To be upset my promotion wasn't announced

sapphicy · 29/01/2025 20:26

I have been promoted to management at work, I found out it was happening in a meeting with my bosses and then a few days later my email signature changed without warning. It's not a huge change in responsibilities as I was already effectively managing before but without the title, although I've had a pay rise.

When others have been promoted it's been announced in meetings and people have been taken out for drinks after work, etc.

It's been two weeks now and there's been no announcement for me. People have noticed but not a single person has said well done or congratulations at work and I'm sad about it, but also wondering if there's a reason - it's sent me into a negative spiral of thoughts like am I actually shite and they've just given me this title so I'll stay, or does everyone just dislike me!

They also haven't changed my title on the company website yet so I've not felt able to tell anyone other than DP. DP bought me a well done card and I just burst into tears because it's been such a mountain for me and it feels like what should have been a huge achievement has turned into a huge blow to my confidence.

Am I being a bit pathetic? I haven't said anything at work as don't want to sound ungrateful or needy. It is bothering me though.

Congratulations on your promotion! Here I am one year later writing a similar post.

My role has been changed in the website, and I also got new direct reports but the email has not been sent. I am the exception and I feel devalued

Nationsss · 04/02/2025 23:13

Nothing petty about it at all.
Address it with your manager.
It needs correcting.

Emmz1510 · 04/02/2025 23:02

I don’t think it’s needy at all! People should be officially told when someone’s professional role changes, are your work not all that transparent when it comes to communicating information? Also, do you now have line management responsibility for folk? Shouldn’t they be told?
I would just say to whoever has responsibility for this ‘I haven’t been telling people about my new role because I wasn’t sure if it would be announced officially? I feel like it should so we’re all on the same page’.

Classycollab · 03/02/2025 22:22

I would ask your direct line manager.. I’ve had this situation before and it’s due to my manager being shite at thinking this stuff isn’t important! I would just put in a 5min chat and check what the next steps are and if you can update LinkedIn as others have suggested. And if you are on good terms with the team bring some cakes and biscuits in for the next team meeting and say it’s to celebrate your promotion.
one thing I’ve learnt is that you can’t wait around for others to celebrate you, take the opportunity and celebrate yourself!
congratulations on the promotion!
the fact that you’ve been doing this job proves you deserve as much as if you were interviewed! 🥳

Linux20 · 03/02/2025 15:44

I would raise it really casually like “am I ok to tell people or do I need to wait for a formal announcement?” Hopefully that will prompt some action. Maybe time your request for just before a meeting so they might say “ oh sorry yes, I’ll do it at the meeting later”

TorroFerney · 03/02/2025 15:09

sapphicy · 29/01/2025 22:13

Basically yes, maybe that's why nobody's bothered 😅

Were you interviewed? Did you apply? If not they are probably not announcing it as they should have opened it up to other applicants.

It all seems really weird and passive to me, why aren’t you telling your boss to put an email out, it’s not petty it’s a fact. So John how do I get my details updated on the system and can you let people know you’ve appointed me permanently.

YouknowIknowbest · 03/02/2025 14:49

I’d feel exactly the same as you if this happened to me, so don’t think you’re being being petty. It’s a great achievement and you’re well within your rights to want the accolades.

I agree with what a couple of others have said and would approach my direct management. My approach would be to confirm with my leader if it’s ok for me to go ahead and mention it to other internal/external people myself, in lieu of any official announcement.

Its professional, but also addresses the issue that it hasn’t really been addressed!

Congratulations! 🥳

MissMoan · 30/01/2025 10:16

Congratulations on your promotion, @sapphicy

How long ago was the promotion?
Does the company tend to make announcements immediately, or do they bank all achievements to announce at the end of the month?

I would approach your manager or whoever is responsible for this type of communication and just say lightheartedly 'where is my big announcement, then?'

Phthia · 29/01/2025 22:38

Congratulations, OP! You obviously aren't shite - there is no way they would have given you a pay rise and put into a management role if that were the case.

Is there an HR department at work? If so, it would probably be simplest to ask them why an announcement hasn't been made, and when the website will change.

pineapplebobbing · 29/01/2025 22:34

sapphicy · 29/01/2025 22:12

We can't change our own email signatures, my boss would have asked HR to ask IT to change it

Wow, really? You can normally do this yourself in Outlook.

But anyway. I completely get why you’re upset and I would be too.

Probably, but it should still be changed on the website, wait another few weeks and if it’s not changed by then, ask them nicely why, say you want to update your LinkedIn profile and you want them to tie up

Franjipanl8r · 29/01/2025 22:16

Just ask HR, say “my promotion hasn’t been officially announced as others usually are, is there something I should be aware of regarding this?”. It’s probably just a mistake. Mention it ASAP, don’t let it drag on and feel bitter. It’s absolutely not petty at all, it’s professional workplace communication.

Hankunamatata · 29/01/2025 21:59

So you were already doing the role just without formal title and pay?

Basically yes, maybe that's why nobody's bothered 😅

How could your signature change automatically? When I've done that I've always gone in manually to do it

Congratulations on your promotion! I think perhaps because you've been doing the job already people aren't seeing it as a big change, but it's still a huge achievement to be formally promoted , I would check with managers if there will be a formal announcement- I'm guessing not as your signature has already been updated - and then start to tell people yourself.

I do understand how you feel, I was in a similar position, went for promotion during a restructure, was appointed but no announcement was made, my current manager was also appointed during restructure and her promotion was announced at team meeting a huge fuss and lots of congratulations followed, when my promotion was confirmed the following week nothing...so it was slightly deflating and tbh I felt a bit of an imposter.
Anyway I told people myself and people congratulated me but tbf surprise was also expressed-there was a more obvious candidate but I did better at interview.I soon settled into new role and people quickly move on.

If I were HR and this was brought to me, I would be slightly bemused that someone took the time to go and check the company site to see if their job title had changed.

Why, it’s something most people would do, there is no point updating your LinkedIn profile if the company website says you are in a different role….what do you find bemusing about it?

I wouldn’t say anything except that the website needs updating, some companies take ages to do this though
It does sound odd that they didn’t announce it but do they announce all promotions or only really high up ones, they may have forgotten

BarbaraHoward · 29/01/2025 21:51

Is there a change who you're officially managing? If people's line manager has changed then there does need to be an announcement imo.

Ask HR… the bare minimum is getting your title changed. Maybe people think you’re just acting in the role.

magneticpeasant · 29/01/2025 21:21

I don't think it's worth crying over or the catastrophising you've been getting into.

Most likely explanation is they've just been disorganised or forgetful.

One of my (very well regarded) colleagues was accidentally deleted from our website. Someone else had the wrong job title on there. Someone else was missed by the photographer. It's just admin, not worth angst.

You've been promoted, you're doing the role, your signature has been updated. That's what matters.

You're in charge of your own thoughts, so if your own negative though spiral has dented your confidence then you're the one who can fix that. It's in your power to frame this positively and focus on what matters.

YANBU, I think it's very human to feel taken for granted - but you do run the risk of seeming petty if you raise it.

Are you happy there otherwise?

Reasonably yes. I'll just sit on this then I think, you're right it might be perceived as petty!

I wouldn't care but I don't like attention. I took about a year to update my LinkedIn after being promoted and did it so that it wouldn't be announced in everyone's feed. My job doesn't define me and don't care what others do or where they are on the ladder. However I appreciate some people need validation.
