If you were faced with the choice between saving your partner or a stranger's baby, what would you do?

P.s I ADORE my partner

Soitis83 · 27/01/2025 13:01

Baby, every single time. As a mother, I would hope someone chose my baby too

ChristmasFluff · 27/01/2025 13:00

I'd save the baby.

I can't say why, it's just an irrational thing and probably a species survival programming.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/01/2025 12:41

Don't have a partner. But I'd save the baby over my best friend. Because if I didn't 1)I'd hate myself so much I'd end up killing myself; 2)she's a nice person so she'd never forgive me for letting the baby die.

FrangipaniBlue · 27/01/2025 12:21

It depends entirely on the situation.....

Being asked to choose "who lives who dies" where the outcome is an absolutely given then I'd save my DH all day long.

Faced with an on the spot act now type situation like fire or drowning I think I would reactively grab the baby first without really thinking about it..... something in our subconscious would be saying "there's a chance DH can get himself out" whereas a baby absolutely can't save itself.

Hecatoncheires · 27/01/2025 11:24

I'd save my husband but would feel bad for the baby, if that redeems me any....

SerendipityJane · 27/01/2025 11:17

I can't believe (or rather would rather not believe) that no one here thought of Sophies Choice as this thread unfolded.

Mama2many73 · 27/01/2025 11:08

During covid our 13yr old had similar questions from school. We had some amazing debates. One was your relative (whichever ie mother, sister etc as aimed at young people) etc vs a single railway worker, discuss, then to further the discussion it was a train full of families .

There's no 'correct' answer everyone's situation/ decision will be different. Both ne and DH said we'd be mortified if someone saved us rather than many other people, esp where chikdren /babies were involved, but that wouldn't be us making the decision.

ItGhoul · 27/01/2025 10:50

I'd save my partner over anyone's baby, to be honest, not just a stranger's baby.

I'd save my partner over any other adult in my life, too.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 26/01/2025 23:46

Definitely saving my DP. I'd massively struggle to bring up our kids without him and my kids are more important to me than a random baby.

Also my DP has saved many lives in his job, including various babies/kids, so I feel he's earned being saved in return.

Not necessarily if it was a gun one bullet

The question is who do you save, not who do you kill!

DenialisAriver · 26/01/2025 23:08

I’d save my husband

Kneeboobs · 26/01/2025 23:07

It would have to be the baby for me.But making the choice would drive me to suicide anyway.

certainagedwoman · 26/01/2025 23:06

I can't vote as using the app, but as someone whose husband is currently in hospital with advanced cancer, if I could I know that I would save him over any other person in the world (we don't have kids)

JMSA · 26/01/2025 23:06

GoldPoster · 26/01/2025 22:30

Partner with no doubt. I don’t like babies. but of if it were a child between 3 and 16, still my partner, bit I’d be wracked with guilt.

Shock
nellythe · 26/01/2025 23:04

He wouldn’t allow me to save him he’d absolutely insist I saved the baby.

I often think of a lifeboat situation, I think it's meant to be those who need assistance and children first, to get them sorted as of course there should be enough space for all.

But when we've had disasters, I can think of situations where people have thought of themselves, even staff and the captain getting in lifeboats, not helping passengers and forgetting anyone else. And people pushing others out of the way.

Also given fear in such a situation may make people think irrationally but in some situations it's clear that people think only of themselves. Of course there are always stories of heroism and selflesness in other situations too.

I also suspect my partner would urge me to save the baby, not him.

Mine would too. But I’d want him to save me 😂

In times of danger/famine/disaster, people will always put the children first. Yet looks like most posters are choosing their partner to survive before the baby.

This is the problem with many humans, they don't understand the intrinsic value of a person, but ascribe value to other humans depending on how useful the person is to them.

I think it's easy to say online though. So while I lean towards DH in this hypothetical scenario, in reality? A tiny baby looking at me or a grown man? I honestly think it'd be far more difficult, which is why I find this thread interesting. I've been chatting to DH about it tonight too, and we both keep swinging back and forth.

On the one hand, I'm in love with DH and the pain I'd feel, the loss of a good man, and the father of my children, and how that would impact them. On the other...an innocent baby.

It's easy to mull over if you're not there. I genuinely don't know what I would do. From the comfort of my home with DH giving me a foot rub, him. But the reality? Probably not so clear cut.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 26/01/2025 23:01

Baby.

It would emotionally kill me, but I'd save the baby.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 26/01/2025 23:00

Itiswhysofew · 26/01/2025 19:12

What if they were side by side needing to be saved?😯 OMG, how could you not save a baby? What a question🫣

Because I wouldn’t leave my own children without a dad to save a stranger, baby or otherwise 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mozzarellaballs · 26/01/2025 22:59

Selfishly or is it, I would pick my partner especially if they are your kids dad because you have to think of their pain too but then what if the mum was begging you to save her baby as the husband had already had a life and the baby hadn't. Very hard decision. I couldn't look the mum in the eyes at the same time if I picked partner. I've really gone deep into this. Imagine you had the baby and their life was in someone elses hand and you were begging them to save your baby over their partner and they picked their partner, the devastation. What a question 😅

CinnamonJellyBeans · 26/01/2025 22:59

...This is why we have slavery and exploitation of other humans

boxyboxs · 26/01/2025 22:54

I think instinctively in a side by side situation it would be a baby. Don't forgot it would go viral on SM and on top of survivors guilt the nation would vilify you.
