Would you go ahead with birthday party today ? DD vomited

It's my DD 5th bday party today.

Huge party- 30 kids. It's at a venue with entertainers etc.

Last night she threw up at around 6pm and then again at 10pm. No fever and has been sleeping soundly since.

Would you cancel the party ?

I'm thinking to see how the morning goes, as the party isn't until 2 and then, go from there.

@Sometimeswinning do you use that criteria for attending school or visiting elderly relatives in care homes?

God no. But I wouldn’t go to my elderly relatives if my child had a really bad cold. Child would still go to school and parties with a cold. Obviously if they felt well which is what the thread is about.

Fencehedge · 01/02/2025 11:38

Fair enough (but still somewhat selfish) if you are honest with your guests that your child has been sick multiple times - give them the choice to cancel themselves. I wouldn't bring my DD.

When this happened to us just before a long haul flight the GP gave us anti sickness meds! Most people do just crack on in real life.

I guess mumsnetters would think this is extremely selfish, to spread an illness on the plane etc. but I agree, in real life, people do just crack on.

Wow. You actually went on a long haul flight with d & v? You selfish selfish person. You probably ruined so many other people's holidays but I bet you don't care about that do you?

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 01/02/2025 11:36

I see you the op has been reporting lots of us who don't agree with her

The arrogance of you is astounding op. It's all about you and yours isn't it? The 48 hour rule is there for a reason but somehow your family are special and exempt from this. As selfish as it comes!

And as if you are going to be coming back when lots of your dd's classmates and their families come down with it. You probably won't even feel embarrassed

Sometimeswinning · 01/02/2025 11:09

I personally wouldn’t cancel if the child was fine the next day. I most definitely would not come on to mumsnet and ask for an opinion!

Id keep quiet and hope dd didn’t say anything. Pretty slim chance of that though!

TheThreeMiracles · 01/02/2025 07:31

No way but if you do please inform all those attending so they can decide if they want to risk catching it ! Also let the venue hire know ! They will need to do an extra clean I think you'd be selfish to carry on with your plans but I have a phobia of sick !

Me too

HUGE HUGE phobia

Have you told everyone coming to the party about the puke? That’s the only way to go ahead without it being a dick move. Let them make an informed choice.

lol I’m emetophobic so I’d be thrilled … 😭

Tricho · 01/02/2025 10:52

OP: should I cancel the party ?

A deafening unanimous chorus: yes

OP: hm how about I don't cancel it and then rudely abd aggressively tell everyone why they're wrong

Biggest waste of time thread I've seen in a while

Devilgate · 01/02/2025 10:52

No - would NOT go ahead with party

My dd is a random vomiter. You can tell the difference between something not quite settling right and a bug. She will be fine

Yeah it does randomly happen to my DD and actually, me, sometimes. ( entirely separate occasions ). Weeks apart. Especially after eating out. It's just one of those things.

It presents differently when it's a stomach bug - the vomiting goes on for longer, there's also diarrhoea after this amount of time. Sometimes a fever too. She had an actual bug at the beginning of the month and I kept her off school. This thing hasn't presented the same at all.

Anyway, people know and that's that. Party is going ahead because she's fine.

If my pretend daughter was pretend vomiting on the day of her pretend party then yes I’d cancel. Seriously OP there’s a big world out there, step away from the phone and go and live your REAL life 😂

It does feel like a troll post, but MN hid it while they looked into it, then it reappeared so presumably op is a long standing poster....

mummysmagicmedicine · 01/02/2025 08:13

I’d cancel personally but I suppose if you’re adamant it is to go ahead then it would be polite to warn other parents so they can decide if their DC go or not

Yogaatsunrise · 01/02/2025 08:12

All this pearl clutching over a bit of sick! More times than not, my dc have been sick once or twice and have been fine. I wouldn’t cancel a whole party if she is well!

The kids are exposed to germs all day long.

I couldn't care less about your daughter's party, however I'm intrigued in the 10 real life people you have asked between 10pm and 6am? Do you live with all these people, are some of the children? I can't imagine reaching out to 10 people during those unsocial hours about such a trivial subject 😆

Jk987 · 01/02/2025 08:11

I'd go ahead. The mums on mumsnet are risk averse to the absolute extreme.

Readmorebooks40 · 01/02/2025 08:09

My child has thrown up from over eating a few times but never twice 4 hours apart. It's most likely a bug. You should let everyone know at least and then they can decide e.g. Good morning everyone, daughter was sick a couple of times late yesterday evening but she is fine this morning, slept all night, no temperature and has eaten her breakfast. Not sure if it was a bug or something she ate. I totally understand if you don't want to attend but we are going ahead with the party as planned. Let me know if you can or can't make it. Thanks.

I’d see how she is this morning. It’s easy to say in a hypothetical situation that you’d cancel (just like everyone on here would leave a relationship at the first sign of trouble) but when you’ve paid out a lot of money and have a very excited birthday girl it’s a lot harder. Of course no-one here will appreciate that, as they all live in a perfect world.

Exactly.

think as long as you are happy for people to know that your daughter was sick last night, it's fine to go ahead. If you were keeping it secret that would indicate you didn't really think it was ok.

In reality kids that go to your kid's school have probably been exposed to this bug already.

The 48 hour rule for schools is more about preventing the kids vomiting while they're actually in the setting with all the mess etc for staff to deal with, IMO.

My kid's school has a 24 hour rule anyway which surprised me but they're hot on attendance

Yup they know and my DD is jumping up and down and eating and drinking completely fine.

The 48 hour rule is set by Public Health England to prevent the spread of infection.

Ffs how cam you be so delusional
