Housing association saying I’m unreasonable I don’t think I am !!!

The HA need to do planned repair/upgrade work. The appt slots are 830-1230 or 130-530.
I asked them to book mine around school runs but twice they’ve turned up when I’m out ? Now saying that if they are ‘refused entry’ a third time it will lead to further action???

Surely they have to be fair about this and come at a time that works for everyone

My HA do a 10-2pm time slot to avoid school runs - do yours not do this?

It does sound like you aren't being flexible either in fairness. These things require flexibility on both parts.

You still don't get total flexibility as a homeowner, though, especially with things like internet repairs or appointments with big utility companies.

I've lost count of the number of times I've missed work because BT have given a time slot of "8-1" or "1-6" with no other flexibility.

I live in social housing and i have the same kind of shit with utilities like BT too PLUS!!!!!!! the other stuff we have been talking about here

You have seen the mentality in the sector from the poster who thinks a check should come before a chemo appointment or a funeral.

That's rubbish. If I had a contractor coming in and had to do a school run or work, I would just arrange for them to come outside of these times. There also wouldn't be a requirement that I had to be there all the time, so I could leave a key, or get them to come pre school run, then pop out etc etc. there is way more flexibility when you are booking it yourself.

You’re having something repaired in your home for free.

people who have mortgages and have to pay for their own repairs will be given times slots just like this too and have to deal with it.

you don’t deserve special treatment over anyone else.

You seem to be obstructive about this, yes you are being unreasonable.

How is she being obstructive?

JenniferBooth · 25/01/2025 15:11

And yet according to what ive just found on Twitter many HAs shut their offices on the day of the Queens funeral.

The phrase "two tier" springs to mind!

This. ^ I can't believe the shite some people come out with. Social Housing is not 'free,' and the repairs are not 'free.' The repairs are funded via the rent payments, and many tenants pay rent.

As @JenniferBooth said earlier, some posters seem so jealous of people in social housing, and sooooo bitter that people are in it. But they also seemingly would never live in it, as it's beneath them. 🙄

More fool them. I'm in a beautiful new build HA property on a tiny estate in a sought after rural area, huge garden, double drive, lifetime tenancy that passes to my children and their children and so on. I wouldn't be able to afford such a lovely house with a mortgage. If anyone thinks I'm "beneath" them, I wouldn't want to be friends with someone like that anyway, so they can think on.

Free? So the OP doesn't pay rent for her house? I live in a HA house and pay rent. Can you tell me where this magical HA that gives out houses for free is please? I quite like to save £600 per month!

Could be worse. You could be trying to navigate a full day of work around it!

Maverickess · 24/01/2025 20:55

People actually believe this shit don't they?

Media has done a good job of vilifying SH tenants.

Tenants pay rent, the cost of repairs are built into that rent. Repairs are the landlords responsibility, they are providing a service and they charge accordingly for that service.

That is private and SH tenants.

And additionally, as a mortgage payer, I get to talk to the contractors I hire, I explain about school runs and get to choose the contractor I use as someone who will work around my schedule!

JenniferBooth · 24/01/2025 21:19

@HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend Did you actually say that these checks should take priority over a funeral So if my HA had wanted to do a check or visit on 28th Nov. i should just not have gone to my dads funeral and stayed in for it.

"housing association insists tenant should miss family funeral for safety check"
You honestly wouldnt mind that as a newspaper headline!

What if a tenant was unwell and in hospital, or had an urgent unmissable medical appointment for chemotherapy? Or someone dies and they were attending a funeral.

Oh well, I'm sure the compliance work must take priority over all other life events 🙄

I i had a contractor a. lie and say they couldnt make phone contact with me about planned works My phone log says otherwise I phoned them twice in early November and told them m my dad had died. They agreed works could wait till the New Year and then the HA wrote me a letter this week saying the contractors hadnt had any phone contact with me. I phoned the contractors and they asked why i hadnt phoned themsince early November. I had to remind them that my dad had died and his body was with the coroner because of the way he died. Also been trying to sort adult social care for elderly mother. Apparently though keeping in touch withh these contractors should have joined the very long list of people tocontact that Dad had died plus DMs social care anddealing with the accident that she had on Boxing Day.

Grief is the latest "luxury" not allowed for SH tenants

GreenYellowBrown · 24/01/2025 09:09

YABVVVU. These people have got jobs to do, you’re not the only person in the world to ever have had a child. They’ve given you a time slot so you need to arrange childcare for that time. Presumably this is being done for free so count yourself lucky rather than moaning.

A non HA person has to pay for labour and costs of any/all repairs - it is not covered by rent or mortgage - so it really is free for a HA tenant.

(plus private rent and mortgage can be much higher)

Er no. People who privately rent don't have to pay for repairs! The landlord pays.

Maverickess · 24/01/2025 20:39

"Tricho · Today 19:51

(Edited to add post quoted that didn't attach)

Indeed.

Most of it from the HA. OP can't be in for the entire time slot, and is attempting to find a resolution -

Can I leave a key? No
Can I arrange the appointment when I know I'm going to be in? No
Can someone else let you in? No
Can I leave to collect my kids if the workman is there? No.

What should I do then?
Essentially, be available when we tell you to be available, and that's that, there's no cooperation from our side at all. Do as you're told.

And no, it's not the same for homeowner's because they're the one who decides the work needs doing and negotiates a suitable time with the tradesperson, yes they tell you the time, but if you can't make it then you can arrange another one, even if you have to wait a while. You don't get threatened with next steps for it.

I posted this on another thread but it's very appropriate for here as well (I have left the part about one personal experience out)

I think people are under the belief that because it's council/ha they 'have' to treat you fairly and that any complaints are the tenant being awkward by default because they wouldn't have policies like this to deliberately make life awkward. That's not always the case.

I just want to be treated fairly, only in renting, and especially when you're SH is it acceptable to treat a paying customer that way, people will do all sorts of mental gymnastics to justify it, simply because they believe the bullshit about SH tenants getting everything paid for and feel we should have to pay for that some other way.

I work full time and don't claim any benefits. My rent is paid out of my earnings. If any other service treated someone paying for that service like that there'd be uproar, but because I'm an SH tenant I deserve it according to some, because they can't see past their prejudice.

GRex · 24/01/2025 20:34

Fwiw, yes I do think they should make efforts to manage to avoid school run slots.

JenniferBooth · 24/01/2025 20:34

Beekeepingmum · 24/01/2025 10:54

Of course courts can require you be in certain places at certain times. Even the court appearance itself with be at a dictated time . Not sure you can tell a court you can't attend because of the school run.

Equally you cant tell a court hearing that you cant attend because a contractor from your HA wants to visit you (see PPs post)

GRex · 24/01/2025 20:32

Could your kids be dropped with a friend near school who can walk them in that day? Beg breakfast club to try him for just one day? Do you have other neighbours to ask? I wouldn't do it often, but would be happy to sit in a neighbour's house for 45 min if they really need it.

Sparklebelle1024 · 24/01/2025 20:28

My HA have a specific special request to “avoid school run times” and their contractors always call when they are on their way, I suppose I’m one of the lucky ones. I appreciate they can only give you a rough estimate but can the person call you en route? I’m a working single parent too and these things from my HA really make all the difference!

It doesn’t say she left a note on the door with her phone number.

Eh?

SparkyBlue · 24/01/2025 20:22

OP I'd just book an afternoon appointment and take the DC home early from school. I had to do this before Christmas when one DC got a last minute cancellation for an appointment and logistically it could only work if I took all the DC out of school early .

wythamwoods · 24/01/2025 20:17

saraclara · 24/01/2025 08:47

OP had already said that this isn't something that she needs doing. If she was fortunate enough to own her home, this appointment would not be necessary.

I rather like having control over my own life, rather than a landlord deciding what will happen (whether I want it or not) and making my life difficult unnecessarily.

She’d have to maintain her property, which is what this is about. Not everyone is albe to own their own home.

stichguru · 24/01/2025 20:09

Most services, if they are providing a covered service repair (think gas, water, electric) will give you a time slot 8-12, 12-5 or something. If you need the services repaired, you just have to find a way round it.
