To think that wolf whistling wasn't such a bad thing?

Joanna Lumley has just given an interview in which she says..."I never minded wolf whistling, I always thought it was tremendous".

She also said... "I think we were a little bit tougher then. Somebody put their hand on your leg, you didn’t feel affronted and report it. You’d give them a slap.”

Do you think she is right?

She was also extremely good in Fool me once, she is a very popular actress, presenter and personality, and has been for decades.

She was, as was Michelle Keegan, if people haven't seen the series, I highly recommend it.

And the £20 notes bits

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 26/02/2025 09:14

Look

its perfectly possible for some posters to think that JL is a fabulous actress and is spot on with her comments

or that she is a fabulous actress and that her comments are wrong

or you like her in stuff you’ve seen but wouldn’t go out of your way to watch her and think her comments are wrong/right

or that shes an awful actress and shes wrong/right

everyone is entitled to their opinion on both her acting and her comments, noone who thinks she is a bad actress and wrong is going to change their mind because she is on a tv show they may not have watched

i really feel you think this is some sort of gotcha…..it isn’t

and i am sure Joanna Lumley isn’t reading this but if she is

you were great in Amandaland, loved the delivery of just about every line but especially the ‘londis’ one 😀 and your face when you sell the focus horse

If actors wish to be judged only on the quality of their performances, it would seem sensible to avoid airing controversial views. JL is no more qualified to pontificate about the supposed lack of resilience of other woman because she gave a good performance in a recent show.

You miss the point.
She was said (on here) to be past it, desperate for attention, she was only a model and third rate actress anyway (I am paraphrasing)
I think she has proven that she is indeed still very current, no matter her views.

Just popped back to add to this.
All the posters who wrote Joanna Lumley off as a 'has been', saying her opinions don't matter, she is long past it, etc...confusing her personal comments with her rather extensive work history, both past and present.

Wasn't she just fabulous in Amandaland?😏

And i still don’t think she right…

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 25/02/2025 17:12

Yes, as an actress she acted well in Amandaland

yay!?

PinkArt · 25/02/2025 13:10

She was great in Amandaland, which makes her comments all the more disappointing.

Lumley is just coming out with a lot of barshit things at the moment to shill that Amandaland. What's the other thing she said recently to grab some column inches, that women are jealous of their daughters? 🙄

Agreed. I know there is a school of thought that believes that any celebrity with a posh accent must invariably be clever; but JL's comments reveal her to be spectacularly stupid and tone deaf. In a time when we have epidemic levels of violence against women and girls, she should be ashamed of having used her profile to spout this.

Personally, after years of being harassed - and worse - by men, I know I never found it a complement. It was offensive and intimidating, and usually intended as such. The single best thing for me about getting older - by a long long way - is that I am not subjected to nearly as much harassment by men. Is that not a sad thing for me to have to say?

It's also interesting that Lumley was a model, and it's well known that models had to put up with a great deal of harassment in the industry. If she really escaped it with little more than a hand on her knee, she should count herself lucky.

I’m not sure why any of us care what Joanna Lumley thinks anyway. She’s not someone whose opinion I usually take notice of!

Reading through the posts on here, It's ironic that a thread about harassment, you have continuously harassed other posters.

To the poster who posted the video above, no one should have to put up with that sort of harassment.
The topic was originally about wolf whistling, those men were up close to the woman, intimidating her and Verbally insulting her.
Disgusting behaviour.

The topic was about wolf whistling and inappropriate touch and slapping a man. You can’t get more up close than that,
The video also does show some men ‘just complimenting’ her. It’s all creepy.

How is wolf whistling any different to comments (or cat calling or insults or following women) though? They're all predatory, objectifying, harassing behaviors done by men at women, in public spaces, to intimate them.

As a northerner, being friendly to randoms is fine. Being harassed on the street is not.

And it is still so prevalent. It's just so sad. I am glad that least it is no longer acceptable, most decent people agree that street harassment is awful, predatory and very frightening behaviour for most women and children.

Historically, of course, women always hated street harassment, but there are always a few women who love men's attention and a male cookie more than they care about the fears of women and children.

Up to them if they enjoy that kind of creepy attention, but not at all up to them to minimise it for others.

I just wish it would die out altogether, but sadly we are not near that yet.

I think it has been said throughout the thread, some women were not bothered by the odd wolf whistle, it was not threatening to them, it wasn't important.
Other women found it intimidating, so it's a good thing that on the whole, men have stopped it.
People see things diffently, depending on their own experiences.

It's absolutely normal for predatory men to target children and teenagers. Everyone knows this, not sure why anyone on this thread is pretending not to know this.

2015 USA study showed 85% of girls experience street harassment before age 17 https://www.ilr.cornell.edu/news/faculty/street-harassment-statistics

Research shows that 35% of girls wearing school uniforms have been sexually harassed in public spaces in the United Kingdom

https://findanexpert.unimelb.edu.au/news/63332-'i-started-walking-the-long-way'many-young-women-first-experience-street-harassment-in-their-school-uniforms

Some UK school girls hated it so much and were so distressed by it they wanted it to be made illegal

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/street-harassment-girls-crime-debate-parliament-house-of-lords-plan-international-uk-a8664381.html

According to this source 97 percent of women have experienced street harassment.

https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/news/misogyny-research-pioneers-hail-new-police-action-to-record-harassment-of-women

So, back to the original question.

If you enjoyed street harassment, I think you are extremely weird, since having strange creepy men making noises at you is at best very unsettling to me. I always loathed it, found it embarrassing, disgusting and distressing.

However, you can continue to enjoy having creepy, weird men making noises at you if you wish.

What you cannot do is pretend that all women agree with you that it's a bit of a larf when strange predatory men make noises at women as they try to simply exist and go about their lives.

And you cannot pretend that this was ever the case at any time in history as comon sense as well as documented history proves that women always loathed street harassment.

Sadly, for as long as women have been begging for men to simply leave them alone and stop harrassing them, let them exist and go about their day in safety and peace, there have been people trying to pretend it's normal and stick up for these men.

"In 1887, after covering the issue of harassment for some time, the Pall Mall Gazette ran a column of responses entitled “What the ‘Male Pests’ Have to Say for Themselves.” Some insisted on their freedom to follow and speak to women. As one wrote, unless England were to follow the practice of “locking up women as they do in the East, there is nothing [left] but to leave men perfectly free to gaze at and even follow women as they please.” Others criticized the “respectable” women who wrote in for assuming that no morally upright woman would want to be “spoken to”—with at least one suggesting that they were misunderstanding courtship practices among working-class men and women who hold their “evening parties in the street.”

https://daily.jstor.org/street-harassment-in-victorian-london/

All this information is widely available, but more than that we all know it anyway, even the ones pretending not to.

In conclusion, perhaps "you" enjoy street harassment.

Many, clearly, do not.

Final reminder, it's absolutely normal for predator men to target children and teenagers and is a well documented and historical problem.

Saphire123 · 01/02/2025 00:31

meh2025 · 01/02/2025 00:16

Yep, and this is totally normal and standard behaviour in all cities, predatory men predating on women is the standard everywhere.

But like I said all the way through, if these women enjoy creepy strange men making weird noises at them in public, they can do that.

What they cannot get away with doing is minimising the degradation and fear for other women and children. And that's really what the arguments are about.

One the one hand, manpandering handmaidens, on the other women who care about women and children. And never the twain shall meet.
