To think that wolf whistling wasn't such a bad thing?

NovemberMorn · 26/01/2025 13:41

Joanna Lumley has just given an interview in which she says..."I never minded wolf whistling, I always thought it was tremendous".

She also said... "I think we were a little bit tougher then. Somebody put their hand on your leg, you didn’t feel affronted and report it. You’d give them a slap.”

Do you think she is right?

Genuinely, do you think this is harmless? Do you think she should experience this and not complain but 'move on' without giving it a second thought.
Do you think she should feel complimented by their attention?

Yep, and this is totally normal and standard behaviour in all cities, predatory men predating on women is the standard everywhere.

But like I said all the way through, if these women enjoy creepy strange men making weird noises at them in public, they can do that.

What they cannot get away with doing is minimising the degradation and fear for other women and children. And that's really what the arguments are about.

One the one hand, manpandering handmaidens, on the other women who care about women and children. And never the twain shall meet.

Went and stayed in London with my cousin last year and couldn't believe the way noone interacted like that, I couldn't live like that, I like chatting and listening to people x

Apologies only seeing this now as I had stopped watching, yes saw that video a few years ago, horrific, I'd say it's 10 times worse over there now, I was so lucky growing up in the 80s and 90s in Ireland, and tbh I am so grateful we live in Dublin, majority of dubliners are so friendly, no harresment, or threatending behaviour, you can't sit on the luas without someone sitting beside you and giving you their life stories and even food shopping and you end up striking up a conversation about which meat is the best. We live in an estate half hour from the city centre, my kids know everyone and always chatting away and I'm aware on how lucky wr are and yes, feel totally sorry for people that don't get to experience that x

Yep, it's less accepted now, but still prevalent. I added a video earlier of a woman being street harassed in NY. The scariest part of it was that it was absolutely what I expected to see and tallies up with my own memories of being younger in any city I was in. It's ten years old but I doubt much has changed.

I've seen the video before and like you found it the least surprising thing I've ever watched. I honestly can't understand any woman looking at it and thinking that kind of behaviour, on any level, is ok.

The lyrics to the song Really Saying Something covered by Bananarama, sound a bit dodgy now😳

I scrolled back because wanted to see where she said that and all I can see is tinman something commenting, can't see anywhere that novembermom mentioned children. That is the last thing now I'm going to say, and reason I'm saying it is because you'll love to think I scurried off, goodbye to the 2 of you because there seems to be just the 2 of you constantly posting. Take care and have a lovely evening xx

Ooh you are funny. You didn't need to scroll back, I screenshot it and tagged you. And you replied and acknowledged it, but (wrongly) thought OP wasn't @NovemberMorn despite that being her username throughout the entire thread and her being quoted multiple times.

You accused people of lying when they didn't. The mature thing to do would be to say oops I made a mistake, sorry.

Bizarre for an adult on an anonymous forum to prefer running away instead of just saying you got it wrong. Genuinely very odd!

Once again, the OP said "girls" and girls means children.

You now know that as well as saying girls the OP was responding directly to a comment about a 14 year old child being street harassed and that therefore as well as the reality that girls means children, she did in fact mean a 14 year old child when she said "girls" in that reply.

It's very odd that you are constantly posting and then accusing people who are replying to you of constantly posting.

Isn't this like the 20th time you've said you're leaving? It's not an airport, no need to announce your departure.

If you're planning to stick around sticking to facts would be great though 👌

You were wrong though.

Novembermorn is the OP!

And it didn't take long to 'scroll back' because I just did 'see all' on OP's posts and it was a pretty early one. OP aka @NovemberMorn!

Novembermorn is the OP...

Glad you can agree you were wrong.

Hopefully you'll apologise to the poster you accused of twisting words.

Not much chance, I should say, she's been insulting me for hours now, promising to leave then returning and has worked herself up a fair bit.

Anyway this is far better than any apology, I admit I like being proven right when I know I am right, and didn't even think about a screenshot.

Oh dearie dearie me. Novembermorn is the one who said women and girls handled themselves back then.

And she did so directly in response to someone talking about a 14 year old child being street harassed.

You are so pathetic. I almost anticipated your response word for word. The responses are there but we all know you're both a liar and you twist words. You are making yourself sound ridiculous, don't be an idiot, the responses are there in black and white. I don't "make things up", I'm not embarrassed because I've done nothing wrong. You meanwhile, ought to be extremely embarrassed for your lies. Don't waste your time replying because this time, I really am leaving.

Nope, stated simple black and white facts. No idea why that has triggered you so badly, but do feel free to leave as you have nothing to add :)

PerambulationFrustration · 29/01/2025 15:22

I used to get wolf whistled at 16 and I felt so embarrassed and anxious. It was often followed by some verbal harassment.
I've also had lots of harassment out in public and at work.
Im pretty tough and resilient and always have been but when you're young, it's not easy. Especially if it's men at work.
I'm glad it's not acceptable. I'd hate my Dd , or any young woman, to have to go through all that.

ElsaGreen · 29/01/2025 15:22

I think she has no idea.

Few modern women would feel safe giving a man 'a slap'...we know we will likely get a jawbreaking punch (or worse) in return.

I actually think that men feel more entitled to hit women than in the past.

OP's post saying "As has been said...women and girls handled themselves back then" was literally in direct response to a story about 14 year old children being wolf whistled

Here's a screenshot.

You still don't think her comment about 'girls' was about children? It's in direct response to a post about 14 year old girls...

I'm sure you'll suddenly say you're leaving the thread because you were wrong but it would be refreshing for you to acknowledge you made a mistake.

Interesting how the posters who claim women (and girls) were tougher in times gone by and are too over sensitive now are seemingly so sensitive themselves on this thread, isn't it?

whathaveiforgotten · 29/01/2025 15:06

@NovemberMorn

No mention of CHILDREN, but by all means read through every post I have made to double check.

Here you go:

"As has been said...women and girls handled themselves back then."

Girls are children. So you absolutely did mention them in that context.
