A man called me stupid in front of my daughter

As I was exiting the lift with my two-year-old in the pram, another pram went out ahead of us. Since I was backing out, I didn’t realize they were still near the elevator entrance, and I accidentally bumped into the woman with the other pram. I was looking at my phone while maneuvering, but I immediately apologized. However, her husband deliberately said, "She’s on her phone, she’s stupid." My little girl heard it and repeated, "Mum, are you stupid." I was absolutely fuming and really wanted to retaliate. I was so angry and told him that I already apologized and I think you're stupid and rude. I know I should have just ignored it but it really made me so angry.

  1. No she was on her phone to the GP
  2. Again she didn’t hit anyone with her buggy. Where are you getting legs from?!
  3. Its not private if its right next to you
  4. Yes OP didn’t take name calling lying down

So what do you think of the man calling someone stupid in front of his child - by YOUR standards he’s a terrible parent wouldn’t you agree?

She only claimed she was waiting for a very important GP call as a drip feed once posters started disagreeing with her en masse. Oldest tactic in the book. I can say that I'm waiting for a very important call from the Prime Minister, it doesn't make it true.

Still don't understand why you keep claiming she didn't hit the woman with her pram. She did.

It wasn't a conversation she was involved in, so yes, it was private. By your logic, the man would have had every right to start chipping in to her very important conversation with her (imaginary) GP, since that wasn't private either, right?

Usual nonsense double standards that the man can't insult OP in a private remark to his wife but it's perfectly acceptable for her to hurl insults directly at him. Only to a man hating loon, of course.

Maybe he is a shit parent. But he isn't the one running to Mumsnet to complain about how offended he is, is he?

BeLilacSloth · 31/01/2025 21:55

Lifts can be really dangerous and you bumped in to a mother and baby as you were on your phone. Mans got a point.

Very differently

Why do hate women? Woman hater!!

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 21:55

Me waiting for posters to realise OP didn’t ram anyone with her pram.

I wonder how this thread would be going if the OP was a man and had bumped into a woman because he was on his phone.

Very differently

Ignore the man?
Move on with her life?
Acknowledge she was in the wrong?

An apology IS acknowledging she’s in the wrong.

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 31/01/2025 21:48

Constantly going on about MRAs is basically MN speak for "you are a man pretending to be a woman and your opinion is invalid"

That's not remotely the same situation and you know it.

No I don’t know to. You’re saying that it’s ok to be rude about someone within earshot as long as you’re addressing someone else. Like I say, go out and try that in real life and see how far it gets you

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 21:50

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 31/01/2025 21:47

A half hearted "Oh sorry" doesn't mean anything

It's pretty clear OPbdoesnt even really think she did anything wrong

Apology was pointless

What do you expect to do when people make minor mistakes then? Turn back time? Burst into tears? Give them money? Smack themselves on the face?

She acknowledged her mistake by apologising.

The man should have moved on.

Instead he escalated the situation by calling Op stupid.

And OP rightly responded.

The irony of posters saying a man is a "bully" and a "big baby" and acting like he deeply insulted a woman because he called her stupid and then making comments about other poster's intelligence because they disagree with you

I’m making comments about poster’s intelligence because they haven’t read the OP properly, and because they come out with illogical arguments like “You can’t call someone stupid to their face but you can call them stupid to someone else standing next to them and it’s none of their business”

Kibble29 · 31/01/2025 21:49

What did you want OP to do? Flagellate herself with her umbrella? 😂

What does “weh you are a man” mean?

Deliberately standing next to someone and randomly bitching about them is also not the same as commenting to the person you're with about an incident that just happened

Ot is when the comment is an insult about the person nearby.

Tell you what, why don’t you go to your local Primark with a friend and insult every person who looks at their phone within earshot - see what happens.

Act stupid, be prepared to be called stupid

Insult someone within earshot, expect to be called out on it

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 21:47

namechangetheworld · 31/01/2025 21:43

Why do you keep insisting OP didn't hit anyone with her pram?

Because she didn’t.

Why are you insisting she die?

Tell you what: read the OP again, slowly, and picture the scene in your head

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 31/01/2025 21:47

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/01/2025 21:46

Well the man acted stupid by being insulting after an apology, so he deserved to be called stupid.

Why do you keep ignoring the question on why you think it’s bad for OP say stupid in front of her child but it’s ok for the man to say stupid in front of his child?

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 31/01/2025 21:44

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/01/2025 21:41

So (to use your example), you’re presumably happy for your colleagues to say ‘ he is a fucking stupid man’ as long as they don’t say ‘you’re a fucking stupid man’?

Because that’s what you’re saying, that OP should be fine with being called stupid.

😂
