To not be fussed about shaven legs and swimming

In my mid 40s I have lost the urge to remove body hair much, particularly in winter. If anything I find it’s better for my skin, no rashes or bumps under my arms, less sweating under my arms. Easier with sensitive skin.

I kind of presumed that no one cares that much- I certainly don’t care if other people have a preference to wax completely or not shave at all.

I went swimming with an acquaintance and she seemed shocked, a bit horrified even, at my legs. I stated I am comfortable, made a light joke my husband is supportive. But she brought it up again like it’s a big deal. ‘Especially as you are so fair skinned with black hair’ was her last comment (I am, not particularly super hair, average but with black hair).

Are other women actually bothered about shaving when it comes to others? Do you notice? I don’t in the pool! Obviously we all have our personal preferences for our own bodies, but does this for extend to being in anyway affronted by what another woman does. She stated hers is the typical view, but I may have more ‘European’ standards.

For context, if anyone askes, I’m quite average in most ways. Healthy weight, clean hair and clothing etc.

yanbu- I’m not really that bothered about what others do, as long as I can exercise my own personal freedom without comment

yabu- I think it’s a bit yucky on others and I do judge natural body hair in the pool

You can bet your life men aren’t having these conversations about their peers.

Your body your choice! The extreme expectations placed on women, and policed by women, are the reason women’s lives and appearance are deemed public property — which they are not.

You don’t need to groom, dress or smile for anyone else.

Why? Can you explain what business it is of yours.

Personally I can’t be bothered to be offended by whether someone who is not related to me shaves or not.

I do hope you wouldn’t be too upset if told to fuck off with your opinion and I would drop you like a stone. I certainly hope you are perfect in every way to judge friends to that extent.

Why would you be bothered if someone related to you shaves. Why would you care

JoBrandsCleaner · 27/01/2025 19:17

I go swimming every day and I keep everything shaved all the time, I wouldn’t really notice though if I saw a woman with hairy legs and arm pits. That’s not because I’m a nice un judgey person either because I notice other things and think yuk 😄

I have an old braun silk-epil which has a shaver. I don’t understand how it works though. Do you just push the foil head (second photo down on the left) into the skin? Wet or dry? I seem to recall trying it in the shower but it didn’t do anything.

Edited

I can see the confusion, looking at the picture, as it looks like a wet razor attachment. As you used it in the shower, I am guessing you didn't switch it on. If it's an electric attachment, it's designed to be used dry with battery power. It won't do anything if you use it like a wet razor, you need to use it like an electric shaver.

JayJayj · 27/01/2025 19:01

I take my daughter swimming every week and I do not shave for it. If I am hairy I’m hairy. If I happened to have shaved great! My hair is so dark and grows back quickly. If I shave too regularly it causes ingrown hairs and issues so I don’t bother.

SimplyAFolly · 27/01/2025 19:00

No problem whatsoever, I don't understand why women are pressured to be clean of body hair all over.
Natural is best and if your happy then its a plus?

Differentstarts · 26/01/2025 16:24

Sorry im going to be that person i wouldn't do it and I would say something to the person I'm with, purely because I'd be quite shocked but shaving to me is like brushing your teeth or flushing the toilet it's just something you do

Should everyone shave their heads before swimming if this is the case? 😂

You are Duncan Goodhew and I claim my £5.

WonkyBananas · 27/01/2025 18:47

I've not shaved leg hair for years (okay I am 64). It's never been particularly noticeable unlike my arm hair but I rarely shave that either.

I think we spend too much time pandering to the patriarchy's idea of what a woman should be.

Don't agree with high heel thing either

I don't wear make up or high heels and I don't carry a handbag. I also only shave my legs in summer. So I'm obviously a man. Thanks for letting me know.

I do notice - yes. But I think good on her! Wish I had the guts

You just need the confidence to reject the patriarchy. I hope all the posts on this thread help you to find it. 💐

StrikeForever · 27/01/2025 17:58

I’m pleased to read of this mindset in the 40s. I only got there within the past year at 65. My somewhat hairy legs are no one else’s business. I’m going to Tenerife on Friday. I will shave them before going there because I will be happier with smooth legs in the sunshine, but I won’t be taking a shaver with me for the little hairs coming through though. Going swimming and wearing shorts at home though, nah!

Your friend’s ‘horror’ is her issue. Maybe she will learn to accept a/her body being natural eventually. Maybe thinking about your stance will help her on her way!

I've never noticed others' leg hair (or not) when swimming or at classes.

Once, many years ago I noticed a woman with longer, natural underarm hair in the showers. I remember it because it was relatively unusual, but actually it looked a lot softer and nicer than I thought it would be.

I few years ago I managed a winter without having to expose my arm pits and let it grow, and I preferred it. It was less sweaty as the hair did it's natural job of wicking sweat off the arm pit. If society dropped the expectatation of women to be body-hairless, I'd happily embrace it.

I wish there was a campaign to accept or even embrace our natural bodily features. Hair isn't dirty or stinky.

I did something very similar one winter and have only shaved them on a few occasions since (always regretted it and let it regrow). It really feels much nicer.

I’ e seen a few comments about shaving arms here. I have hairy arms but I have never shaved them. The hair is a different texture to leg hair, more downy - but even if it wasn’t, why does it matter?

I did this a few times as a teenager, after a couple of comments - I thought it was the norm for a while. Then I realised that most people didn't actually shave their arms - my hair was just darker and more noticeable.

Mittens67 · 27/01/2025 11:25

In a minute way this reminds me of the women who work for the “morality police” under misogynistic islamic regimes, although of course those women may well be under fear of violence if they don’t take part.
It is a sad state of affairs that even women here feel the need to remind other women on grooming procedures which generally arise from making us more appealing to the male gaze.

YOU are "society" You don't need a campaign, just do what you want.

I'm a regular swimmer. The only thing I pay attention to is whether or not someone is being a knob in the lanes.

Ratisshortforratthew · 26/01/2025 21:22

It’s a completely arbitrary construction though that “femininity” equates to hairlessness. Literally completely made up (by male ad execs). Why do you think women with body hair aren’t feminine? What even is feminine? The status of being female, or some made up aesthetic rules? If you’re talking about the latter, not everyone wants that anyway.

I don’t know if it’s been proven but I was once told that removing hair became popular as some men liked the pre puberty body of girls…..knowing this makes me feel a bit 🤢

I think if I wad with a good friend and she had dark hairy legs and pubes popping out I'd probably be intrigued enough to ask why. Not in a judge way, just curious as to the reasoning.
It's seems that alot of women in this thread object to shaving just because 'men don't have to' ... I mean, i get equality and patriarchy, misogyny etc but so many seem to want to throw feeling feminine out of the window just to prove a point. I shave all year round and wouldn't dream of going to the pool with hairy legs. I wouldn't judge anyone that did.... mind you, when my waters broke I ran a bath and had a full shave so as not to have to give birth with hairy legs .....

I don't feel any less feminine with body hair. it doesn't make me look or feel like a man.
women grow hair on their bodies, so why would it be unfeminine?

LizzieW1969 · 26/01/2025 23:41

I’ve taken up swimming regularly at a health club, so I’m now shaving my legs very carefully, as well as my other bits. Because I have very dark hairs and I can’t bear the idea of other people seeing them!

I know it shouldn’t matter and I don’t care what other people do! I quite admire people who are not bothered by what other people think.

Ultimately, it’s just a cultural thing anyway!

Pumpkincozynights · 26/01/2025 22:11

I couldn’t care less to be honest.
