Was just chatting to a friend about this:

  1. Hearing all the boys in class talking about how a girl’s tampon fell out in the classroom. Lived in fear of this for many years before I realised they meant it fell out of her bag, not her body!

  2. Opening the door of a sauna with my cousin (which was right in the middle of the spa area, so not private) on holiday in a nice hotel and my uncle inside shouting at us to close the door. I cried for weeks thinking I’d inadvertently seen him naked (although I didn’t actually see anything). Couldn’t look at him for years without feeling sick before I was old enough to realise we were just letting the heat out and annoying the other people in there! No one was naked in mixed sauna in the very public pool area of a nice spa hotel full of people!

I once had 2 black eyes within about a month of each other - I was called into the Head Mistresses office to talk about them. It wasn't until years later I realised they thought I was being abused at home. Luckily I was quite proud of getting black eyes playing the woods and I think my general demeanour about it showed they were genuine accidents

I also thought "the black market" was an actual physical market where they sold things like drugs and guns – I remember thinking they did very well to let all the customers know where it was without the police ever finding out!

On the miss pronunciation ones - I remember having a Grand Prix game on my old master system – you can probably imagine how I pronounced that! 😂

Despite being married to an avid F1 fan, in my head I still always read it as “Grand Pricks”

I thought yellow cars were free! 😵‍💫

I thought something along these lines too, they were always talking about guerrilla warfare on tv in the 70s!

I remember a news story about 3 armed guerilla’s and I thought it was about a gorilla with 3 arms!

The difference loving parents can have, even when you don’t have much money, is astonishing. I ended up in a scholarship to Uni, now in a profession etc.
My life couldn’t be more different to that of my old friend.

True and so sad about your old friend.

ChonkyRabbit · 24/01/2025 14:55

One day I was sitting colouring with the news on in the background and there was a feature about fertility treatment. I looked up at the TV and it was showing a chef preparing leeks... obviously it had moved on to the next item. But I spent the next several years thinking sperm looked like leeks... and telling my primary school friends the same.

Angels playing bowling I was told as a kid.

Yes my mum used to say this.

Newfoundzestforlife · 24/01/2025 14:54

When I was around 8 my Mum told me that when adults have sex they make animal sounds....I genuinely thought for years that they moo'd like cows and baa'd like sheep 🐑 😳

Cyclebabble · 24/01/2025 14:54

I am showing my age a little, but when I was about 10-11, the word paedophile was not used very much, and papers used to use the expression "sex with a minor". At that age I had some idea what sex was, but I thought a minor was a coal miner. In my head I thought the problem was that you might get very dirty being close to the miner who would be covered with coal.

I use to think that buses made a noise when moving because they were unwell. It only twigged that buses had engines when a bus broke down.

In my daythunder was God moving the furniture around.
Anyone else remember this?

When I was really young I remember sometimes we'd get a knock at the door and my mum would tell us to hide in the kitchen where there were no windows. A couple years went by, wed moved by then and I assumed we had been hiding from debt collectors. Once I was late teens it came up in conversation and she told me it was actually hiding from the jehovahs witnesses not debt collectors 🤣

Lol. If you open the door once and tell them you want to be on their "no call list" you get left alone.

Idontpostmuch · 24/01/2025 14:48

In the infant class my teacher used to walk round saying Miss Wright over and over. I used to wonder why Miss Wright never appeared. Years later I realised she'd been saying miss, write, to remind us to write on every second line.

I've just remembered that one of the things that terrified me about the idea of sex when I first knew of it was that I knew of sperm but not semen, and thought it would be a sort of mass of very tiny but perhaps visible wriggling tadpoles that came out...

OMG! You’ve just reminded me! At a sex education lesson I learned that when you started your periods the ova (egg) would come out with the lining of your womb.
I was absolutely terrified about that — seeing the egg on my sanitary towel. On my first period I closed my eyes when going to the loo as the idea of the egg in my pants made me feel so ill.
It was about a year later that I realised the egg was microscopic 😂

I used to think that when you saw a "To let" sign on a building, it was a polite way of saying there's a public toilet in there.

Yes, me too. Similarly, I thought pubs with Free House on them were giving away beer.

When I was a small child the term 'ceasefire' seemed to be on the news a lot, I thought it meant that people built a big bonfire and then sat around it talking.
It didn't occur to me that it meant 'stop shooting at each other'.
I also thought that in Star Trek there was a place called 'Bowbligo' where no one had been before.

I had to say the intro to myself just now, before I realised what bowbligo was!

This is one I've heard a child in our family mishear recently!😄 they thought exactly the same! It must be a common one.

We had a real "Bug Day" when I was at school.
It was when "Nitty Norah" came to inspect our hair !!

Well, I only realised that "the little piggy went to market" didn´t mean he´d gone shopping while reading mumsnet a couple of years ago. I´m 50.

Oh. My. GOD...

That ladies don't just decided they want a baby and hey presto, it's there in their tum and ready to get growing. Also that ladies don't just get to a certain age and happily wake up one fine morning pregnant.

I did not have a single clue that men were involved. To be fair, I went to a Catholic primary and there was a lot of talk about the Virgin Mary, who kind of did conceive like that, according to the teachers. Well, OK God may have helped, a bit. Ineffably.

I was a tad disappointed when the truth finally dawned.

KangaRoo00 · 24/01/2025 14:28

My dad used to let me make cigarettes in his special rolling tin, it later transpired said tin contained tobacco AND cannabis. My mum also used to burn a 'special rock' into her cigarettes.

Im actually fine as an adult

I thought the equator was an actual radiator that ran around the centre of the earth.

Flustration · 24/01/2025 14:28

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 24/01/2025 13:26

Your post just reminded me! I was an inattentive little thing at primary (since diagnosed ADHD), and I had clearly annoyed my teacher, because she snapped at me "Vroom, what did I just say?'

I didn't realise she wanted me to precis her instructions and then carry them out, because I repeated, word for word, her previous three sentences, which were along the lines of "Now, I want you to - Michael, put that pencil down and listen! - pick up your books, now where's my pen?" Everyone laughed and I didn't know why.

I could absorb what people had said without really seeming to pay attention (as many children do), so I'd heard what she said, but she obviously thought I was away with the fairies and my repeating verbatim what she'd said annoyed her even more!

I was also a very literal child so this and @ElsaMars "pull your socks up" really resonate.

I was always getting told off with no idea why, despite being a very quiet and keen to please child. I remember standing in a large circle at Brownies being asked to name types of parties. By the time it got round to me all the obvious ones had gone, but I remembered hearing people on the news talking about the Labour Party, so I went with that. I was shut a small, dark kitchen as punishment for... for what I'm still not sure to be honest! For being disrespectful perhaps.

I thought that if someone was "Helping the police with their enquiries" that they were actually helping the police like Poirot, or Sherlock Holmes.
