibu if you are so adamant you are right. Its not a debate.
Also kids talk so your DD will probably tell people she has been sick, so you might very well have some pissed off parents

Yourethebeerthief · 01/02/2025 08:01

The day before my child's 3rd birthday he felt quite hot. I could sense that a virus might be working on him and told my husband that if he was ill he should go and carry on with the party so that at least everyone can have fun, and I would stay at home with my son. We'd have lost the money anyway.

Fortunately he was fine, but we absolutely were prepared to do that. These things happen.

Why bother to start a thread asking AIBU when you have already made your mind up and everyone else is wrong? 😶 Surely night/morning before party for 30 kids you have better things to do!

OlympicWomen · 01/02/2025 07:59

Sherararara · 01/02/2025 07:54

No I wouldn’t cancel you monitor this morning and see how she feels. All these over the top reactions. Classic MN. Could easily have been the excitement plus big lunch that made her vomit.

Edited

It's not "classic MN" - it's parents with knowledge and experience who tend to follow healthcare advice to minimise illness, distress and inconvenience.
I understand that's not necessarily "cool", but it's practical.

shellyleppard · 01/02/2025 07:59

Op let me tell you a little story from a long time ago. My son was at infant school. A bug was slowly doing the rounds. One lovely mum sent her child in because "he was only sick once". My family got ill (2 children, 2 adults). Over the Christmas break. The sickness started on the 23rd and finally finished on the 30th. They had to close the school and deep clean it. That's how infectious these sickness bugs are......do you want to be that mum???

How do you guys go through life and get anything done with so much anxiety ? I don't get it. Relax.

Things are going to be OK.

Strange you have nothing better to do on the morning of your dds party than to post on mumsnet, about a potentially explosive subject, attempting to wind people up by being goady.
