Anyone else not enjoy the season change to Spring?

I know this is an unusual one but I get seasonal affective disorder for spring not autumn.
In my neck of the woods, there are little signs of spring coming, and it makes me feel very low. Once it's here I get used to it and like it, and I enjoy summer but its the change that upsets me. Anyone else?

Yes I find the season change to Spring the hardest. I can cope in the Summer because I know Autumn is coming but I do find Spring difficult. Most people don't really understand this and think I am being a bit miserable so it's good to hear I am not alone Flowers

I love when you can feel spring approaching. I have found myself more and more in hibernation mode during winters.

Soniastrumpet1984 · 30/01/2025 08:58

I can't get hold of it really. I like the summer when it is here, it's not about hating the heat. No negative associations wither. It's just a sense of disquiet. Maybe about the expansion of light.

Just wondering if your feelings about spring might have associations to something that happened in the past? There is something about the type of light in February/March that takes me straight back to a time when I was very ill. It's been 20 years now but every year I feel upset and out of sorts for those few weeks and it's definitely connected to looking outside and seeing the sky

Catza · 30/01/2025 08:53

I've experienced it when I lived in Northern Europe. "Seasonal vitamin deficiency" is the colloquial name for it there. Granted, we have about 3h of daylight throughout winter so there is probably some truth in that. Personally, I take a week off somewhere sunny at the end of Feb every year and it sorts me right out. Typically, on day two my sleep is completely regulated, by day three my mood and energy levels are up. Have you considered taking vit D throughout winter?

neverthelastone · 30/01/2025 08:46

Oh god I love spring - my favourite season! But Feb/early March is a bit of a weird time, so I get what you mean.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 30/01/2025 08:36

I understand OP. I feel like that about summer. Absolutely loathe it. And sometimes we don't get a 'proper' spring, and suddenly hot days happen, which are awful 😔

It's not quite the same as the usual SAD, which I think is about light levels. But it's definitely a 'thing'. And not well understood.

Where are you living? I see no signs of spring and I'm on the edge of London. Maybe too desperate. I have a hyacinth in my kitchen which just bloomed and smells lovely, but that's about it.

I’m also just outside London, one of the camellias is in bloom, and snow drops and daffodils starting to come through, and I can see buds on the trees.

DappledThings · 30/01/2025 08:33

I don't like it because it reminds me another winter is coming to an end with no snow. Not seen any proper stuff for 4 years now.

gannett · 30/01/2025 08:32

I find spring frustrating because I'm impatient. It keeps tantalising me with the promise of better weather but when you go outside it's still basically cold, and so unsettled that you're liable to be rained on at any random point. Weather doesn't actually get pleasurable until the summer.

I think of this when I roll the bottoms of my jeans up, and walk out onto the grass when the summer kicks in.

Then I get bites, and roll them back down and put socks back on.

This feels like a true Profrock moment. Kudos on living the poetic dream!

NotISaidTheCat · 30/01/2025 08:30

To answer the question, I really like winter - we're up north and the hard, frosty mornings are gorgeous, plus I love the quality of the sunlight in the wintertime (when the sun deigns to make an appearance). So I'm a little sad when winter is over with, but it's nice when the days start getting longer. Could do without all the mud in the springtime, though, and the corresponding muddy paws of my dog!

KimberleyClark · 30/01/2025 08:30

I love spring. What irrationally annoys me is that when as soon as there’s a hint of warmth in the spring sunshine people strip off and start acting like it’s summer!

We measure out our lives in coffee spoons? 😁

Also if you enjoy certain aspects of the season it can be a focus on the fact it’ll be a whole year until you enjoy them again - rather than looking forward to what the next season allows you to do. I myself need to focus more on this positive aspect - it’s very likely a mindset and half-full/half-empty syndrome. Also nostalgia, reticence of letting go and fear of the future perhaps 🤷🏼‍♀️

SpringBunnyHopHop · 30/01/2025 08:27

I need the signs of spring coming to keep me going.

That too!

Suhbataar · 30/01/2025 08:26

Do you supplement well with vitamin d? Pretty much everyone at this latitude will be deficient by this point in the winter/early spring and won't be able to make more till April.

Deficiency can make you feel low and anxious and a few years of that could have you associating the low feeling with the signs of spring, maybe.

comoatoupeira · 30/01/2025 08:25

I don't like the expectation for it to be warm and lovely, and it's chilly for months and months

I don't mind spring per se but it does remind me summer is coming with too much heat and light so yes, I get you.

But you know, T.S. Eliot had a point.

Ice where I am this morning but a stunning sunny misty sunrise. Late summer into Autumn is my favourite time.

It is def getting darker later this week.

I kind of know what you mean op. I remember feeling for years a sense of queasiness and dread as the season changed to spring. It was so strange, looking back at it, and I remember telling a friend who said her dad had the same thing! It’s something about the weak evening light and sound of birds. I used to feel it right up until well into my thirties.

Now I don’t really feel it at all, and quite like the sense of spring emerging. But I remember the feeling well.

Editing to add that I don’t feel it AT ALL with any other season; autumn to winter and spring to summer just feel like natural transitions that I barely notice, and I positively embrace summer to autumn, it’s one of my favourite times of year sensing the summer fade and slow down and the smoky autumn start to filter in.

Sceptical123 · 30/01/2025 08:22

Like PP’s have mentioned I think it’s the change some of us don’t like and the visual reminder that the year (TIME) is progressing - this is perhaps the bigger aspect, time slipping away and what that means existentially to us etc. it can feel quite depressing and the fact we have no control over it. We need to try to focus on the things in the year to look forward to each season and take each one as it comes ☺️

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 30/01/2025 08:22

I always find the stretch between now and spring hardest. Christmas is over, and its freezing and normally very grey. That being said I'm very happy with all the blue skies we've had this week, it definitely does lift you a bit but the cold absolutely wrecks me.
