Grandparents “Names”… do we get a choice?

Okay relatively lighthearted. I’m just wondering if anyone else has been in this situation.

My husband and I are expecting our first baby. Both sets of parents are very excited- this will be the first grandchild on both sides.

My parents have said they’d love to be called Granny and Grandad.

We we’re with my husbands parents earlier and it came up, and his mum said they want to be known as Nana and Grumpy.

Grumpy? I…hate that 🤣🙈

So not Grandad, or Gramps, or Pops… Grumpy. GRUMPY.

So our child (in a few years of course- not expecting a speaking baby!) will literally be saying “Hi Grumpy, can we go play?” And “Grumpy can I have a snack?”

And are we meant to say “right come on, we’re going to Nana and Grumpys!”

Argh I just really hate it. Why can’t he just be Grandad?

But like… do we get a say in this? Could my husband have a word and say no? Or is it up to them what they want to be referred as?

YABU- stop being so precious and let them be called what they want by their grandchild

YANBU- no it’s weird

I take it it's the first baby in the family? Feel sorry for any sibling that then has a child and so their grandparents names are fixed and you end up with two grandmas and granddad's and spend your time saying either grandma X or 'your mums mum' to clarify.

Luckily my husband and I are both only children so don’t need to worry about this… phew!

My neighbour is Grumpy to his 11 grandchildren, most of them adults now, he loves it and all the children adore him. His own children and their partners just embraced it, let him be who he wants to be. Nicely - It's not about you and how you think you might feel calling him that in a few years time

I’ve e never met any one in real life who does this. Nan and grandad are nan and grandad, who actually has a discussion about what to call them. Surely you go with whatever is used in your local area. Stop making something out of nothing.

Here it is mainly Grandma and Grandpa and Nana and Papa / Poppa with a few Oma /Opa’s

I know of 1 nanny, 1 granny and no grandads

There are loads of different names used in my local area. My children’s friends use, from what I’ve heard them say, Nana, Gran, Granny, Nan, Nanna, Mama, Grandad, Grandpa, Papa… surely no area has particular set names? Mine have a Granny, a Grandad, a Nana and a Papa. Neither set of their grandparents live in the same place as us, ILs live abroad and my parents are 1.5 hours away. So whose local area would you choose anyway? Yours or theirs?

FWIW I'd hate it if I was called nanny or grandma 😵‍💫

I'm fascinated by people wanting to come up with these weird monikers rather than use Granny/Nanny/Grandma. My parents have done the same. Why? Is it because people think it makes them feel old?!

With my mum, yes, it was because she has a big issue around feeling old, and also she wants to be cool/ unique/ trendy.

YANBU to be a bit frustrated about it (I also think Grumpy is a bit daft).

My mum had some odd ideas about what she wanted to be called. I just told her whatever she wanted was fine although I was secretly hoping she'd eventually just revert to grandma (and she did - with some persuasion from my dad!)

I don't think it's a hill to die on but it is weird what some people come up with.

Yes! I’ve heard people say this so many times, they associate the grandma label with the older generation and they don’t see themselves as old. And I think the desire to be unique.
The worst one I’ve heard is ‘glam-ma’. Gave myself the ick just typing that.

JustMyView13 · 28/01/2025 06:02

My response would be: oh, that’s different. DC won’t be able to get any birthday or Christmas cards with that on!

I think it's sweet! I don't like traditional GP names and told my 12 year old son who lives big bang theory and young sheldon I wanted to be Memaw ... he lived that lol - hopefully it'll be a good 15-20 years het!

They can decide what they want, that doesn't mean your child will use it.

The queen was known as 'Garry' because Prince William couldn't say 'Granny'.

We had similar in our family, I'm not putting the name because it would absolutely out me.

Also as you said, your baby will not be talking at birth and as s/he starts to speak there are words children struggle with, hence 'baby talk' often ending in 'y' endings. I predict husband's dad will be, "Gummy".

Andoutcomethewolves · 28/01/2025 03:25

Aww I quite like it! Your DC may choose a different name anyway, my dad was meant to be 'grandad' to his eldest grandchild (my DN) but ended up as Gaga as DN couldn't pronounce grandad. It stuck and now all my DNs (age range from 4 to late teens, from multiple siblings) call my parents Nana and Gaga 🤣

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 28/01/2025 03:15

I kinda love it!

Makes me think of the seven dwarfs.

meh2025 · 28/01/2025 03:04

Don't worry about it, and just call them whatever you want to call them, your kid will follow suit.

Your child will likely use a name that suits them anyway, it's often quite organic.

PeloMom · 28/01/2025 03:00

I got news for them - they don’t get to choose. Your kid will call them what they can/ want and then will stick🤣🤣. My IL aren’t called anything anywhere close to what they wished as kid couldn’t pronounce it. Then they found their names endearing and they stuck.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 28/01/2025 01:30

Well Grumpy describes my FIL really well so it'd be hilarious if the kids called him that. Neither of you get to decide, sometimes the kids chose for themselves

NotVeryFunny · 28/01/2025 01:19

It's up to the grandparents what they are called....until the grandchildren decide to call them something different!!!

I only put my foot down when my insane ex MIL wanted my DD to call her mum. That’s not happening.

My mum refused to have any sort of nicknames and just wanted to be called by her first name. I thought it was a bit odd but whatever.

My dad called his grandparents Mam and Dad, which I thought was (a) mental and (b) confusing but that's what he did and his siblings and cousins followed suit.

Like the bird? I’ve never heard this one, is it common in the UK?

This isn’t how it usually works in practice. My MiL invented a cute name adding Gr to her first name which starts with a vowel - think GrAlison or GrEllie. From as soon as he could speak DS called her Oo-lah and that is what she is now known as to all the family 😁. My DM wasn’t too bothered whether she was Gran or Nanny etc, but we live in Wales (even though she doesn’t) so she has become Nain. People just don’t choose their own nickname.

Kind of a Ronseal solution if her name happens to be Annie Grin
