A man called me stupid in front of my daughter

As I was exiting the lift with my two-year-old in the pram, another pram went out ahead of us. Since I was backing out, I didn’t realize they were still near the elevator entrance, and I accidentally bumped into the woman with the other pram. I was looking at my phone while maneuvering, but I immediately apologized. However, her husband deliberately said, "She’s on her phone, she’s stupid." My little girl heard it and repeated, "Mum, are you stupid." I was absolutely fuming and really wanted to retaliate. I was so angry and told him that I already apologized and I think you're stupid and rude. I know I should have just ignored it but it really made me so angry.

What a tosser, bet he wouldn't have said that to a man

Why do people always say that? I've seen men be arsey with other men on a regular basis.

Last time i exited a lift backwards with my pram a man standing in front of it grabbed my bum and then said i had walked into his hand.

A lot of men are predators and bullies. More than I thought/had hoped. Nothing stopping them giving you space/having self awareness except the need to see a woman inconvenienced and get off on it.

Everyone knows you let people off the lift before barging forward into. And if you do bump its not a big deal, no need for insults. Unless you’re a man on a power trip who is trigger ready to call someone stupid over nothing. His poor wife.

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 14:39

Yes people being on their phones can be a pain but I can’t even park the car in my local town without using an app, I mostly use my phone for life admin, it’s not like mums are just on TikTok all day

I'm not sure why people don't understand that someone was calling you and you were checking if it was your GP who you were waiting to hear from. Anyway, he shouldn't have been rude after you had apologised, but it's good that you gave as good as you got.

I'm pretty sure we all understand it?

The OP was stupid to check her phone as she was exiting a lift backwards, no matter who she thought was calling.

I'm not sure why you think people don't understand?

I'm sure the OP's phone has a call back function that she could've used, just as she (hopefully) would have if she was driving.

Put the ringer on and then you won't need to stare at your phone to know if an important call is incoming, you can stick it in your pocket and concentrate on what is happening in the here and now.

Honestly you ran the risk of falling over someone and you're offended they were annoyed. Put the bloody phone away the rest of us have important things to deal with too we just don't expect the rest of the world to have to get out of our way because we're not looking at what we're doing.

This. I don’t know how old or infirm people ever leave the house anymore. What with electric bikes coming out of nowhere at top speed, and people like you looking at their phone while backing out of a lift.

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 14:36

My main issue with men like this is that they never pick on someone their own size. If you were a big burly 6ft 5” bloke who’d bumped into his wife it would’ve been “don’t worry about it mate!”. They’re bullies

PixieLaLar · 31/01/2025 14:35

I wouldn’t say he was being unreasonable. People say things out loud in an immediate reaction to something that in this case was stupid and it probably shocked him.

I would just let it go and learn from it.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 31/01/2025 14:35

The problem is that there are so many people wandering around looking at their phones rather than where they’re going, that when someone might have a legitimate reason for doing so people don’t acknowledge that, because they’re used to being bumped into/barged out of the way because someone walks into them playing candy crush or texting.

Nobody was really in the wrong here. You were answering your phone which you needed to and apologised for bumping into them. On the other hand, they’re likely so used to inconsiderate phone users doing the same that it was a normal response. Because most people who are wandering down the street not looking where they’re going because they’re looking at their phones are stupid. It’s just unfortunate that you were branded a month the majority.

TheFatCatsWhiskers1 · 31/01/2025 14:33

Obviously he shouldn't have called you stupid, but when you've been bumped into or forced off the pavement time after time because someone is looking at their phone, it does start to grate. The most annoying one is where somebody suddenly stops directly in front of you, bonus points if it's at the top of an escalator. On a bad day I have on occasion muttered FFS at slightly louder than under breath level. That said, it wasn't him you bumped into so it wasn't something he said on reflex, and for that reason I think he is BU.

I wouldn't give it any further headspace.

friendlycat · 31/01/2025 14:30

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/01/2025 14:25

Why is it wrong of him to call you stupid in front of your child but ok for you to call him stupid in front of your child?

Quite.

towelsandsheets · 31/01/2025 14:30

It wasn't accidental it was careless

friendlycat · 31/01/2025 14:29

You didn't need to escalate it. You should have been concentrating on what you were doing not looking at your phone.

There are just too many people looking at their phones and not looking where they are going, what they are doing etc etc. It is actually stupid.

Carryingcarrying · 31/01/2025 14:28

I love that you said something back! Well done, people need more of that! You accidentally bumped into her, not the end of the world. Any normal human would have said it’s ok when you bumped into them. Imagine what he’s like to live with 😳

GinAndJuice99 · 31/01/2025 14:28

He sounds like a complete dickhead. Try not to waste any of your precious energy thinking about him any longer.

Who cares? She's two, she won't remember. It's just some stranger you won't meet again. If he thinks you are stupid, does it matter? No. Forget about it. If the worse you ever get called is stupid, you are winning. You should hear some of the stuff I've been called by the general public during my career, just for existing. I find it quite funny.

Totally agree with this . Although I wish i could be upset at someone calling me stupid ir would mean my problems are so small

Springsunshine28 · 31/01/2025 14:17

Yes so If you can imagine, I got my 2 hands on the pram while holding my phone as I was waiting for my gp to call back, then It rang as I was coming out so I was looking at it. It was on vibrate. But regardless, I know I was on the wrong here but I so I apologized. But after apologizing he said that I was stupid.

RudbekiasAreSun · 31/01/2025 14:25

well, anyway , move on and don't use the word < stupid > at home. It is one of the words kids once learn, cannot stop using.

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/01/2025 14:23

You were both in the wrong.

Brefugee · 31/01/2025 14:22

Meh. They shouldn't have stopped close to the lift and you should have been concentrating not faffing on your phone. Too late now but "only arses come to a dead stop after exiting the lift" was the answer to that

IPM · 31/01/2025 14:19

Carpetmoths · 31/01/2025 14:18

It doesn’t sound like you were in the wrong at all- it’s not like you were texting, totally oblivious. Ignore all the silly buggers telling you it’s totally ok for a man to call you stupid!

Of course the OP was in the wrong for goodness sake.

Even SHE says she was!

Carpetmoths · 31/01/2025 14:18

I wouldn't have got into it. You don't ever know what sort of crazy you are dealing with.

I would have said. The man is feeling angry because mummy bumped into him. Mummy is not stupid everyone makes mistakes. It's not nice to call people names.
