To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

It's a classical greek name. I'm sorry the 90s were so rough for you.

Are you going out of your way to be nasty or does it come naturally?

A stripper name? Or perfume? How to say you're pushing 60 without saying you're pushing 60! Jesus Christ, Donna. Get a grip!

How very ageist of you!

How did you come to that random conclusion?!

It is the name of a (minging!) perfume - what's that got to do with anyone's age ffs?

I associate it as a high from drugs, horrible.

It's an actual name, it isn't made up and I've certainly heard worse. OP doesn't get a say, she just doesn't.

No she doesn't. She needs to be left alone to name her baby what she likes, as I'm sure OP was left alone and didn't expect her sister to think she has a say.

It might be a name, that doesn't mean it's a good idea to use it. Maybe you'd have got away with it in Victorian times!

There's so many children out there with horrible names that they are saddled with.

I'm sorry but if it was my sister, I would have to be honest. The connotations are horrible.

Althenameshavegone · 23/01/2025 22:25

I think it’s alright, but I was expecting you to say ecstasy from the way your were building things up!

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 23/01/2025 22:25

I thought you were going to say Climax 🤣. I associate Euphoria with Calvin Klein ;)

It sounds like a stripper name, or a perfume.

There is a Calvin Klein perfume called Euphoria, maybe that is what inspired the the OP's sister

Sparklfairy · 23/01/2025 22:07

She'll be called Eufy as a nickname at school you know.

And? Euphoria is s an actual name of greek origin. People calling it 'chav' (a really hideous and age bellying term) might have children called things like Harrison. Or Heath. Or Muppet. Which aren't proper names at all. It's a perfectly decent name. A proper name. It isn't at all on the scale of Bambi-uniqua-may-lily-destiny. Ewie is also cute. If the girl doesn't like it, she can always change it. They're babies not miniature dachshunds. They're people and have autonomy. I've really warmed to this name. What does everyone think the bullying, nasty sister should demand her new baby niece is called?

SerafinasGoose · 23/01/2025 22:19

I wouldn't tell her she was mad for choosing the name, no. Some opinions it really is better to keep to yourself.

That isn't to say I wouldn't think it ... 😂

Peachy2005 · 23/01/2025 22:17

Euphoria is pretty bad but you’ll just have to get used to it. Your sis is presumably determined to have a unique name at all costs. The child probably won’t thank her and will no doubt name her own children very plain names: that’s usually how it goes 😂 Don’t forget Euphegenia as another Euph- option 😉

Whoever said Happiness was a lovely name: Happiness is a terrible name because when people (teachers/employers) are unhappy with the person, having to use the name just adds an extra layer of irritation plus all the “unhappy with Happiness” comments.

Is it not usual to say U-ey (Ewie) for U-turn, as in pulling a U-ey? I wouldn’t want that as a girl’s nickname (sounds horrible to my ear) but appreciate if it has special meaning in your family. Both versions sound bad when doing the test of calling “Euphoria, come in for your dinner”, “U-ey, come in for your dinner”…

saraclara · 23/01/2025 22:16

Ewie is what I say when holding my nose because something smells. And yes, other kids will call her pooey Ewie.

Sassybooklover · 23/01/2025 22:16

Ewie, sounds like a character from Star Wars! As for Euphoria, it's dire. Yes, you can tell your sister the name is dreadful, but she probably won't thank you for your input or change her mind. If she really does go for the name encourage her to use a much more simpler middle name, that the child can use instead! Choosing an unusual name is all well and good, but the child is the one who has to live with it, until they are an age to make decisions themselves. I can guarantee the child will get the pee taken out of her by other children, no one will be able to spell it properly and other children will probably struggle to pronounce it.

lifeonmars100 · 23/01/2025 22:10

That is not as bad as I thought it was going to be, it is a bit like Ophelia which I think is a lovely name. If someone told me that their baby was called Euphoria I would probably just think I was going a bit deaf! I am sure she will almost always be called by the shortened version. I have definitely heard worse names but I am tired now and can't recall any of them !

Dogsbreath7 · 23/01/2025 22:05

I think you have the right to say you don’t like it and would be concerned about teasing. If you can’t be honest with family? But don’t labour it then it’s up to her.

Nikitaspearlearring · 23/01/2025 21:38

I usually loathe youneek names but I don't mind Euphoria. It's not necessarily chavvy - I could imagine it in posh circles along with Persephone and Callista. It's not awful. And Ria is an OK nickname for her to choose when she's older. I think you should keep out of this.

Lightbulb moment!

Eweneek, or to make it even classier with a hint of je ne sais quoi, Ewenique

BunnyLake · 23/01/2025 21:58

I thought you were going to say Ecstasy!

It’s pretty bad but what can you do🤷‍♀️

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 23/01/2025 21:54

Loub1987 · 23/01/2025 20:48

I don’t think it’s that bad really. The nickname is cute as well.

Names such as Gloria, Joy, Hope, Prudence are hardly that different.

Plus, her baby, her choice.

None of them would be my choice either but at least they are in common usage!

Doitrightnow · 23/01/2025 21:54

I think it's nice.

Just googled and there are quite a few:
Eugenie
Eurydice
Eulalie (??)
And
Euphoria. Right there on a list of Eu names for girls.

My great grandma was called Eudora

How would you "support," get, lie and say it's a lovely name,? It's awful.

I couldn't lie to my sister!

I like the nickname, including Ria later on. I mix in African circles, though, so these names don't seem strange to me.

Same, and it also links back to Quaker names which were often like this.
