To think bums should be covered in a public pool?

I may be being unreasonable and I’m just old and out of touch… took my kids swimming today at our local public pool and there was a lady wearing one of those swimming costumes that is basically a thong at the back? I saw lots of them in the beach during the summer which I kind of understand as it helps you get a very high cut tan/eliminates tan lines but I felt a bit weird seeing one in an indoor pool? Not sure where boundaries lie…? Happy to be told IABU but wondered what others think?

Slight diversion but I just don't see men judging each other's choices anywhere near as much as women judge each other's choices.

Over 350 judgy comments and counting.

Because they are choices. Largely directed rated by fashion. Funny that the G string bikinis of the 80's haven't been seen anywhere for years, despite all the ' it's so much more comfortable having a string up your crack" brigade.
Its a bad look not because there is anything wrong with tits or arses but because it's so performative. As someone said why are we not putting kids in these types of swimwear?

This could go the same way as mask wearing during Covid.

Why not put a mask over the bum?

Could that be perhaps that this is is a mainly female forum discussing mainly female issues

For a second then buy him a beer and move on.

Edited

Someone needs to start a thread on Reddit pretending to be a man wanting to wear a thong swimming. I bet you'd find the majority
of comments would no support the plan.

Dandylione · 26/01/2025 21:36

I mean I know what you mean but if a man wore a thong at the beach other men absolutely would judge him and take the piss.

For a second then buy him a beer and move on.

Yeah, the disingenuous thing about “OH it’s just so much more Comfortable!” is a bit silly. We all know perfectly well that these are sold to young women precisely because they are sexualising and boundary-pushing, and for men to look at young women’s bums. Or we’d be finding them in the swimwear ranges for the older lady at M&S and on QVC.

When they’re spotted on everyone’s mum and gran at pool Zumba and aquarobics, then we might believe that it’s just a perfectly normal style for comfort, just a body part like all the others, etc. etc.

You do realise comfort is a personal preference? Not a universal thing we all must agree on?

I have no issue with them... almost everyone has part of their arse cheeks out in swimwear, unless they are wearing the modesty suits.

I don't wear thong swimwear but thong underwear is much more comfortable than regular big pants... I can always feel the material sat on my cheeks and it feels very weird... but I have been wearing thongs for about 30 years so it's what you get used to I suppose!

Genuine question - if you are wearing a dress/skirt/trousers then do you not have material touching your butt cheeks?

It's a very interesting topic.
If its just bums and skin like any other area and potentially more comfortable. Should we encourage/be comfortable with children wearing thongs? And all ages/ genders?

Quite, if there's nothing remotely sexual about walking around with your arse hanging out, should we let our children wear them?

I'm very happy to have just gotten this advert when looking at this thread!

I blame Love Island and similar dross.

I had the misfortune of having to queue behind a young woman in one of these to get onto a water slide. It was not a fun 20 mins as the angle of the stairs and me being on the step or two below was revealing and not on a good way.

This would be funny if it wasn't so disgusting. Keep your bare bums out of people's faces when they are on water slide steps, simple. I've been there too & hated it.

What are you on about glued to my sunbed? Also, my bum crack isn't out. Neither is my vuvla. There's actually quite a substantial amount of material at the back, it is much wider than a thong underwear. The front is as covered as a normal swimsuit, just slightly higher at the top of my leg which is what I find most comfortable about them (I don't care if you don't believe what I feel comfortable in on MY body!).

Sounds like you're not wearing a thong swimming costume then, they absolutely involve your bum crack being out.

Juliagreeneyes · 26/01/2025 21:20

Right - but even if you’re walking 7 steps to the pool in one, you’re kidding yourself if you think it’s normal swimwear.

The model’s bum looks great in her Tanis Micro Thong Bikini Bottoms in my post upthread - IF you’re admiring its adult qualities. (I’m bi, happy to admire an attractive female arse every so often.) Lounging by the pool at Nikki Beach for an adult audience, fine. But I don’t particularly want my 12 y o DD to think that porn outfits or exposing the arse as a sexualised body part are normal at the municipal baths, or at family swimming time at a mid-range hotel in the Midlands, thanks very much. Because, let’s not kid ourselves, all of these bikinis are about sexualising the arse for people to look at. They aren’t sports swimwear.

cadburyegg · 26/01/2025 21:17

I don't usually pay any attention to what people wear but I think it's grim too. I took a video of my 9 year old body boarding in the sea last summer (it was a busy beach at the peak of the summer holidays) and accidentally got a lady in the shot wearing this type of attire. So every time I look at the video I see her arse. Lovely.

There's a reason that we teach children that bums are private areas and it's rather confusing saying that to them when you've got people in pools and on family beaches showing theirs in full view.

I am a member at David Lloyd, just had a new spa retreat open. Some of the women wear the most hideous costumes, tiny bit of material shoved up their arse and the boobs spilling out everywhere, they look hysterical to me,but of course it gets the attention of men.

The women that wear a one piece time look a million times better.

I joined many years ago,it was Esporta back then and women had to wear a one piece costume.I am old so don’t think my opinion would count for anything!

I'd agree that the thong things are too much (too little?) in a local swimming pool but the ladies aerobics class that precedes my lane swim is full of women in the same dreadful all encompassing black one piece. To me they look so bland and frumpy. Why no colour? Why all so uniformly bland?

Yes the ones we are talking about are the string thongs and not the small brief types. There is a world of difference. They look so sore.

They aren't

Anyone putting children in thongs needs investigating.

You presume I wear thong bikinis? No, I don't, but I have zero issue with people who do. When I'm at the pool, I'm supervising my DC, swimming, and minding my own business. Unlike you, who is apparently occupied with staring at the arses of strangers.

You presume i hang out at swimming pools staring at ladies arses? No i don't - but my point still stands, who ever's arse we are talking about

Juliagreeneyes · 26/01/2025 21:12

Feel free to search “thong bikini U.K.” if you want to obtain one, @1234jump – they are all rather cheap on sale right now 😆
