Hairdresser ruined my top

So, I had an appointment at the hairdresser at the weekend. Colour, cut, blow dry. All fine until I got home and realised that the back of my top near the neck was all stained (I’m assuming from the dye). I would usually be annoyed, but I was even more annoyed as I had only bought the top the previous day. I messaged my hairdresser about it, with a photo and asking whether they recommend that customers wear an old top to appointments as this had happened to mine. I thought she may offer to replace it. She didn’t, she just sorry that happened. The more I think about it, the more p*ed off I am! It wasn’t an expensive top or anything, so I wasn’t out in anything fancy but it is ruined and I can’t use it now. AIBU for thinking they should offer to replace it or knock some money off my next appointment as a goodwill gesture?? Or should I have worn an old top that I didn’t mind getting ruined??

Picture OP? Some wise Mumsnetter may have some tips to remove the dye.

I’ve never had dye on my clothes visiting the hairdressers, but I’m aware there’s a chance it could happen.

I've had hair dye on a white top once. She put hairspray on it and it washed right out. Have you actually tried washing it? Are you sure it's ruined?

I messaged my hairdresser about it, with a photo and asking whether they recommend that customers wear an old top to appointments

Did you ask if they recommend that customers look both ways crossing the street too?

HPandthelastwish · 27/01/2025 19:59

This is a you problem. It's not rocket science that wearing a new top to have your hair dyed is a daft decision.

Live and learn and wear an old one next time.

SometimesCalmPerson · 27/01/2025 19:57

Yanbu to think that they should protect clients clothes properly. It’s not that hard. But if you want them to replace the top yabu to expect them to offer. You need to ask.

sjs42 · 27/01/2025 19:57

I do think that wearing a new top to get your hair dyed is a bit of a strange decision. I don’t think she should replace it. Sorry.

Sorry op this is on you. You knew you were getting g your hair dyed, wear a top that it either wouldn't show on or you're not bothered if it gets dye on.
You shouldn't need telling to have basic common sense.

Mosaic123 · 27/01/2025 19:56

I'm sorry, i think you took a bit of a risk wearing a brand new top and having your hair coloured.

It wasn't great that the top is stained.

However, i've had my hair coloured numerous times and it hasn't happened yet.

Just like I don't wear earrings when I go to the hairdresser in case they get pulled out I think there is always a slight risk of dye on clothing.

It's a shame of course.

You wear an old top

fairycakes1234 · 27/01/2025 19:54

Yanbu, surely they noticed and deliberately kept quiet about it, and noone expexts to get dye on clothes, that's why hairdressers put towels/gowns on when doing colours. Don't think there is anymore you can do though.

HeddaGarbled · 27/01/2025 19:54

asking whether they recommend that customers wear an old top to appointments as this had happened to mine

That’s such a dishonest approach. You don’t want an answer to that question.

Aliceinunderland · 27/01/2025 19:54

Isn't it common knowledge to wear clothes that you don't mind getting dye on when getting your hair dyed? Sorry OP I think on this occasion YABU

Mercedes45 · 27/01/2025 19:52

Should have worn an old top. I always do do for this very reason 🤷‍♀️

Nellyelephanty · 27/01/2025 19:52

Well that was stupid of you wasn’t it?!

SlaveToAGoldenRetriever · 27/01/2025 19:52

YABU to be stupid enough to wear a brand new top to the hairdressers! Anytime I’m getting my hair dyed I make sure I wear a top that I’m not too precious about as it’s very common to get some dye on the back of the neck. Use some common sense OP
