To be really glad I don't live in America right now

I really feel for ordinary Americans. It's bad enough on this side of the Channel, hearing daily about Trump's latest petty, spiteful, idiotic bullshit - that rant against the Bishop who asked him to have mercy on immigrants, the ridiculous and insulting attempt to blame 'diversity' for the plane crash - but living under it must be so much worse. And heaven help you if you're LGBT or a woman. Or an immigrant. Or not white. Or poor. Or anyone else Trump and his freakshow of a government despises. I moan about the UK all the time, like everyone else who lives here, because god knows it's far from perfect, but at least we don't have a government in charge who is trying to strip huge swathes of the population of their rights and citizenship.

You do realise that Trump has just given women their rights back by defining women in law as a biological reality. He's saved women's sports by banning men including those who id as transwomen, same with prisons where 15% of women prisoners are male and he's banned state funded child medical transition including irreversible surgery. Please can you tell me how he's removed our bodily autonomy?

When he said "grab them by the pussy"

Plus being a sex offender would suggest he doesn't respect a woman's bodily autonomy surely?

Yanbu OP. He's batshit and has made America the laughing stock of the entire world.

Last time, not this time. He won the popular vote.

i find it appalling but, honestly, as an American, I was more afraid of a constitutional crisis.

He won the popular vote in the sense of getting more votes than his opponent, but he still won under half of the popuar vote (admittedely, only just under). Just over 48% of voters voted for Harris, and there was an independent candidate. So, yes, he was legitimately elected; but there are an awful lot of people who are devastated by the resukt, even in America.

One danger to the entire world is his health policy, and his appointment of anti-vaxxer RFK Jr as Health Secretary. Viruses know no borders.

100% agree with you @AnonymousBleep

I wouldn't live in America if you paid me! Shock So many reasons to not live there. Unless you're rich/wealthy/very solvent, how can anyone bear to live there? Only way to survive would be to be part of one of the huge religious organisations. 😬

No thank you, I will stay in my lovely country ta muchly (UK!) People can slate and bash and berate it as much as they like, but I will never live anywhere else!

Funnily enough, you do see some UK bashing on here, (from people who live in the UK,) but these people never leave do they? Funny that! Wink

I wouldn't live in the US under ANY administration as none of them will take on the Gun Lobby

100% agree. I think it's deeply depressing how the hard right have managed to weaponise identity politics and get women voting for them against their own interests.

How is not wanting men in women's spaces arguing against our own interests?

Serenandnova · 31/01/2025 13:16

You do get that it's a democracy and "ordinary Americans" voted him in

Nanny0gg · 31/01/2025 13:15

AnonymousBleep · 31/01/2025 10:10

I expected the Reform/Trump lot to be all over this. They seem to have a lot of time to go onto forums and argue that Trump is great and everyone is going to vote Reform in the UK. Weirdly, when you look into it (not so much on here, where you can't but on FB and other forums) lots of them seem to be men from Eastern Europe, and not from the UK at all.

See, THIS is the problem

'I'm right. Everyone else is wrong'

Everyone is likely to be right about something and wrong about something

And people need to listen to other's views. Sometimes they might be right

Nanny0gg · 31/01/2025 13:13

AnonymousBleep · 31/01/2025 10:08

They won't. Their voters are all older people, and there's simply not the numbers to make that happen.

Seem to be a fair few of them on MN though.

Well this Older Person agrees with ONE THING he's said, and that sex is binary and you can't change it.

Otherwise, he's an ignorant, certifiable, incomprehensible lunatic

LouisvilleSlugger · 31/01/2025 13:09

We spend a lot of time in the US. My husband’s there right now. I think it’s fair to say that a huge swathe of the population is thrilled to bits with having Trump as president again. And every obnoxious statement he makes, or thing he does is met with support.

Our friends and family over there are (disappointed) democrats, but even they would not think they’re worthy of pity. They think we’re in a shit show of our own in the UK, tbh.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 31/01/2025 13:03

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 31/01/2025 11:18

I agree with this but would add minority and woman. There is a reason Hilary Clinton didn’t win either. Obama was fine as he was ‘our kind of black’. Please understand I don’t think like this but rather trying to weapon the thinking.

Also, what people don’t know who don’t live in the US is that Fox News is seriously brainwashing. They have beautiful women all dolled up delivered op eds (never straight news) about all the wonderful things Trump has said or down. They never show what he has done wrong or said wrong. I can almost guarantee that his abhorrent comments al(without any evidence) on air traffic controllers will not be aired. Or will be so edited to show how he was right to say those things and then give a huge amount of info on how the democrats are to blame and how this is there fault.

If you believe the news and don’t watch anything else, honestly you would honestly think Trump
was a genius.

Hillary Clinton lost because half the country couldn't stomach the thought of another Clinton administration. Also Benghazi, missing emails, publicly calling Trump supporters (and US voters) "deplorables". And sheer arrogance and complacency. Not because she was a woman.

I agree with you re Fox but CNN is almost as biased.

Appalonia · 31/01/2025 13:02

Personally I feel quite envious of them. To see a politician actually do what he said he would do, and so quickly, is astonishing. Here we have Keir Starmer who has no integrity or vision, has already reneged on his promises and seems intent on making everything in this country worse. I genuinely despair for the future of this country.

It was the House

If you're going to laugh at people for having reasonable opinions that don't align with yours and 'educate' people on biology at least get the words right.

It's sperm, not sperms. Only one sperm fertilises an egg.

The embryo implants, not implements.

Have no idea where the 14 days gestation comes from. Day 5 embryos and day 6 blastocysts are transferred into the uterus in IVF where sex testing is done embryos. Nothing lives in a dish for 14 days.

Please note I said before 14 days.
I don't know why my auto correct added a s to sperm (did it in this post too but I caught it this time) and oops with my dyslexia meaning that 8 again didn't see the auto correct changing implants into implements.
Also it's not an opinion that sex is encoded at conception it's fact. I was laughing at the poster because they tried pulling me up with misinformation sex is not determined at 6 weeks as the poster I quoted claims.
Perhaps you should shine your fact-checking light on them rather than picking on my typos or is it only posters who you disagree with that you do this with

WilfredsPies · 31/01/2025 11:48

I think you’re being incredibly shortsighted. If someone had told you in 2011 that in five years time, we’d have a referendum and vote to leave the EU, would you have believed them? Or would you have laughed and told them not to be silly because there simply wouldn’t be the numbers of people to vote for it as it would only be older voters who would want such a thing? And yet, here we are.

Come to that, if someone had told you that Donald Trump of all people would one day win two Presidential elections, would you have believed them? Donald Trump? Famous for his ridiculous hair, his hotel and his wives. Because I would have said that there was as much chance as one of the Backstreet Boys winning it. And yet, here he is. Again.

If you think that there is definitely no chance of Reform getting in here, then you’re being very naive. I don’t know the average age of their supporters but if they are older, then they’re the ones who tend to get themselves to the ballot box. It’s all very well you crying out ‘Reform Supporter Alert’ as an indication that you consider some opinions as beneath you to even engage with, but you’re actually just doing the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and singing ‘la la la, I can’t hear you’.

Ignoring Farage and his mates is not going to make them go away. If you don’t engage with them and debate them and challenge their policies, all you’re doing is enabling them to slip past the ballot boxes and into No 10 without being shown for who they are. You’re engaging in toddler politics and it’s this sort of thing that is going to get them into power.

And just to head you off at the pass, I’m politically homeless.

I said for years before the Brexit referendum that if there was one, we'd be out of the EU. I also predicted Boris Johnson becoming PM long before it happened.

None of that changes my view that Britain is essentially a centrist country and there just isn't support for any kind of extremism in politics, left or right. As for Farage - no it's not worth engaging with him. And as he's never in the country and does no constituency work whatsoever, I can't see the people of Clacton voting him in again. I know people in that constituency. They're not impressed. Reform has no real policies or plan beyond a lot of shouting. And one of their MPs shouldn't have been elected at all, given he's got a conviction for battering his girlfriend (and we're supposed to think these people care about grooming gangs, LOL).

Found him more normal... Meaning that voters found him more white and more male presumably.

That country would elect a cow turd before it elected a woman, especially a Black woman. And that's exactly what happened.

Exactly this. White male rapist wins over black female lawyer. Trump really doesn't need to bother getting rid of DE&I practices - unconscious bias is deeply entrenched anyway.

Sex is determined by the sperms that fertiliser the egg. If it's an X sperms the embryo will be female. If it's a Y sperms it will be a male embryo.
Genetic testing can be done and is done before an embryo is implemented (so before 14 days gestation), which can tell the sex along with any genetic conditions.

If you're going to laugh at people for having reasonable opinions that don't align with yours and 'educate' people on biology at least get the words right.

A lot of Americans are actually very happy about him. His response to the wildfires, and he visited the storm victims in NC in his first few days in office which they were very grateful for,

I don't see the problem with him to be honest, and neither do the American people or they wouldn't have voted for him!
