What's your thoughts on asylum seekers?

Lynds778 · 28/01/2025 09:09

I'm all for offering asylum to those genuinely in need but I've seen a lot of negative media recently around 'fake' asylum seekers; people pretending to be from war-torn countries etc to gain entry to the country. Also videos of men giving advice for future asylum seekers on where to say you're from so that you can get in.

Also seen a lot of uproar from local communities about asylum seekers behaving anti-socially, most recently hanging around outside a primary school in Deanshanger and it's got me worried.
I'm also wondering why the large majority of asylum seekers are men and there are less women and children?

So, what's your opinion?

Also, this isn't a racist post. I would have the exact same concerns if these were white asylum seekers from Germany for example. The worry is the system is being abused by some and that we are a bit too lax when it comes to documentation and monitoring of asylum seekers.

families can only come when asylum is granted, so they are also refugees. They aren’t channel crossers.

Yes that's what my post said that figure didn't include them

The 20k is still incorrect and often stated

We're a small island with in the region of 70 million already living here. That's densely populated.

We can't just keep on paving over the countryside to allow millions more in. Or building all kinds of infrastructure projects with money we don't have.

Most of the country isn’t ’paved over’. We always had plenty of money to funnel into Tory mates pockets. Maybe they could give it back?

cardibach · 28/01/2025 21:38

Why do people cite the 20k figure, it's been on many threads and is incorrect

That doesn't include the families mentioned in the pp at 50 per day

families can only come when asylum is granted, so they are also refugees. They aren’t channel crossers. The bulk of immigration is by conventional, non-asylum means.

The country is a soft touch though, so it stands to reason most would be granted. And many are granted to avoid the grind of an ECHR claim (or granted on appeal after one).

We take fewer because we have the advantage of a full sea border, but our rates of grants are higher.

Edited

Evidence we try to avoid ECHR or have a lower bar for asylum? Or is that just your prejudice showing?

Asylum seekers are a drop in the bucket, regardless of which side of that debate you come down on.

Legal immigration is having far more of an effect on this country - maybe we should start with that?

To all the ‘do gooders’ on this thread, I ask you some questions:

  • Do you genuinely believe the majority of boats arriving in this country are arriving here from war torn countries full of deprivation? If so, where are the elderly, where are the women and children? Surely to god if if was THAT bad they wouldn’t leave their dear families behind.
  • Why are they not seeking asylum in France and nearing countries?
  • Are you willing to take in the grown men that are arriving here every day into your homes? If not where do you suppose they are housed and who do you suppose pays the upkeep of all this?

It’s not about being a ‘Bigot’ or a ‘Racist’ it’s about looking after ourselves, our family and British born, tax paying, hard working citizens of this country that is already on its knees. The country that we all one day will be leaving to our children and grandchildren. We cannot keep letting in unlimited amounts of unvetted illegal migrants into this country, where is the line?!!!!!

It’s not about legal migrants, who want to contribute to our system and abide by the British ways of living, we all know who this is about and people have had enough.

There was a poll on T.V a couple of weeks ago that asked ‘is Multiculturalism working in the U.K ‘ and 95% of people said no.

Ok. I will answer you. Since you have absolutely ignored my question about how many asylum seekers you personally know. I have no doubt the answer is none.

  1. in the main. Yes. These are different cultures who do things differently. It is not the way we generally do it in Britain, but it is culturally normal for them. There are always exceptions and awful people. But they are the exception in my experience
  2. Ever seen the ports in France? France does fuck all for asylum seekers and whilst you might agree with that stop for a minute and think. If YOU were in their situation what would you do? Stop somewhere shit or go a bit further to somewhere it’s (so not!) better?
  3. Yes. And I have.

So now YOU answer me. How many asylum seekers do you PERSONALLY know? How many claims have YOU dealt with? How much, if any, personal time or money has it cost YOU?

It'll be over 50k after a full year of 'smash the gangs' Labour.

We aren’t ’bursting at the seams’. Problems with infrastructure are down to lack of investment and proper management over 14 years of Tory rule.

We're a small island with in the region of 70 million already living here. That's densely populated.

I think we need to restrict immigration massively including asylum seekers. We can’t take on the woes of the world. Too many people take and not enough give.

I've been watching footage of what's happening in America. Trump is actually pretty smart. He is delivering rapid action and knows that masses of people will love this and love him for being so strong and making decisions. I watched the ' ICE' teams he deployed to round up all these illegal ' aliens ' yesterday and the footage of them gathering up these' illegal alien criminals'.

It did make me think of the programme ' cops'. I remembered we were sold this idea of these heroes but in reality there's alot of abusive, power hungry, scary Police officers who like the power trip and enjoy battering black people. ( Imo)

Then I thought, how many of these ICE operatives are a bit power hungry, emotionally immature, pretty thick and are just high on a power trip so will make big mistakes, go after the wrong people, not give a shit who is innocent or actually has a valid and acceptable reason to remain etc etc.

I watched border patrols at the wall as part of a documentary. The enforcer was a complete brain dead power hungry emotionally devoid red neck from everything I saw. It doesn't mean there's not a job to be done here but some of these people are scary and their views may spread to all groups they just don't like beyond ' aliens'.

cardibach · 28/01/2025 21:05

Since the majority of asylum claims are granted, the rest of your points become a bit moot.
They don’t have to seek asylum in France, or anywhere else.
Most asylum seekers stay in countries near their country of origin.
We take fewer per capita than many (most? Haven’t checked my figures lately) European countries.

The country is a soft touch though, so it stands to reason most would be granted. And many are granted to avoid the grind of an ECHR claim (or granted on appeal after one).

We take fewer because we have the advantage of a full sea border, but our rates of grants are higher.

EasternStandard · 28/01/2025 21:25

If there were a policy to turn away boats and re settle them, there is the probability I could favour that. But I'd need to be sure that we know where they're getting sent to and how exactly is that going to be physically managed.

This can be done under the convention, it's how Aus do it.

Whether the convention lasts is another issue

cardibach · 28/01/2025 21:24

What questions did you ask @DearDarcy ? They aren’t in the quote history.

Tittat50 · 28/01/2025 21:19

@MikeRafone I need to go re read posts on here so may have missed yours.

Are you someone living in an area with a high influx of asylum seekers and have negative experience of this.

DearDarcy · 28/01/2025 21:18

Wheredidallthegoodmengo · 28/01/2025 21:09

@DearDarcy since you have asked questions, I ask you one back. How many asylum seekers do you know personally? On a day to day basis? A simple “ none” will suffice or if I’m wrong, how many?

Are you going to reply to any of them or am I the only one that has to answer questions this evening? It’s only polite that you go first seeing as I did ask first …

Politicians!!

Edit - I can't edit my original post but I see now how that reads. No I don't mean asylum seekers who come from all places. To be clear - I don't trust the true ideology and beliefs that these Politicians who are so out of touch with us actually have deep down.

Edited

Oh, right!

Fair point.

MikeRafone · 28/01/2025 21:11

I’ve asked how asylum seekers have affect their life in the last 3yesrs, it’s not been answered

I’ll return the favour once mine have been answered, it’s only fair.

DearDarcy · 28/01/2025 21:16

EasternStandard · 28/01/2025 21:12

Has anyone answered them?

Noo, don’t be silly. lol

Clavinova · 28/01/2025 21:16

cardibach · 28/01/2025 21:02

What has the numbers staying under the last Labour government for to do with anything though? That’s why it’s silly. Plus those asylum seekers contributed, so not all bad, eh?

Well, the next time a poster (or an MP) refers to something from 2010 you can tell them they are being silly.
We have no idea whether those asylum seekers contributed or not, or whether they were working on the black market.

Maddy70 · 28/01/2025 21:14

Ignore the right wing press. Asylum seekers are fleeing wars etc. They aren't economic migrants no matter what garage et al say.
They are processed to ascertain this and if they aren't genuine asylum seekers they are sent back.

PandoraSox · 28/01/2025 21:13

Totally agree with you that the Tories have obliterated public services. Why don't the public go after the Royal family. Why are they allowed lo to continue creaming off the public .

I also want real reliable statistics on numbers entering on boats. If there were a policy to turn away boats and re settle them, there is the probability I could favour that. But I'd need to be sure that we know where they're getting sent to and how exactly is that going to be physically managed.

I would be in favour of deportation for criminals with dual nationalty ( high level crime only) but the fact is this is no easy thing to do.

My fear is this all spreads to other vulnerable groups like the poor and disabled. I'm in that group. We can't trust the ideology of any of these people sadly. No easy answers.

We can’t turn away boats. We have an obligation under the refugee convention to assess asylum seekers.

Reform have this in their Policy commitments. Would it be legally impossible even if they were in power? I genuinely don't know the answer.
