A man called me stupid in front of my daughter

As I was exiting the lift with my two-year-old in the pram, another pram went out ahead of us. Since I was backing out, I didn’t realize they were still near the elevator entrance, and I accidentally bumped into the woman with the other pram. I was looking at my phone while maneuvering, but I immediately apologized. However, her husband deliberately said, "She’s on her phone, she’s stupid." My little girl heard it and repeated, "Mum, are you stupid." I was absolutely fuming and really wanted to retaliate. I was so angry and told him that I already apologized and I think you're stupid and rude. I know I should have just ignored it but it really made me so angry.

Sometimes I can't believe the responses on here! Can't believe all the people bending over backwards to defend the horrible person who called you stupid. Obviously it's not ok to randomly insult someone who knocks into you and then apologises. What is the world coming to when people are defending this sort of behaviour? Horrible. Don't worry OP, your daughter won't think the worse of you. when mine was a similar age she asked "mum are you a liar?" I was quite upset as to where she might have got this from until we worked out that she was asking if I am a lawyer (I am!)

Keep phone in pocket.
Push pram with two hands.
If phone rings, wait until it's safe to do so and call back.
The joys of mobile phones is the number stores on the call log or they leave a voice mail. There's zero reason to be holding the phone in one hand whilst pushing the pram with your other 2 hands.

Thankfully its not illegal, as poses little danger, didn't know there were pram police around

Teateaandmoretea · 31/01/2025 16:21

Good on you OP.

He wouldn’t have spoken to a bloke like that and after you gave him a mouthful hopefully he’ll think twice about being a sexist twat next time.

polkalfie · 31/01/2025 16:04

Guess what, people do daft things. Some people get distracted by their phones and inconvenience other people, others get irritated and speak without thinking. Really not worthy of over thinking and posting a thread about it.

Perfect28 · 31/01/2025 16:02

You think it's unacceptable he called you stupid so you called him stupid back?

Well that's great modelling.

I admit I was wrong. But he intentionally wanted me to hear it which is a bot of overkill .

So was it also overkill when you told him he was stupid and rude and wanted him to hear it?

@Springsunshine28

I was on your side, until I saw you say you were looking at your phone whilst manoeuvring the pushchair, so I agree with what this man said...

Also, in your first post you said you were 'looking at your phone,' and then suddenly decided (when the thread wasn't going your way) that you were answering a call from the doctor that you were expecting.

Then when you were challenged on THAT (someone asked were you looking at your phone, or actually answering a call,) you changed it to 'I was holding my phone and then it rang and it was the GP.' Wink

My money is on it being the first thing you said. (That you were manoeuvring the pushchair around and just looking at your phone...) You have just changed the narrative because so many people are saying YABU.

Why are some people seemingly incapable of going more than 5 minutes without looking at their bloody phone?! Hmm

.

tropicalroses · 31/01/2025 15:54

You cant go through life being a dick but thinking that because you drop the word 'sorry' straight away that its ok. Walking backwards, with a pram, and on the phone of course you are going to have an accident.

InSearchOfMartin · 31/01/2025 15:54

Newfoundzestforlife · 31/01/2025 15:51

People who don't watch what they're doing (especially when doing something important like maneuvering a pram...) get my back up so I'd be inclined to agree with him.

Would you say it to someone though even after they've apologised?

Londonrach1 · 31/01/2025 15:53

Yabu. You were being silly on your phone whilst exiting a tight spot.

HansGrubersSuit · 31/01/2025 15:50

I'm fairly confident that the MN consensus of opinion is that people who bump into others because they're too busy phone-gazing to look where they're going are indeed stupid.

Some say it, most think it.

All the replies saying ‘yeah well you were being stupid to be fair actually, so you deserved it, smirk smirk’ are completely missing the point. People make mistakes and do ill-judged things in public. That doesn’t give others the right to insult them outright, out loud and especially in front of their children.
This man could have chosen lots of ways to tell you that he wasn’t happy - most people even if they’re really annoyed will respond to a ‘sorry’ with ‘that’s ok’ but sound a bit annoyed, and that’s enough for most people to think about what they’ve done. He could have added ‘but please look where you’re going next time’ but that’s as far as any decent person needs to go. Calling you stupid in front of your daughter showed a total lack of social skills and an aggressive nature which, as pp have said, he wouldn’t have used towards a big burly man. Nor would he have used it towards you, I bet, if you’d been on the arm of a big burly man.
And the posters smirking at you wouldn’t do it if they weren’t behind a screen.

Why are the OP's actions a mistake or "ill judged" but the man's aren't?

This whole incident should be filed under "shit happens" but OP is here hoping we'll all tell her he was more in the wrong than she was.

InSearchOfMartin · 31/01/2025 15:31

Aren't there just?! 🙄

Glad you agree.

rwalker · 31/01/2025 15:39

You weren’t looking where your going on the phone and bumped into a pram

people are fiercely protective over there pram with there babies in

no one died suck it up and move on

Iloveyoubut · 31/01/2025 15:39

He should never have called you stupid. That’s horrible. And he’s a shitty little coward for being so passive aggressive so just be glad he isn’t the father of your children. We all get frazzled and I think people jump to conclusions as to why people are on their phone etc and think that they’re playing bloody candy crush or something. I remeber being on my phone once being told my mother had had a heart attack and I was bawled it for not watching where I was going. I guess we all need to try and give each other a litre more grace sometimes but we don’t. X

pretty mad you’re on your phone in charge of a pram and a year old

what a stupid comment.

Doloresparton · 31/01/2025 15:37

@Springsunshine28 ignore op.
We’ve all been distracted and bumping slowly into someone isn’t a big deal.
He wouldn’t have called a man stupid.
Pity his dp being with a passive aggressive twat.

LadyKenya · 31/01/2025 15:37

Ireallycouldntpossibly · 31/01/2025 14:38

This. I don’t know how old or infirm people ever leave the house anymore. What with electric bikes coming out of nowhere at top speed, and people like you looking at their phone while backing out of a lift.

.

IJustWantToEatChocolateAllDay · 31/01/2025 15:36

So a couple exit a lift with their pram and then stay so close to the lift so that another person accidentally knocks into them, and then they call you stupid? and most of these comments seem to blame you for it??? wow the audacity. I think they were stupid for not getting the hell out of the way.

Jumblebum · 31/01/2025 15:35

Honestly if this had happened to me I would have said to my daughter,

"Well I'm not stupid but I did do a kind of stupid thing. I shouldn't have been looking at my phone and pushing the pram because it was dangerous and I could've hurt someone. That man wasn't kind when he shouted at me and that's not ok either." Then I'd have just got on with my day. We are always modelling behaviour in front of our kids. You had a chance here to show that 1. Looking at a phone whilst walking about is potentially dangerous. 2. That people can say unkind things sometimes but you don't need to react negatively to it. 3. That mums aren't perfect and when we make mistakes it's ok to own up to and learn from it then move on.

Nottodayseitan · 31/01/2025 15:35

Namechangey23 · 31/01/2025 15:34

It's not right to call someone out for their selfishly entitled and inconsiderate behaviour but it is right ram someone else with a pram because you have to take an important phone call and you don't give a shit about them? OK...

Think you got what you deserved OP. If you'd done it to me I'd have shouted OUCH loudly to embarrass you. I see this kind of attitude in London a lot, poor manners. Out of my way, me first, I'm more important, me me me me me. He just countered your bad manners with his own bad manners, I think it is amusing you are shocked someone shamed you for your rubbish behaviour. Saying sorry does not excuse you for deliberately ramming a pram into someone because you are more interested in your phone.

Nottodayseitan · 31/01/2025 15:34

Was a bit stupid tho wasn’t it
