GMB reporting on liberation of Auschwitz (minus the Jews!)

I couldn’t see another thread on this but if there is, let me know.

AIBU to be absolutely outraged about the report on the liberation of Auschwitz of GMB without one mention of the fact they were Jewish people who were killed?

https://x.com/antisemitism/status/1883921202416345358

What the hell is going on in this country where we can’t even speak of the victims of the greatest atrocity ever taken place in this world?

Jews they were Jews.

My grandad was with the British forces liberating Bergen-Belsen, I remember talking to him about it, and religion didn't factor into it at the time of liberation - he, as a Catholic didn't think of those he helped liberate as Jewish (they weren't all Jews, nor were those at Auschwitz) but as people, human beings, what sat with him and his comrades was mans dreadful ability to do such things to other men, women and children, who had done no wrong to them.

They had a job to do, to take over the running of the camp, they didn't close these camps immediately and chuck everyone out, the allies took over running them and taking care of the inmates, getting them strengthened up and arranging for them to leave in an orderly and safe fashion.

Anyway this thread isn’t about Elon Musk, nice try at derailment though.

Given Elon Musk just gave a speech to the neo-Nazi connected AfD party in Germany telling them they should get over the guilt of the Holocaust and move on, I’m not sure how much benefit of the doubt he should be given.

Oh really? I don’t know that.

100% agree this is fucking outrageous.

But ya know what, I am not surprised this is happening. The persecution of Jews is just never ending isn't it? 🙄

It's really upsetting. 😢

Yes, these people were JEWS. 6 million JEWS died. 😢

This.

Appalling. Has an apology been issued yet for the 'omission' of the word Jewish?

Is it not a bit ‘odd’ to be using x, when we know its owner is a nazi?

He’s not a nazi for goodness sake. He made a stupid bloody hand gesture when he was a bit excited.

Others were mentioned, noone is saying they shouldnt be. What we are objecting to is not being specific about Jews. The Holocaust was a deliberate concerted campaign over many years to exterminate the Jewish people and an industrial complex was created to achieve that. Other people were also targetted but the focus of the project was the genocide of the Jewish people. To talk about 'people' is to completely misunderstand what the Holocaust was about.

Yes, and that "misunderstanding" is quite deliberate.

Where in Islam is this huge part?

Are we going to pretend there isn't a little ethnic conflict going on atm?

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 28/01/2025 03:16

it was far more complex

Hitlers Mein Kampf and reports evidenced at the Nuremberg Trials clearly showed are far deeper hate and plan to persecute and demolish religions as a whole
Entire MasterPlans presented regarding the Persecution of Christian Churches, for example.
If Hitler had won the War or even had it carried on for longer his entire plan would have been realised.

To try to present Hitler’s attempted extermination of the Jews as merely part of a wider attack on religion, and the attempts on this thread to suggest that the Nazis killed a lot of people and Jews shouldn’t be given any particular prominence in reporting is something that people should be particularly wary of.

Jew-hatred has a long history and Jews have been persecuted for being Jewish for thousands of years. We, here in England, did it ourselves, with the expulsion of Jews from England in 1290, not allowing them to return for 360 years. They were similarly expelled from various other European countries. The lead-up to the Holocaust wasn’t Hitler suddenly taking against the Jews randomly, but a continuation of this persecution. The Final Solution to the Jewish Question.

Overlooking the particular and long persecution of Jews leads to a failure to understand not only the Holocaust, but also current events, particularly in the Middle East.

Because the pro-Palestinian movement is the Nazism of today for Jews.

Mediaeval antisemitism was a hatred of the Jewish religion.

19th and 20th century antisemitism was a hatred of the Jewish race.

Contemporary antisemitism is the hatred of the Jewish state.

Exactly. Antisemitism is the belief that Judaism/Jewish people embody what that society considers the worst thing. So Jewish people have been Christ killers, communists, capitalists, plague spreaders, non-white and seeking to replace white people, and now they're apparently white colonizers because, surprise surprise, that is the current worst thing. And no it's not true. The majority of Israelis are Mizrahi Jews whose families were expelled from Middle Eastern countries after the formation of Israel. Since then it has been subject to constant attacks and when it defends itself, or even when it doesn't (these attacks were made possible by Israel loosening restrictions and increasing work permits) it is labelled evil. History repeating itself.

CoralHare · 28/01/2025 08:08

Jews in the millions, and also gay people, priests & religious leaders who refused to go along with the evil regime and other ethnic minorities too. I don’t mention this to diminish the appalling anti semitism but to point out it went hand in hand with racism, homophobia and seeing religious leaders who spoke out as a threat - sound familiar??

What happened at the hands of Hitler was beyond anything else in history, and certainly not comparable in any way to what has happened to the Palestinians.

The problem with that sentiment is that, if the Holocaust was so uniquely abhorrent in human history, then there is no "lesson to learn" from it because it's unlikely to happen again.

I'll attempt to paraphrase a comment I heard today which was attributed to a survivor of Auschwitz: the lesson to learn about the Holocaust isn't about concentration camps, it's about being vigilant when people start targeting other groups, because it can escalate.

In other words it's the early days of Nazi anti-Semitism we should be learning from, and be vigilant in today's world.

Such a powerful point. I heard another interview with a holocaust survivor that was sent to a camp when asked about how everyone could let this happen (ordinary Germans of the day). He said (in large part) because it’s the normalisation of small things. It’s like boiling a frog. They grow over time and that in his view until Kristall Nacht (apologies for spelling if wrong) it was just a series of ‘small’ things that happened and didn’t seem so bad in isolation, Being vigilant to recognise these things and anticipate where they might go is so important.

I'm seeing a lot of usernames here who regularly post anti-Israel rhetoric on the Conflict in the Middle East section.

Interesting.

Not sure why that’s interesting? It’s very possible to understand what happened at Auschwitz and the Holocaust and honour those who died whilst at the same time being disgusted by the actions of Israel.

Or you somehow saying in a very twisted way that Jews are responsible for the genocide of the Palestinians and therefore those who disapprove of Israel’s actions shouldn’t respect Holocaust Menorial Day. Isn’t that actually very anti-Semitic? You might want to ask MN to remove your post.

Aftergloww · 28/01/2025 07:24

@Livelovebehappy you think they’re just being “pushed out”?

Look at how things started before the camps. It was slowly pushing the Jewish people out too and cornering them into ghettos.

Is it not a bit ‘odd’ to be using x, when we know its owner is a nazi?

Agreed. As much as I agree that GMB should have mentioned the vast majority of victims were Jews followed by Roma, other minorities, homosexuals and and the disabled, I remain utterly confused as to why many Jewish organisations appear to have swept Musk’s Nazi salute under the carpet.

Here, the OP is outraged GMB didn’t mention the word ‘Jew’ in a report and PP have rushed to condemn it as a sign in the rise of antisemitism. However, the richest man in the world went on stage, did 2 unambiguous Nazi salutes and it’s either tumbleweeds and crickets or a rush to play it down and give him the benefit of the doubt that many others wouldn’t get. And still use X.

The overwhelming majority of people murdered were Jewish. Hitler's.specific target for extermination was Jewry. This was the plan. The minute details which went into planning and transporting and slaughtering Jews was staggering. Even when the war was coming to an end, the Nazis kept the trains running to carry Jews to their death.
It was the greatest atrocity ever devised and was aimed at Jews.

Exactly this. Extermination of Jews was fundamental to Nazis. It was their final solution to their perceived problem. It wasn’t just one potential solution to a range of different issues. It was The Final Solution. It was about Jews.

It’s sad that many people have tried to derail on social media sites that it’s Holocaust Memorial Day. I’ve seen a couple of attempts on my Facebook groups today where people have referenced our thoughts being with the people murdered at Auschwitz only for some pro Palestinian groups coming on there ranting about the Palestine situation being similar. It sickens me that it is being uttered in the same breath as the Holocaust. What happened at the hands of Hitler was beyond anything else in history, and certainly not comparable in any way to what has happened to the Palestinians. Why can’t they just let people remember today all those who were murdered by Hitler, instead of making it all about Palestine.

Because the pro-Palestinian movement is the Nazism of today for Jews.

Mediaeval antisemitism was a hatred of the Jewish religion.

HellsBalls · 28/01/2025 06:57

If anyone can bear to listen to GB News, they certainly weren’t mincing their words during their shows. They were very clear the Holocaust was an attempted extermination of the Jews.

On the Beeb they constantly said "mostly Jews" when talking about the 1.2m people put to death there and I was like "yeah, overwhelmingly!! Wtf?",

It was mostly Jews who were murdered at Auschwitz
1 million Jews along with 100,000 people people who belonged to other groups as mentioned previously

Poland itself lost many people in the Holocaust.3 million of the Jewish people who were murdered came from Poland - and it lost 90% of its Jewish population

They invited a Jewish Auschwitz survivor onto the show to talk about her ordeal so I don't see how this is rewriting history.

The channel 4 reporting is normally really good on the holocaust, which is a weird thing to even write. If its still on iplayer grandchild of the holocaust with Renee Salt is an awful, but very good watch.
