To be really glad I don't live in America right now

AnonymousBleep · 31/01/2025 09:57

I really feel for ordinary Americans. It's bad enough on this side of the Channel, hearing daily about Trump's latest petty, spiteful, idiotic bullshit - that rant against the Bishop who asked him to have mercy on immigrants, the ridiculous and insulting attempt to blame 'diversity' for the plane crash - but living under it must be so much worse. And heaven help you if you're LGBT or a woman. Or an immigrant. Or not white. Or poor. Or anyone else Trump and his freakshow of a government despises. I moan about the UK all the time, like everyone else who lives here, because god knows it's far from perfect, but at least we don't have a government in charge who is trying to strip huge swathes of the population of their rights and citizenship.

So, the fact that I correctly stated that Farage has 2.2 million followers on Twitter, that most people do not use the BBC for news and showed you stats proving that Twitter is more popular than ever and stated the irrefutable fact that people of all different persuasions and politics post their views uncensored by governmets or the media on Twitter - all of that is put aside because you don't like Twitter.

And this is why you cannot have an adult discussion, and why it was a waste of my time to bother trying.

I tried, I really did.

Goodbye. You need the last word, so I give you permission to take it.

This isn't a thread about Twitter though? Sorry you don't think I am capable of having an adult discussion about something completely unrelated to the thread topic. Have a nice day!

We have without doubt got a ton of massive problems and have been in managed decline for years. I think that's a worldwide problem. Maybe I'm just feeling really negative ATM but it's hard to see what can be done to turn things around. I feel like we're in a similar state globally now to how the world was in the 1930s, complete with the rise of would-be despots.

Sadly, me too. Feeling very bad for my children that I can't optimism up much of a way back to the world we thought we were bringing them into.

The Americans I know all feel sorry for us over here in the UK. Many US citizens who have spent their working lives visiting the UK reguarly are appalled at what it has become.
Save your pity OP, we have enough problems of our own.

I can imagine. 14 years of the Tories has decimated the country and then you have Brexit. Change is hopefully around the corner, it can't get worse.

BruFord · 31/01/2025 14:31

I believe that’s always been the case though @username299 . If someone obtained citizenship by falsifying their documentation, for example, or not truthfully answering a question on the application, it can be revoked. It’s not a new rule. You even have to declare unpaid speeding tickets!

Same with visas, that’s why there’s been a fuss about Prince Harry as there’s a section about drug use and some suggest that he didn’t answer it truthfully.

Most Americans don’t realize just how thorough the immigration vetting process is!

If you really want to know, as an American in the UK, I saw an awful lot of decline under austerity and 14 years of Tory rule.

Recommending X as a place for unbiased truth has made me smile though.

Trump didn't just win the majority of states, he also won the majority of votes. Most people who voted, voted for Trump.

49.7% of the 64% of voting-eligible population that turned out.

So, yes, more people, but hardly the overwhelming mandate he claims.

Which is worrying in and of itself

Trump is a sex offender who is putting sex offenders in positions of power

He has complete disregard for women and will actively push for abortions to be outlawed

He is removing protections for women

But hey, he's making transpeople's lives harder so he's here for women

He is not removing protections for women. This is simply untrue. And if you believe this to be true you must provide citations and links.

Anyway, gotta go. No point to this.

"The majority voted for this"
The American election system is different. It doesn't work like ours does. It's not really "the people" who vote in the president.

It's terrifying to see what's happening. And the scarier part is how far he wants to go outside America. Threatening to take Greenland by force for example. It will gave effects far beyond America if he really does attempt some of the things he's said.

Labour are absolutely NOT anywhere near as bad.

Trump didn't just win the majority of states, he also won the majority of votes. Most people who voted, voted for Trump.

While I am against Trumps position on immigration I can see why people support it.
While he does have ideas that make sense some of the time he veers into crazy territory every ducking day.
Annexing Greenland, renaming the Gulf of Mexico, pulling out of the Paris Climate agreement when half of a bloody state burned down is something a five year old drawing a map of the world would come up with.
It's like he's coming up with some crazy statement or idea every day. Today it was the link between diversity hiring and a national tragedy because "common sense" tomorrow it will be appointing someone as a health secretary who believes that vaccines cause autism ( oh my bad he already did that).

And no I don't believe that the average American supports unless they hate poor people and "common sense".

And for his views on abortion:
https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/01/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-enforces-overwhelmingly-popular-demand-to-stop-taxpayer-funding-of-abortion/

Abortions yay unless you're poor than you can bloody pay for them yourself.

Abortions yay unless you're poor than you can bloody pay for them yourself.

Because it's so great for kids to be born to people who can't afford them, and those lawmakers are always very, very helpful to women and children in that position.

But, hey, he hates trans people, so all good!

One person said he saved women's sports in response to an argument that he was harming women's rights.

I think it is disingenous to imply that people are implying he is saviour to women. They just see him as less damaging and dangerous to women than the Democrats were.

There is a thing called Theory of Mind. "Theory of mind is typically defined as the ability to understand the thoughts, beliefs, desires, and emotions of other people. This understanding allows individuals to predict how others will feel, act, and think in a given situation"
www.psychologytoday.com/au/basics/theory-of-mind

Accusing people who disagree with you of being bad actors or bots shows a lack of theory of mind.

Anyone capable of utlilising theory of mind could see that Trump was going to win. I strongly predict that the right will win the in the UK next election and in Australia this coming election. This might change, of course, over time, depending on how badly Labour continue to read the room. I think it's all over in Australia though, their election is coming soon and the country really loathes Albanese.

I base this on listening to the fears and complaints of normal, ordinary, everyday people without demonising them.

A good place to find those ideas is Twitter.

Despite what you may have been told, there are people from every imaginable demographic and political belief on Twitter. It is the one place you can really read people's true opinions, unfiltered by the mainstream media or the government. I lurk there, I never post or like, I just read. And what I read is that the right is on the rise, at the grass roots level, everywhere.

On that, I will bow out of this discussion, and wish you all well, whatever your political views.

expected the Reform/Trump lot to be all over this. They seem to have a lot of time to go onto forums and argue that Trump is great and everyone is going to vote Reform in the UK.
Do you realise how arrogant you sound?
Yes, some people disagree with you, surprise!

A quick correction @username299 . Yes, via Executive Order he’s trying to force a change the Constitution re. birthright citizenship- which he absolutely can’t do.
But, as far as I’ve heard, he’s not trying to strip naturalized citizens or people who currently have citizenship as they were born here, of their citizenship. He wants to end birthright citizenship starting on Feb.19th.

As a naturalized citizen myself, I’m paying close attention to this issue.

Edited

Tucked among the priorities listed in his Day 1 executive orders was a one-line reference to enforcing a section of immigration law under which the government can revoke an immigrant's U.S. citizenship if it was "unlawfully procured."

The directive is listed in the order called "Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats." It's an indication that denaturalization will be part of his crackdown, said Amanda Frost, a University of Virginia law professor and immigration attorney.

He's trying to amend the constitution. Birthright citizenship is in the constitution. He also wants to strip citizenship from immigrants.

Pretty much like in the UK the US is quite split so lots of people there are not at all happy with the current direction and leadership. On average these are more likely to be ones that brits know

Plus the US has huge international influence so what happens there matters even if we don't get a say in it

And you can feel sad for any group of people who you believe have voted against their own real interests- just like you can feel sorry for anyone who does something stupid or doesn't take care of their health

OP do you know anyone who lives in the USA ? Have you visited? It seems a bit arrogant to be so upset at democratic choice of another country. I’ve been on MN for years. Posts like yours generally push me the opposite way.

My best friend is a gay American (and very upset about the new president, although thankfully he currently lives in the UK) and yes I've visited many times.

It's a big deal as it will affect the UK, not just because of the inevitable damage it'll do to any global attempt to roll back climate change - which will leave us with a massive refugee problem at some point in the not-too-distant future - and the fact the tariffs Trump is threatening will negatively impact our economy, but because Trump will doubtless meddle in UK politics and try and get his mate Farage into power (with the help of his other mate Musk). He's hardly going to be a fan of our (democratically elected) Labour government. America is a global superpower. Of course this impacts on us and we're entitled to have an opinion on it.

If people seriously think the UK is that bad, they could always fuck off to America to live.
Even though my dd lives there with her American husband, I know where I would rather be living.
