GMB reporting on liberation of Auschwitz (minus the Jews!)

I couldn’t see another thread on this but if there is, let me know.

AIBU to be absolutely outraged about the report on the liberation of Auschwitz of GMB without one mention of the fact they were Jewish people who were killed?

https://x.com/antisemitism/status/1883921202416345358

What the hell is going on in this country where we can’t even speak of the victims of the greatest atrocity ever taken place in this world?

Jews they were Jews.

How and why do you think that right wing nationalism has arisen in Israel? Israel was founded on broadly socialist principles.

How many times have the Palestinian leadership turned down settlements and two state solutions over the decades? How many intifadas and campaigns of terrorism can any nation tolerate?

You do realise that words have meaning. War is not the exact same thing as genocide. Have you witnessed Israel transporting muslim arabs from around the Middle East into Gaza in cattle trucks - to especially designed gas chambers?

Israel is a modern, democratic country and all citizens have equal rights - and that includeds the 20% of the population that is Arab - Muslim. Everyone has the vote, can sit in the Knesset, and take up any role or profession in society.

Until Hamas and other extremist organisations cease with their jihadi campaign, israel will do what it has to do to secure its borders and defend its citizens. War aims are standard in any conflict but war in and of itself is not genocide.

If genocide is your main concern i take it you have a lot to say about what is going on in Sudan at present, or what has been going on in Northern syria, or any number of other places in the world?

Or maybe you are just on a bandwagon, and when that wagon departs so will you.

Yep.

You and other PPs were correct, but GMB were not. In a single sentence they made at least four errors which were variously offensive/misleading:

Six million mystery people killed in the camps - no, they were Jews, and only some of them in the camps. Two errors.

Millions of 'others' killed for ... reasons ... - the syntax implies they are not people (self-evidently wrong) or that none of them were in the camps (factually wrong). Two errors.

How is it possible to do such a shoddy job? This wasn't breaking news, reported on the fly. And it's potentially sensitive. Not only Jews but also Romani could justifiably be annoyed.

I think it's obliviousness and callousness rather than hatred, but who knows?

I believe it was absolutely deliberate. I cannot see how it could have been anything but.

She also got it wrong. I specifically said in the death camps and by the Nazis to allow for the fact that they weren't all slaughtered in the death camps.

I was correct.

I noticed that the banner that one of the hostages was paraded in front of this morning referred to 'Nazi Zionists'. Its Holocaust inversion.

Indeed, my immediate assumption when anyone whatabouts Gaza when the Holocaust comes up is that they just hate Jewish people. If that's not the case they need to know that pretty much everyone who doesn't hate Jewish people also makes the assumption that they are hateful anti semites.

I agree. There are a fair number of posters who could be seen that way here. And no, I don't need to name them, before anyone jumps down my throat.

meh2025 · 30/01/2025 11:09

noblegiraffe · 30/01/2025 08:13

Antisemites compare Gaza to the Holocaust deliberately to upset Jews and they have been doing since well before this invasion. It's probably best avoided as a comparison 1) to avoid suspicion of antisemitism and 2) because it's not a good comparison.

I can see a comparison where thousands of people are displaced and brutalised, told to move and become homeless, mudered by starvation, lack of any medical facilities, treated as dirt because of their religion, being made to feel inhuman

The conflict began after Hamas carried out the October 7th attacks. Can you tell us what the equivalent trigger of the holocaust was?

Displacement? Yes.. this is a war/conflict. Displacement occurs in most wars....like Ukraine, Sudan, etc.

As for starvation....this has been going on for over a year....there wouldn't be a single person left in Gaza if no food had got in. Much of the aid has been stolen by Hamas.

These comparisons you've made are incredibly vague.

It's like saying, some people were mean to other people

People desperate to pick apart my above post might think there isn't any comparison at all are welcome to their opinion. I can see a comparison where thousands of people are displaced and brutalised, told to move and become homeless, mudered by starvation, lack of any medical facilities, treated as dirt because of their religion, being made to feel inhuman.
I did say "what has happened in Gaza isn't equivalent at all to the horrors of the holocaust " , obviously the murder of 6 million people doesn't compare with anything in recent history but to me denying there is no comparison at all isn't true.

That's my opinion, if you don't share it, that's up to you.

But this doesn't come under a heading of shrugging that this is a matter of opinion. Sorry, but you just cant get away with that, particularly when the war in Gaza is being used as a vehicle for prejudice now. All the things you drscribe are the horrific consequences of many wars. The Holocaust was all those things but so much more. It was a deliberate, strategic, planned attempt to exterminate a whole people, openly planned and justified. The whole german state was geared towards this outcome. There is no significant comparison.

Of course people link them. Reading what happened during the holocaust and how horrifically the Jewish people were treated, then seeing how the Palestinians have been driven out of their homes and bombed and murdered, its hard not to see echo's of a past that we all had hoped never to see again. Of course what has happened in Gaza isn't equivalent at all to the horrors of the holocaust, but denying any comparison doesn't feel realistic.

I’m keen on facts and the truth in everything.
No point in posting stuff that’s clearly inaccurate.

Whats the point of threads filled with that.

If people aren’t interested I guess they’ll scroll on by.
I can’t believe I’m having to justify the relevance of facts ! Moving on …

It would help if you would actually read what was being posted and then stop with your incorrect 'corrections'.

Yes, me too, that's why I said in the death camps and by the Nazis, which was correct.

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 29/01/2025 20:48

The facts not correct there
2.5 million Jews were killed in the death camps
The other 3.5 million were killed in ghettos, executed elsewhere etc.
Thats where the figure of 6million comes from.

Nope, I said in the death camps and by the Nazis, which is quite correct.

wholettheturnipsburn · 29/01/2025 23:56

But @ssd there is no comparison

Absolutely none

No you are incorrect. The pp said 'in the death camps and by the Nazis' so they are absolutely right.

If you are going to insist on this pedantry you could at least get your facts right, https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/documenting-numbers-of-victims-of-the-holocaust-and-nazi-persecution

How Many People did the Nazis Murder?

Behind the number of victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution are people whose hopes and dreams were destroyed. Learn about the toll of Nazi policies.

The rise of anti semitism has empowered their behaviour, and it is shocking and terrible that they deliberately refused to clearly state that six million Jews were slaughtered in the death camps and by the Nazis for the simple reason that they were Jews.

Why is Israel having a Jewish majority such a problem?

And why doesn't anyone care about the fact that the only Jews in Gaza nowadays are hostages, despite there being really, really old synagogues in Gaza? Gaza was ethnically cleansed of all Jews and no one cares.

Anyway, glad there has been an apology. I wonder if Rayner has apologised for her omission?

The ability to discriminate between one type of thing and another can be a very valuable tool. Even if each type of thing involves death and destruction.

When teaching on the nature and meaning of 'Tragedy' as an English Teacher, I found it a useful exercise to present the students with a sample of newspaper cuttings about a variety of different deaths, in differnt types of circumstance...and asked them to consider which most fitted the definition of 'tragic', and then order them on a scale of 'most to least tragic'......and give explanations as to why.

Shortshriftandlethal · 29/01/2025 20:26

If anyone has not yet watched it 'The Last Musician of Auschwitz' is well worth a watch. So well put together. The sort of thing the BBC, at its best, does very well. ( BBC I Player)

Why of course? Anyway, please can you explain the similarities - I mean specifics, not generalised comments about the horrors shared by all wars.
