To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

Her schoolmates will call her Eww.

That's just setting her up for awful things like bullying. Looking for a job will be hard. Can you imagine meeting the big boss and Hello, my name is Ew.

Save up some money for her 18th birthday so she can change it if she wants.

GreenCandleWax · 23/01/2025 23:06

It sounds as though your DSis was looking for a name that sounds like your DF's name, but Ewie is setting her up for a lifetime of being teased, or even bullied at school.

What about Eve (Evie) or Yvonne or its Irish equivalent Siobhan (pronounced chivaun)?

Oh stop it! Divisive? It's not like she's calling the baby Adolf is it. That would be divisive.
It's her choice, not the OPs. She should mind her own business.

Divisive as in love it or hate it. There is no middle ground for having a drugs related name

BonnieBairn · 23/01/2025 23:02

It's all very well saying we should leave the parents to it when they name their baby but this a person we are talking about. This is a person that has to go through school, uni amd the rest of their lives with a shit name their parents thought was cute. As parents we are responsible for giving our children proper names, names that could be used in a range if occupations. Names that our children won't be embarrassed by.

I could only find Euphrosyne!

I like that more, probably! So the pronunciation would be UFrosinee. Better than Faif-uniqai- oner- twuth. Or just Karen. Or Sarah who's married to Steve and talks about their cleaner. It's just a name for a baby. The sister is unreasonable because it's none of her business.

In the 'victorian times' - when we were going about building an empire by smashing other cultures - and our heritage - all over the place, people were called Sarah, Elizabeth, Thomas, David, Charlotte or John.

Not true! The Victorians had some really funny names! 😁

I'd tell her sorry it's awful

With my kids I had to do the practical thing and imagine their names on a CV, it weeded out anything stupid for sure.

I have always rued the day - on this basis - when little Finn Anne Sol Crim went for that job at the FCA. One can only live and learn.

It's definitely a name. Google is your friend. And not your wayward brother's son's middle name.

I could only find Euphrosyne!

WhatMothersDo22 · 23/01/2025 20:27

I can’t hear the word ‘Euphoria’ without singing the Swedish Eurovision song in my head!

That might put her off…

Same here! It's a good tune to be fair. 😁

Sopredictable · 23/01/2025 22:53

@lettingsitallbeagain Why not suggest she try 'Euwena' if she's picking a name in memory of your dad?

Euphoria is a tad strange.

It's from a classical Greek word, I'm not sure they ever used it as a name!

Poor kid.

brunettemic · 23/01/2025 22:46

There’s far worse names out there and it’s all down to choice. One of my friends has a Das called Cyril and I think that’s ridiculous but a) clearly she doesn’t and b) it’s not my DS.

Phthia · 23/01/2025 22:46

Suggest to her that she just go for Ewie or, better still, Evie.

Unless your sister has zero ambition for her daughter and expects nothing - why handicap her with a name that immediately marks her out (and not in a good way)?
It's fair enough if you're loaded and your kid doesn't have to think about their future, I'd have been so disappointed in my parents if they'd done anything like that.

Althenameshavegone · 23/01/2025 22:25

I think it’s alright, but I was expecting you to say ecstasy from the way your were building things up!

Yeah, me too. Or a made up word/name that meant something totally different in a different language (so like OP's sister has accidentally called her daughter 'vibrating clitoris' or something in Russian)

Are you going out of your way to be nasty or does it come naturally?

It does come fairly naturally. But I'm not sure what you've taken offense at here? Sorry if I'm being obtuse. I was just trying to say names are subjective.

Dramatic · 23/01/2025 20:24

It's a terrible name, I'd make my feelings clear if it was my sister. Actually if my sister said she was calling her child this I'd laugh in her face

And that would help how?

Pompom12 · 23/01/2025 22:33

There's a lovely name Eunice which I prefer much more to Euphoria. Euphoria reminds me of a plant I miss from my old garden Euphorbia. Then I also had a cd set of dance tracks... Transcendental euphoria it was called. It will be unique.

Are you ok? You're very defensive. You'll notice I didn't pass comment either way, only stated a fact. Kids come up with nicknames in school that can be cruel, and they stick. But if it wasn't for the hoover, Eufy is actually pretty cute as NNs go.

Not defensive at all, duck. The mum can call the baby 'Cat litter', for all I care.

Sparklfairy · 23/01/2025 22:30

BornSandyDevotional · 23/01/2025 22:20

And? Euphoria is s an actual name of greek origin. People calling it 'chav' (a really hideous and age bellying term) might have children called things like Harrison. Or Heath. Or Muppet. Which aren't proper names at all. It's a perfectly decent name. A proper name. It isn't at all on the scale of Bambi-uniqua-may-lily-destiny. Ewie is also cute. If the girl doesn't like it, she can always change it. They're babies not miniature dachshunds. They're people and have autonomy. I've really warmed to this name. What does everyone think the bullying, nasty sister should demand her new baby niece is called?

It might be a name, that doesn't mean it's a good idea to use it. Maybe you'd have got away with it in Victorian times!

There's so many children out there with horrible names that they are saddled with.

I'm sorry but if it was my sister, I would have to be honest. The connotations are horrible.
