GMB reporting on liberation of Auschwitz (minus the Jews!)

I couldn’t see another thread on this but if there is, let me know.

AIBU to be absolutely outraged about the report on the liberation of Auschwitz of GMB without one mention of the fact they were Jewish people who were killed?

What the hell is going on in this country where we can’t even speak of the victims of the greatest atrocity ever taken place in this world?

Jews they were Jews.

So tell us what aspects they have in common?

Even if you think what's happening in Gaza is wrong, it doesn't actually have many similarities or any at all to the holocaust?

Do you compare the holocaust to any other modern day events? Or just Gaza?

Edited

I've been hearing variations on this false equivalence, since the late 90s at least, so it's not just about the current situation in Gaza.

Of course people link them. Reading what happened during the holocaust and how horrifically the Jewish people were treated, then seeing how the Palestinians have been driven out of their homes and bombed and murdered, its hard not to see echo's of a past that we all had hoped never to see again. Of course what has happened in Gaza isn't equivalent at all to the horrors of the holocaust, but denying any comparison doesn't feel realistic.

Of course it is. Its when you link them or think that there is some sort of equivalence that you need to question you motivation.

Go figure. It's perfectly possible to abhor both the Holocaust AND the actions of Israel today towards Palestine. It's called having some humanity.

I'm looking at the proportion of jews v non jews in Palestine or Israel depending on your persuasion. As you well know, Gaza has reduced in size dramatically over the past century. As has the percentage of non Jews (Arabs) to an incoming Jewish population increased in Palestine/Israel.

1946 and the end of WW2. Jews make up less than a third of the population. 1948 and the creation of the Israeli state by Western powers and that population increases to over 80% Jewish and it then increased again reaching nearly 90% at one point.

That really can't be talked away as natural changes in a population.

Why is Israel having a Jewish majority such a problem?

The rise of anti semitism has empowered their behaviour, and it is shocking and terrible that they deliberately refused to clearly state that six million Jews were slaughtered in the death camps and by the Nazis for the simple reason that they were Jews.

There was an apology, @Garlicnorth posted it earlier, read back up the thread.

You really need to educate yourself as to what the day actually is. It isn't just about just Auschwitz. It is about the attempted genocide of a number of groups of people along with those that spoke out against Nazi behaviour.

The thread is literally about reporting on the liberating of Auschwitz!

Clearly missing the point made countless times here and elsewhere. The Holocaust Memorial Day, on the date Auschwitz was liberated, commemorates SIX MILLION Jews (of one ethnicity/religion) who were exterminated. Millions of others suffered but not one entire ethnicity or religion.
It was the beginning of a national news bulletin that the word Jews was left out deliberately.

Yes, and that's what they apologised for. It was an error.

No point missed.

WestwardHo1 · 29/01/2025 14:04

It was Holocaust Memorial Day.

Holocaust is a Hebrew word, and it refers to the genocide of European Jews during WWII.

No one is saying that other groups weren't targeted too - the mentally disabled, the Roma, homosexuals, political prisoners, nor that appalling atrocities were committed in occupied Slavic lands.

It's not a Hebrew word! It's English, from Greek origin. The Hebrew term for the same event is Shoah.

‘"This failure was done in error, however clear reference to Jewish people in the correspondent news report from Auschwitz immediately followed, as well as a further extended programme report referencing the six million Jewish victims."

And there we go, no big conspiracy, so can we all calm our tits a little?

Yes they are included in the word Holocaust.
Go visit some Holocaust museums, there is an excellent one in Berlin. It includes lots of information about all the other people killed by the Nazis in camps and firing squads

Sachsenhausen. My DP and I visited it a few years ago. It's a short train journey from Berlin where the Jewish Museum is also a must see as well as the Holocaust Memorial there.

WestwardHo1 · 29/01/2025 14:53

Yes fair enough and I'm not disputing that.

I'm reading nothing which excuses the omission of the word "Jews" from the original news report, which is how the thread started.

And I also think that those who are equating what's going on in Gaza to what happened to Jews, Roma etc during WWI perhaps need to delve a little more into the history of the last 1000 years.

But as usual Palestine and Israel was brought quickly into the discussion so that the discussion can be turned to how terrible the jews are.
Nothing changes.

I’m really sorry that this so often seems to be the case.

To me, they are separate matters entirely.

Is that right? I’m not sure if the murders of all the additional (for want of a better word) people aren’t include in the word Holocaust as it’s generally understood.

They do also deserve recognition, whilst at the same time it’s important to recognise that the majority of those killed were killed because they were Jews.

Edited a typo

AND the thread was started by OP who was talking about the coverage of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

I was going to say earlier on I’m a bit disappointed this thread seems to have descended into an argument about Palestine.

Its also possible to abhor both the actions of the Israeli government AND the actions of Hamas.

AND to feel deeply for the plight of the Palestinian people who could never have deserved genocide for electing the “wrong” leaders over a decade ago, and for the Israeli people who want to live in peace but either voted for the wrong people or didn’t ever elect this criminal govt.

I'm seeing a lot of usernames here who regularly post anti-Israel rhetoric on the Conflict in the Middle East section.

Interesting.

I fully understand why no one wanted them and it's no different now with asylum seekers. But it's nothing to do with boiling frogs. What happened was horrific, people (influential people in positions of power that is, I am not talking mainly about ordinary working people) knew and did nothing. If it can't be blamed on any country there's no lesson to be learned, is there?

It's very much different from today's asylum seekers, many of whom just want to improve their lives and not all are running from persecution.

The Jewish population of Europe was prevented from leaving their home countries unless they could be smuggled out in some way to a place of safety, having had their homes, businesses and belongings confiscated by the Nazis and their willing compatriots* in the let's get rid of Jews 'game'.
*e.g. the Poles, French, Austrians etc.
