To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

Yeah YABU to think you can inform her ‘you need to choose something else’. No matter how stupid the name is it’s not your baby, not your choice. Try supporting your sister instead

How would you "support," get, lie and say it's a lovely name,? It's awful.

TheBunyip · 23/01/2025 20:44

As an ageing raver I wholly support this idea

WellsAndThistles · 23/01/2025 20:44

Up to the parents but poor child....

Maybe start a savings fund and you can help with therapy bills in the future?

Cremeeggtime · 23/01/2025 20:44

Good grief OP, you may as well post her postcode you've given so much personal info about her in your posts.

At least the sister isn't a sheep, calling her child something in the top ten.

Ewe have a point

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 23/01/2025 20:44

Am I missing something? It really isn’t that bad. It’s just another virtuous name like Joy, Faith, Hope, Harmony, Verity.
It’s a little unusual and not my cup of tea, but it way less “out there” than half of the names you hear these days.
Ultimately it’s none of your business and your mum is right. It’s not like she’s calling her something offensive so you really need to button it.

Start singing the song from eurovision top of your lungs every time she the name is said. You may find she changes it.

Oh dear, I am to blame then I think Blush she use to love the name Victoria at the beginning of the pregnancy... I couldn't help but sing 'Victoriaaa!' From the Victoria plumb ad Grin

It's a hideous and chavvy name, but your mum is right. It's not your place to say anything.

It's a good job she's locked down a nickname, people would have called her Euph lol. Ria makes sense when she's older.

Ewie is also quite baaaaad

Awful, just awful.

I just keep thinking of cheesy dance tracks or dance clubs, with the implication of MDMA being involved.

Her ex boyfriend died from water intoxication caused by MDMA at a Basildon nightclub Confused

He was a right idiot. Loveable but an idiot.

Some people will assume that your sister likes the programme Euphoria.

Shame that she didn’t pick something else like Eugenie

ru53 · 23/01/2025 20:41

I don’t mind it. It’s no different to Joy really, a bit frilly for my tastes but nothing wrong with that. People are so closed minded about names.

BeardieWeirdie · 23/01/2025 20:40

Makes your sister look like a Trans activist.
Poor baby. YANBU

Circumferences · 23/01/2025 20:40

Has the baby already arrived? If yes it's too late I'm afraid.

You might have a chance of hinting you think the name is awful in your own subtle way during pregnancy but once it's arrived, game over really.

Nap1983 · 23/01/2025 20:38

Only thing that springs to mind is the Calvin Klein perfume….

mindutopia · 23/01/2025 20:37

Ewie, I assume is meant to be pronounced You-ee, but I can’t help but hear Oo-ie as in Poo-ie, which sort of means yucky or smelly.

But yeah, sorry, Euphoria just sounds like a bad stripper name.

Poppyseeds79 · 23/01/2025 20:37

I thought you were going to say "Happy", so Euphoria is a vast improvement.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 23/01/2025 20:36

I mean, it's not great but neither is slagging your sister off to potentially millions of people.

lightsandtunnels · 23/01/2025 20:35

Not my choice but I've heard of and taught children with names far more bizarre that that! It might raise an eyebrow at school/nursery or whatever but everyone will just accept the name and get used to it. I think the nickname sentiment is very cute though and I rather like that!

Meadowfinch · 23/01/2025 20:35

If it's ok to call someone Joy, then why not Euphoria?

It's none of your business. She can choose any name she likes as long as it isn't offensive. And it's quite sweet. Ria is a nice nickname.

HipToTheHopDontStop · 23/01/2025 20:35

StormingNorman · 23/01/2025 20:34

I think she’s making the name fit the nickname for your dad.

Perhaps she could try Ewa? The Polish version of Eva. Then she could still use the Ewie nickname.

No she couldn't.. because it's still pronounced Eva.
