https://www.secularism.org.uk/news/2025/01/judge-and-parents-call-for-boys-to-be-protected-from-circumcision

Article describes an upsetting case of two doctors performing these ops without anesthesia, and with sometimes serious side effects. One boy nearly died.

The National Secular Society is running a concurrent campaign to ban all 'religious cutting' - that includes both FGM and male circumcision. I wholeheartedly agree that no baby or child should suffer in this way. More info:

https://www.secularism.org.uk/religious-surgery/

YABU - circumcision for religous reasons is fine
YANBU - circumcision should be banned (unless there is a medical reason)

I was circumcised within days of being born. Our family doctor was adamant that the foreskin served no useful purpose, and increased the possibility of infection.
In later years, I was happy with having been circumcised and always flinched at the idea of a penis that was "uncut."
I will have to reread this thread to see if there are posts from women who express any preference either way in respect of partners

It's pretty gross that the thing that occurs to you on a thread about the mutilation of infants is whether or not women might want to touch your dick ffs.

Icanttakethisanymore · 24/01/2025 15:12

In what way do you consider them different?

FGM frequently causes long-lasting problems with bleeding, pain, urinary problems and loss of sexual pleasure.
Circumcision doesn’t.

As someone whose child has to undergo potentially life saving surgery when very young, I really struggle with this unnecessary mutilation of a perfect newborn/infant. I will never forget my eldest needing a cannula put in his hand as a newborn: that was horrendous enough to put him thorough although, again, medically necessary.

Feel you on that. They couldn't get a cannula in DS's hand so he had one in his foot and a feeding tube because he wasn't eating. They took him off to the SCBU when he was two days old. He's alright now but that was tough and I was so scared for my little boy.

shuggles · 24/01/2025 17:35

@AliasGrace47 I read in a Gloria Steinem book that circumcision can increase sensitivity by exposing more of the sensitive area.

It sounds like you and Gloria Steinem both have very limited knowledge of male anatomy.

speakout · 24/01/2025 17:34

I agree it should be criminalised.

My DD is a paediatric nurse, circumcision is performed and paid for by NHS.

Religion is responsible for so many hideous acts.

shuggles · 24/01/2025 17:34

@MrsPeregrine By that reasoning then let’s also ban ear piercing on babies and young children then

Well yes, lots of people would support that ban because a child can't consent to a piercing. It makes no sense to subject a child to potential risks for no benefit.

And it’s much easier to keep clean down there because there’s less area for bacteria to accumulate and multiply.

Penis is literally the easiest part of the body to clean because of where it is positioned.

From that comment, it looks like you don't think too highly of men's ability to keep themselves clean, and it would also make me question how the men in your life are able to clean the parts of their body which are much more challenging to clean.

I read in a Gloria Steinem book that circumcision can increase sensitivity by exposing more of the sensitive area. She overall stated that, while not comparable to FGM, it's mainly an act of submission to a patriarchal God. I think I agree- but does anyone agree about the possible increased sensation? I stil think any benefits are not worth infant circumcision.

It's the opposite. It decreases sensitivity, like walking barefoot toughens up your feet.

Zebedee999 · 24/01/2025 17:32

The thread developed and has covered male and female circumcision as well as the rights of the child.
Childish to suggest my not wanting FGM in this country is xenophobic. It's done to 100% of girls in large parts of the world and done in the UK now too despite it being illegal. Such is the problem there is even a court set up to handle FGM cases. Why you consider it xenophobic NOT to want this practice in the UK is beyond me, I don't want it here. What's your reason for not being bothered by it?

Well you couldn't read a graph title properly, I obviously couldn't assume you had anything close to an educated opinion.

SapphireSeptember · 24/01/2025 17:33

MidnightMusing5 · 24/01/2025 16:54

educate yourself. Circumcision is scientifically proven to be a hygiene/ health benefit. FGM has no health benefit and in fact, as the name suggests - is mutilation. FGM is banned, and rightly so.

so we have two dodgy individuals breaking the law, and so now we ban circumcision??

A dodgy builder built a death trap of a house. We should now ban all builders from ever building a house.

give me strength!

And how many baby boys have to die before enough is enough? One is too many in my book. If someone said I had to allow someone to cut off my DS's foreskin without anesthetic I wouldn't be responsible for my actions. My little boy is perfectly clean, I make sure of it! He was born with a hydrocele and even then they rarely operate on those.

It became popular in (puritanical) America for the same reason it became popular in religions: because it makes masturbation less fun. Everything else is post hoc justification and not based in science.

I've heard Muslims trying to claim that eating pork is intrinsically harmful to the human body in a way that eating beef isn't (as opposed to potentially poisonous because pigs are not very clean), and I would not be at all surprised to find that some highly orthodox rabbi has a video demonstrating that if you cook veal in a cream sauce it transmogrifies into plutonium or something.

Momsnetmeanies · 24/01/2025 17:29

MrsPeregrine · 24/01/2025 17:14

Circumcision offers benefits of easier cleanliness though and can avoid issues of the foreskin becoming too tight. FGM offers no benefit whatsoever…

Whataboutery at its finest!!!

Cutting the end of baby dicks off is never ok (sometimes without anaesthetic)

FGM is abhorrent too which is the worse mutilation is an argument no one wants to win

If you think either is ok, you are a horrible human!

That graphic is shocking. 100% FGM in many African countries. Whilst FGM is illegal in the UK we now have a court dedicated to FGM cases as it happens here albeit hushed up of course.
We need to stop migration from these places, FGM has no place in the UK. The law matters nothing to these people who want to practice their culture.

That is about male circumcision, not FGM. Read properly before spouting xenophobic nonsense.

FindusMakesPancakes · 24/01/2025 17:27

It should absolutely be banned. My father had both of my brothers cut against mother's wishes. Over 50 years later, they still live with the consequences.

It is an abhorrent practice.

Circumcision leads to potentially permanent adjustment or pain thresholds, so those individuals will always find things more painful than uncut men.

As for HIV prevention, there are other methods than mutilating babies to prevent it.

shuggles · 24/01/2025 17:27

@knitnerd90 The history of circumcision bans has a lot of antisemitism and today Islamophobia.

Not everything you dislike is due to "antisemitism."

AliasGrace47 · 24/01/2025 17:27

Sceptical123 · 24/01/2025 17:17

Would you say this regarding FGM though?

I think involuntary (as in parents deciding for their children) male circumcision is as barbaric as female - men can lose sensation and it affects their sex life and can provoke profound mental health issues for assorted reasons. There was an article about a man who committed suicide due to the impact it had had on him a few years ago and more should be publicly discussed about it.

It’s ridiculous that this subject seems taboo or out of bounds just bc it is practised by non-Christian religions. Also the inhumane way animals are butchered in the name of some religions is just as vile. What about child brides? Should they be allowed again? Thats finally being stamped out, and they’re now discussing in hushed tones the matter of banning cousin marriage due to the horrendous impact it has on the children involved with numerous birth defects etc.

Why is C of E allowed to be openly mocked in the media, and in society in general, but the gross customs of others tolerated and worse still protected? Anyone?

It's not that simple. Protestants are not normally persecuted in the UK. They don't tend to belong to different ethnic groups that face prejudice, as Jews & Muslims do. I agree these practices need to be criticised, & as agnostic former Christian I don't like mockery of Christians either. Otoh the C of E deserves the flack, Welby is a disgrace. Criticising an institution is different from criticising adherent in general imo.

Lavenderflower · 24/01/2025 17:25

I don't with either male or female circumcision - whilst I male circumcision may be harmful than female circumcision, it can reduce sensation in later life.

Hohofortherobbers · 24/01/2025 17:25

namechangeGOT · 24/01/2025 16:06

I really don't care who this offends but if you cut your child's foreskin off for religious or cultural reasons or because it's 'the done thing' where you live, then you're a child abuser. Your sons foreskin is not yours to decide what to do with. If your 'god' or 'community' call for you to mutilate your child and you go along with it then you're brain dead.

If your son wants to remove his foreskin when he's 18 to impress his 'god', or because it's the cultural norm then that's up to him. But to do it to an infant with no say is abhorrent.

Well said

GildedRage · 24/01/2025 17:24

@Zebedee999 please note that the WHO recommends adult voluntary circumcision in africa to prevent HIV and other serious sexually transmitted diseases.

Who decides that our moral limits trumps that of others. As I said, the name for that attitude is supremacism

We’re talking about the legalities of it on this thread. Therefore the moral limits of the majority absolutely should trump the “moral limits” of a minority in this county in law. Obviously a very extreme example but that’s like saying because it’s legal to stone women who have committed adultery in other countries and cultures that they can do it here even if it makes us uncomfortable. No murder is illegal in any and all circumstances in this country. Child abuse is also illegal in this country and cutting off bits of a child’s body without anaesthetic with no medical need is child abuse full stop.

AlexisP90 · 24/01/2025 17:23

UninterestingFirstPost · 24/01/2025 14:56

I don’t think parents should be allowed to modify their child’s body for non-medical reasons until the child is old enough to decide. It’s the parents’ religious belief in play, not yet the child’s.
When I first changed my newborn son’s nappy I remember thinking that some parents hand over their perfect baby to have a bit cut off. I can’t imagine being able to do that. (Also, so few people conform with every precept of their religion so it surprises me that they feel entitled to follow this one that alters another person’s body.)

Edited

THIS.

Your child's body, your child's CHOICE.

I have no issue with religious beliefs but you don't get to decide for your children.

Same applies for ear piercing etc. It's not your body

END OF!

Attempting to yoke male circumcision together with FGM is trolling, a bit. The former is a pretty small procedure with trivial hygiene/health benefits and no lifelong downsides. It’s also impractical to outlaw it whilst it remains a religious practice for two major world religions.

Circumcision can lead to sexual dysfunction and always leads to reduced sensation, regardless of what some religions claim. Risk of infection is also significant. I'd call reduced sensation a lifelong downside.

This is both antisemitic and false (and I am both Jewish and live in the USA). The influence of Jews on American circumcision practices is wildly exaggerated. In fact, there was an active effort to keep Jews out of medicine for a kong time, which is why there are so many hospitals in major cities named things like Beth Israel and Mount Sinai. They were founded by Jewish doctors who weren't allowed to practise in the other hospitals.

Even today Jews are less than 2% of the US population.

It was promoted by 19th and early 20th century doctors who weren't Jewish. John Harvey Kellogg (of cornflakes fame) was a Seventh-Day Adventist who promoted circumcision to reduce masturbation.

The history of circumcision bans has a lot of antisemitism and today Islamophobia.

Yes, we must stamp out anti Semitic reasoning. The people on the subreddit told me about Kellogg, & some theorise that the US medical establishment profits from later circumcision issues so wants it to happen. I don't know, but there def are issues w the US healthcare system.
I also lurk on the men's rights reddits to get a sense of antifeminists' arguments to counter them. One rare instance where I agreed w them was when they shut down a subreddit where mothers were posting pics of their sons crying after circumcision & laughing about it! Horrible.
