A man called me stupid in front of my daughter

As I was exiting the lift with my two-year-old in the pram, another pram went out ahead of us. Since I was backing out, I didn’t realize they were still near the elevator entrance, and I accidentally bumped into the woman with the other pram. I was looking at my phone while maneuvering, but I immediately apologized. However, her husband deliberately said, "She’s on her phone, she’s stupid." My little girl heard it and repeated, "Mum, are you stupid." I was absolutely fuming and really wanted to retaliate. I was so angry and told him that I already apologized and I think you're stupid and rude. I know I should have just ignored it but it really made me so angry.

Nah, OP came to Mumsnet to crow about how she hit a woman with her pram when she was busy gawking at her phone, insulted the bloke who got annoyed with her for it, and then hoped everyone would join in for a big man-hating frenzy. Thankfully the majority of posters on here seem to disagree with her actions, and my faith in human nature has been restored.

You really think someone ‘crowing’ would say ‘. I know I should have just ignored it’?

If the majority of people here have the same poor comprehension as you then I’m happy to be in the minority!

I never claimed the man wasn't a bad parent. I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of the woman judging him for calling her names in front of her child, when she immedietely does the same thing right back. In front of her child. Not exactly quality parenting, is it?

Where did I say I disagree with her writing the post? I said the post clearly hasn't descended into the man hating frenzy OP was hoping for, although you're seemingly absolutely desperate for that to happen. I wonder why?

Edited

You seem to think “He hasn’t come on here to moan about it” is a reason as to why OP is worse than him. So posting on an anonymous forum is worse than insulting someone practically to their face?

Well feel free to educate me on what exactly I'm misunderstanding here.

  1. OP is too busy browsing social media (ahem, sorry, taking her urgent GP phonecall) to look where she's pushing her pram.
  2. OP hits a woman's legs. Prams are bloody heavy and this likely hurts.
  3. Woman's husband refers to the OP as just about the tamest word you can think of, privately, to his wife.
  4. OP overreacts, in front of her kid, calling him the same name back to his face, and then turns to Mumsnet to hope that everyone will crow with her about how well she did standing up to the terrible, abusive man.

Thankfully, given the results, most posters on here aren't brainless dolts.

Just to be clear. I was coming out of the lift backwards and my back touch her wife. I didn't hit her with my pram. I didn't stepped on her toes or legs.

Right so the definition of a bad parent is <checks notes> coming into MN to ask about a situation? Thats what makes him not a shit parent but makes the OP a bad parent?

Also - you’re on here. Why are you on here if you disagree with people starting posts?

With point 2 you are reading the OP wrong. You think the OP ran into a woman with the OPs pram. When in fact she bumped into the other woman who also had a pram (which presumably had the woman's child in it, or she could I guess be pushing around a dog or something in the pram).

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 22:17

nodramaplz · 31/01/2025 22:14

I'd be irritated if someone nudged me with a pram cause they were on a phone!

OP didn’t nudge anyone with a pram

Also he is pulled her first - even kids know you don’t start things and if you do you expect someone else to finish them

I I don’t think the majority is players do agree with you actually. Too many like you haven’t even bothered to read the OP

She didn’t hit a woman with her pram 😂 why won’t you read the OP?

It seems I have to spell it out for you: OP was backing out. Meaning she went into the lift pram facing forward and didn’t turn it around. She was pulling (not pushing) the pram as she walked backwards. Her back bumped into the other woman’s back

Jumblebum · 31/01/2025 22:15

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/01/2025 21:50

She acknowledged her mistake by apologising.

The man should have moved on.

Instead he escalated the situation by calling Op stupid.

And OP rightly responded.

At what point does the escalation stop. The man could have ignored the op's lapse, the op could have ignored the man's lapse.... Someone has to be the one to step out of the conflict. It doesn't make them weak or a pushover.

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/01/2025 22:14

Kibble29 · 31/01/2025 22:14

Exactly this.

Sorry! I missed the quotation marks!

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 22:14

Kibble29 · 31/01/2025 22:13

Did you read the context of the post? That is how this would go if the OP was a man who bumped into a woman.

Followed by 18 pages of people quoting definitions of assault and how you don’t need to be physically injured to be a victim.

TBF you’d also get people fawning over him. I think people just like to stick the boot into OPs sometimes

  1. As I said, if you don’t believe the OP, why even comment on the thread? What a waste of time.
  2. You keep saying rammed when she hasn’t said this at all.
  3. I doubt you would be so nonchalant if someone insulted you in your hearing. So someone could swear at you and as long as they were talking about you, not AT you, you’d be fine with? Sure 😂
  4. See no 3 😂

OP hasn’t come on Mumsnet to complain, she’s asking if she was BU to call him stupid. And I for one think she wasn’t at all!

Assault 😂

So the next time someone bumps into me, should I sue them for GBH?

I don't think you understand the meaning of the word hypocritical. The OP made a big show of pointing out that the man referred to her as stupid (in a private conversation) in front of her daughter, implying he's a terrible person for doing so and she's somehow above such behaviour ... before immediately throwing the insult right back at him. In front of her daughter.

Again, the man might be the worst parent in the world, but he's not on here complaining about the OP's behaviour, is he?

Kibble29 · 31/01/2025 22:04

Yep.

“A “GP call” isn’t an excuse to assault someone”

”What were you thinking? Is this your first time with a pram? Are you always this much of a bad dad?”

”I’d have called the police.”

Assault 😂

So the next time someone bumps into me, should I sue them for GBH?

namechangetheworld · 31/01/2025 22:05

Don’t bother saying sorry it isn’t good enough!

Jesus wept, are you feeling OK?

OP hit a woman with her pram. Show me where it says otherwise.

It’s a joke based on stuff you’ve said.

She. Didn’t. Hit. Her. With. A. Pram.

Read the OP again. Slowly. And point out where she states she hit her with a pram

namechangetheworld · 31/01/2025 22:09

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 22:00

  1. OP didn’t have to give details of why she had her phone in her hand.
  2. She didn’t. What makes you think she did. Do I need to spell it out for you?
  3. Well if the OP was talking about the man to her GP then yes it’s her business. It’s not a private conversation when you’re slagging off someone within earshot
  4. She responded to his initial insult.
Maybe he is a shit parent. What a hypocrite you are. You say about double standards yet You unequivocally criticised OP’s parenting for calling someone stupid but it’s only a ‘maybe’ when it comes to the dad

She only claimed she was waiting for a very important GP call as a drip feed once posters started disagreeing with her en masse. Oldest tactic in the book. I can say that I'm waiting for a very important call from the Prime Minister, it doesn't make it true.

Still don't understand why you keep claiming she didn't hit the woman with her pram. She did.

It wasn't a conversation she was involved in, so yes, it was private. By your logic, the man would have had every right to start chipping in to her very important conversation with her (imaginary) GP, since that wasn't private either, right?

Usual nonsense double standards that the man can't insult OP in a private remark to his wife but it's perfectly acceptable for her to hurl insults directly at him. Only to a man hating loon, of course.

Maybe he is a shit parent. But he isn't the one running to Mumsnet to complain about how offended he is, is he?
