To think that wolf whistling wasn't such a bad thing?

NovemberMorn · 26/01/2025 13:41

Joanna Lumley has just given an interview in which she says..."I never minded wolf whistling, I always thought it was tremendous".

She also said... "I think we were a little bit tougher then. Somebody put their hand on your leg, you didn’t feel affronted and report it. You’d give them a slap.”

Do you think she is right?

No i didn't say that. Men of all ages do it, in fact in my experience it's older mem that are more likely to ww.. I'm not talking about bowing down to anyone. I'm just asking why people are unable to accept that women are allowed to have different opinions and experiences? The response to that is shouting down posters they don't agree with whilst ranting about children being targeted that many people have never witnessed.

Could you please quote where someone has said that women who enjoy having strange men make weird noises at them are not allowed to have different opinions and experiences?

Could you also please directly quote people shouting down posters they don't agree with whilst ranting about children being targeted.

Thanks.

This started as a women who complained were not tough enough! Are we all to bow down to that then?

Were you the poster who said it was only men on their 20s that did it? Can you prove that?

You are right.
The discussion has got out of hand, changing words to suit their own agenda, trying (and failing) to browbeat others with a different opinion.
Sad, because before the harridans got too excited, it was interesting.

Let them get on with it...there are now more interesting threads to join. x

Again, I changed no words, I summarised that you said that women and children are weak if they hate street harassment and then quoted you saying women and girls.

Girls are children, so nothing has been changed. While your words quoted back to you are indeed embarrassing, so is your continued attempt to rewrite the thread.

Thank you for calling women and children who have experienced street harassment and been upset by it harridans.

It shows perfectly who you are.

meh2025 · 29/01/2025 14:16

meh2025 · 29/01/2025 13:27

Nah. Completely factual based on your original post and your subsequent words.

"think we were a little bit tougher then. Somebody put their hand on your leg, you didn’t feel affronted and report it. You’d give them a slap.” quoting ms Lumley.

And from you: :I agree with you ...and Joanna too."

And from you: "I personally think some women overact. A wolf whistle never harmed anyone, unless the bloke whistling was so distracted he fell of the ladder."

And from you: "As has been said...women and girls handled themselves back then. I never saw myself as a victim even though I grew up in that era."

And from you: "You can call it victim blaming if you like, I see it more as educating women to look after themselves...
I am talking of women being street smart enough to NOT get the vapours if a man dare look at them in an appreciative way, or God forbid....actually whistle.😁

And that's only on page one of your responses.

No need to blatantly lie.

Let'ss take it back to the start. The OP asked if street harassment was ok, and for some odd reason quoted Ms Lumley, and implied that women and children who hated steet hararssment were weak.

She has spent the rest of the thread arguing with anybody who disagreed with her.

And then there are the posters who seem determined to claim that they are not allowed to enjoy strange men making weird noises at them, or not to be bothered by strange men making weird noises at them.

Except I haven't seen anyone saying you cannot enjoy street harassment if that floats your boat, or find it insignifcant if that's your point of view. Maybe I missed that, but all I have seen is women saying no, they hated it and refusing to be silenced on that.

So, to sum up, the OP has had her question answered in full and robustly, and the answer is No, most of us do not think street harassment is ok and no we are not weak for hating street harassment.

Basically, Op it's turned into a pile on against the people who didn't mind the occasional ww and have also never witnessed children being targeted, but these posters with there constant reference to, "street harassment" claim it is true. They then say they have proof. They don't because where is the proof? We believe them anyway but in return they call women who didn't mind the ww's, weak with low seld esteem and resort to saying that they weren't as great as they think they were! I would give up Op, I am too as these vitriolic, angry, angry posters cannot and will not accept that other people have experiences that don't mirror theirs .

Nope. Nobody has said, to my knowledge that if you enjoyed strange men making weird noises at you, or chose to ignore strange men making weird noises at you, or that it didn't happen to you at all that was a problem. Good for you.

But women who have found street harassment offensive, disgusting or upsetting simply won't be bullied into silence.

It has never crossed my mind that it would be right for children to be subjected to harassment in the street.
The word 'girls' is often used to describe young women....which is what we were discussing at the time.
Sad that you interpret my meaning as to be such, and deliberately change the word to CHILDREN, to suit your own agenda.
You are obviously desperate to point score, but try not to sink to such depths.

I think that builders put on a site next to an all girls (yes that’s how they are referred to) would street harass them.

The girls attending those schools are children.

No, I didn't interpret anything. Girls are children, that's just a fact.

I can understand you being embarrassed by your own words quoted at you and desperate to score points, but you said what you said and there's nothing to be done about that.

My only agenda is not to allow anyone to minimise how distressing street harassment is to many.

Yours appears to be to try to bully anyone who disagrees with you into silence no matter how many facts are presented to you.

Odd.

@aliceinawonderland

You do know that there are plenty of school in the City of London. One of the schools is even called City of London Girls! 😂 They commute in trains get out near Liverpool street etc. Do you really think City of London doesn’t have under 18’s walking about at all?

Nonaynevernomore · 29/01/2025 14:04

aliceinawonderland · 29/01/2025 13:43

I want you to retract your comment that I am excusing men who harass children

Then I'll leave

Is this aimed at me?

if it is I won’t retract it, sorry but the defense that these builders didn’t do it, because no children happened to be around is not a decent defense.

Put them on a building site next to an all girls (yes girls as in female children) and if the don’t do it then, I’ll accept it. But the chances are they would, because they felt they were entitled too.

So yep, you did indeed imply that women and girls (another word for whom is children) who loathed street harassment are weak.

And no, I did NOT quote you as having said children. I summarised that you had implied that women and children were weak and QUOTED you as saying girls. Who are, in fact, children.

You're embarrassing yourself a lot now. You said it. It's done.

It was however accepted at some level, these men meant “nothing by it”, and people like yourself felt women and girls should handled themselves in a way so as not to stop the men, not that the men should not do it!! Sorry but that’s not acceptable.

I think PP is making the point that you can't prove these men never harass children when your only experience of them is in an environment where there were no children for them to harass.

And that it's impossible to know the age of every young woman walking by (who are often seen at a distance with their faces turned away) so when they are working on sites where underage girls do walk past, there's a high chance that some of these girls will be on the receiving end of their harassment.

Unless you think 'your' builders only ever worked in environments where every woman was over 18, or where every woman had maturity signifiers such as a briefcase, then you can't possibly say 'your' builders 'never' harassed children. If they are habitual street harassers, the chances of them, even inadvertently to put the best spin on it, targetting an underage woman will be pretty high.

Great post!

Exactly what I’m saying.

aliceinawonderland · 29/01/2025 13:41

Nonaynevernomore you asked

so again I’ll ask, how do they ID these 18 year old? Passport? Driving license?
Yeah, they don’t! They’ve no idea how old they are.

aliceinawonderland · Yesterday 13:46

City of london
all office blocks ( some under construction hence builders) and no schools in vicinity
women in power suits carrying briefcases
get the scene?

Nonaynevernomore
oh I see no children around for them to street harass, so they didn’t!
Slow hand clap for them….. aren’t they just great.
But you keep trying to say they did it as a choice.

They street harassed what was available to them ……
You’ve really not proved a point here at all!

Basically you are putting your own words into my mouth!!
Beggars belief

Thanks for bringing all those to the fore, it proves my point further!

I doubt they will retract what they have said, I have been accused of saying children are weak if they are upset by men cat calling them...an utter lie.

I think my involvement here is finished here too...an interesting thread sullied by people who will say anything to score a point.

I certainly didn't put a slant on anything. I just quoted you.

And yep, you did indeed imply (I said imply not said and you should only use the words I used as I have done for you when I quoted you directly) that women and children are weak if they dislike street harassment.

As you are aware, girls, as you specifically mentioned in one of your replies, are indeed children.

If you don't want your words to be quoted at you correctly, don't write them.
