I couldn’t see another thread on this but if there is, let me know.

AIBU to be absolutely outraged about the report on the liberation of Auschwitz of GMB without one mention of the fact they were Jewish people who were killed?

https://x.com/antisemitism/status/1883921202416345358

What the hell is going on in this country where we can’t even speak of the victims of the greatest atrocity ever taken place in this world?

Jews they were Jews.

German concentration camps killed 11 million people, of whom 6 million were Jews. Other people were involved, 😔

Yes, but the point about Nazism was its inherent anti semitism. It was totally paranoiac. The Jews were poisoning the blood of Germany; they were at once responsible for Communism, but also responbsible for Capitalism. Anti Semitism was an inherent pillar and principle of Nazism. The Jews were at the root of all that was bad and of the decline and losss of confidence in Germany that occured as a result of World War 1.

No it is not. You clearly do not know your history.

Because the victims were not all Jews. What happened to them at the hands of the Nazi was awful, but the same was done to the Disabled, people who opposed the Nazi regimen, Roma People, Poles, Serbs, Jehovahs Witnesses, Freemasons, Homosexuals and several other groups. In most reports on the Holocaust, only Jews are mentioned.

The whole 'final solution' was predicated on the extermination of the Jews of Europe. Raging anti-semitism was the very core and modus operandi of Nazism. But Yes, other 'undesirables' and opponents were killed too; but Hitler imagined tha it was the Jews who were responbsible for all of Germany's woes. He thought they were responsible for everything bad that was happening in Germany. Everything was a Jewish plot.

But "6 million Jewish people were killed in concentration camps in the second world war" isn't factually correct, is it?

6 million is the total number of Jewish people who died as a result of Nazi actions or who were directly killed by them. Or am I misreading the statistics?

Saying they all died in concentration camps is a gross oversimplification. It doesn't acknowledge that deaths also occurred in ghettos, mobile gas units, shootings in mass graves etc.

There were concentration camps for the Nazis political opponents too.....but the point about Aushwitz -Birkenau was that it was an industrial scale death camp - created specifically in order to speed up the process by bringing in Jews, in railway cars, from around Europe - directly to the gas chambers.

Who liberated Auschwitz? The people not invited to the ceremony today that's who.

It is so utterly disgraceful that history is being completely rewritten and the people involved erased from the story.

I agree that a Russian representative should have been there.

That looks to me like a genuine error where either the person doing the autocue script accidentally deleted the word “Jewish” or the presenter accidentally skipped it. A serious error but the script only “makes sense” if you add in the word Jewish at the beginning. Otherwise she’s just saying six million people were murdered plus another million people for different reasons. Hopefully they will clarify.

That was not an error, it was an editorial decison. Another presenter did the same thing later on.

How utterly bizarre to do that; as if they are trying to erase Jewish people from the holocaust, and re-focus people's attenton on the fact that the nazis murdered many others too.

People cannot be permitted, even for just one day, to remember why there was a need for a jewish homeland in the first place. There must be no sympathy for Jewish people and the persecutions they have suffered in order to keep the hatred of Israel alive.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/01/2025 16:16

To say that some felt LESS horror than the British is diminishing the horror felt by all Liberators and a direct attempt at rewriting history

Yes it is, @AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen, and anyway how would they know?

Very many were involved in the liberation of the camps, and if Harry or Bill were seen weeping while Vlad and Igor remained stony-faced, might the cause of both not be simple shock?

Watching the footage is bad enough but actually being there is unimaginable, and they couldn't even take it out on the senior nazis because most of them - knowing what was coming - had cleared out by then

I agree. It sounds as though the word 'Jewish' was originally there, but removed as it doesn't make sense as it stands when they refer to other people being in the camp due to being Polish, or disabled or gay or from some other ethnic group.

It depends whether it was a genuine mistake or deliberately removed. Has anyone from GMB commented?

TheRewritingOfHistoryBegins · 28/01/2025 15:33

ITV have issued an apology but imo Ranvir doesn’t sound very sincere.

www.jewishnews.co.uk/gmb-apologises-for-omitting-the-word-jews-in-holocaust-memorial-day-segment/

If anyone could post a link to the video that isn’t twitter (don’t want to be called a Nazi apologist again) that would be grand.

Don’t see the fuss myself -
seems like an error in the script because ‘people’ is repeated twice.

Then you prove the point of the original post. The Holocaust Memorial Day is primarily about SIX million of one specific religion/ethnicity - Jews, not merely 'people' in general.

I wasn’t ’defending the nazi salute’ as well you know. All I know about Elon Musk is he is an excitable intelligent crazy neurodivergent man and no I don’t believe it was a Nazi salute (I could be wrong but don’t think I am)
But keep going on about me, you may even be able to derail the thread enough so we don’t have to talk about Jews anymore…you’d like that wouldn’t you?

Edited

Sorry OP but I really think you have lost the argument over Musk's obvious salute here .
I for one do not want to derail this thread as you rightly pointed out what GMB failed to do in their news report yesterday.

LetThereBeLove · 28/01/2025 14:54

Simonjt · 28/01/2025 14:27

Well the OP is defending the use of a nazi salute, so there we go.

Utterly bizarre of the OP. It's a fact that Musk supports far right wing parties in Europe. He is far from stupid and knew very well how his salute would be interpreted. It was a Nazi salute.

Deetelves · 28/01/2025 14:44

Simonjt · 28/01/2025 14:26

So it is okay to go around making nazi salutes as long as you say you’re excited while doing it? Okay, got it.

Just trying to think if the last time - while excited - that I threw my arm up TWICE in a Nazi style salute? Mmm. Not when we won the rugby. Not when we won the Euros… not when Ingot that promotion… not when DD scored the win goal in the cup tie… mmm.
Nope, drawing a blank.
In fact. Now I think about it I have never, ever, ever seen someone do that in person, ever. And I do know some excitable neurondiverse people.
Perhaps they aren’t ‘brilliant’ enough? Or perhaps they just aren’t admirers of fascists?

Sorry you lost me at that! Outrage at the word ‘people’ but defending what was obviously a fascist/ Nazi salute? Or was it ‘Roman’.

Nah, sorry OP - you can’t have it both ways.

It is not a matter of record at all and no one should be trying to take the upper hand on the emotions felt by certain Liberators as less worthy than their own!

There are, for example, no records of British soldiers killed specifically trying to liberate concentration camps. In fact at Belsen there was a truce around the camp to protect them in advance of Typhus.

The Red Army however in liberating Auschwitz, Birkenau and Monowitz lost hundreds of their men in the fighting to get near the camps.

To say that some felt more horror than the British is diminishing the horror felt by all the Liberators and a direct attempt at rewriting history.

It is a matter of record that the Russians who liberated Auschwitz were not as moved by what they found as one might have thought. Inmates were sent back to the Soviet Union under forced labour. Women were sexually assaulted by their 'liberators'. On the other hand, British soldiers like my uncle, were profoundly moved and scarred by their experience when they liberated Bergen Belsen on 15 April 1945.

It is not a matter of record at all and no one should be trying to take the upper hand on the emotions felt by certain Liberators as less worthy than their own!

What the hell am I reading? A national broadcaster reports on Holocaust Memorial Day without mentioning the word "Jew" until two minutes in, and people are defending it? An MP tweets on Holocaust Memorial Day and fails to mention the word "Jew", and people are defending it? What the hell is going on here?

If it's any comfort OP, the BBC's coverage was absolutely excellent. And I urge everyone on here to watch The Last Musician of Auschwitz, which was shown on BBC2 last night. It is devastating.

At the end of it, once commentator pointed out something which has occurred to me at times - that Jews don't just mourn the inhumanity and the murder. They mourn the almost successful erasure of 1000 years of history and European culture - music, learning, dancing, language, cuisine, family...the list goes on. 3 million Jews lived in Poland for example in 1939. Now there are 10,000. The population of a small town.

And I agree about the Royal Family yesterday. They did us proud, unlike ITV.

I'm looking at the proportion of jews v non jews in Palestine or Israel depending on your persuasion. As you well know, Gaza has reduced in size dramatically over the past century. As has the percentage of non Jews (Arabs) to an incoming Jewish population increased in Palestine/Israel.

1946 and the end of WW2. Jews make up less than a third of the population. 1948 and the creation of the Israeli state by Western powers and that population increases to over 80% Jewish and it then increased again reaching nearly 90% at one point.

That really can't be talked away as natural changes in a population.

Yes, there were all those pesky Jews thrown out of Egypt, other Middle Eastern countries, North Africa, etc. Just because they'd been ethnically cleansed out of all those countries. But now, according to you, they are "non settled" in Israel.

6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis. 6 to 8 million others were killed by them.

But the point is that SIX million of ONE SPECIFIC ethnicity/religion (aka Jews religious and/or assimilated) were exterminated.
The millions of others were spread over many ethnicities, religions, disabilities etc.

StrikeForever · 28/01/2025 13:43

LizzieW1969 · 28/01/2025 12:55

Czechs too actually, though they aren’t often mentioned either. Hitler hated all Slavic people. I’m mentioning this because I am half Czech; my grandfather was shot by the Gestapo just before the end of the war and a great uncle died in Maunthausen concentration camp.

However, it’s true that the vast majority of victims were Jews and it’s appalling that GMB didn’t mention this. If it was a mistake it was a very bad one and it could have easily been corrected. There should definitely be an apology to the Jewish community.

6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis. 6 to 8 million others were killed by them.
