To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

It’s not that terrible. Makes me think of the euphonium.

goodnightgrumble · 23/01/2025 20:53

Heard a little girl called Navy recently. Never heard of it except the colour

You go ahead and upset your sister with your smugness about her dds name OP. And when you've caused a rift and possibly alienated her, you can come back and tell us all about it.
Or how about you dont, just keep your nose out and your opinions to yourself. Honestly.

Or her sister realises that it is a divisive name and has a change of heart and spares her child a lifetime of comments about her name.

Marcipix · 23/01/2025 20:52

Eugenie is really nice, and Eustacia is better than Euphoria.

SouthLondonMum22 · 23/01/2025 20:52

She probably doesn't like what your children are named either. Names are subjective, you don't get a say on her baby's name.

I can’t hear the word ‘Euphoria’ without singing the Swedish Eurovision song in my head!

That might put her off…

Came to say the same! Get her to listen to that song, it will soon put her off.

I know a child called LaRose.

I prefer Euphoria by a distance she the nickname is very cute, with a lovely family connection. It's genuinely not awful. But she could go with other Eu names like Eustacia and... Can't think of anything...

Euphemia!

As an ageing raver I wholly support this idea

How about ''Comedown'' as a middle name, @lettingsitallbeagain ?

SailingYachty · 23/01/2025 20:52

Point her towards the TV programme Euphoria, that will likely change her mind! Maybe best kept for a middle name.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 23/01/2025 20:51

@lettingsitallbeagain I know that there is a girl in essex goes by the name of chlamydia!! her mother was very young and didnt get the ramifications! thought it sounded floral!

Spirallingdownwards · 23/01/2025 20:51

Euphoria is the Tv show about drug addicts etc

Perhaps remind her of that association.

Jk987 · 23/01/2025 20:50

I'm not so keen. It's what happens when you're high on drugs.

Leavesandacorns · 23/01/2025 20:49

I quite like it and I don't usually go for unusual names. Regardless, it's not your place to tell your sister to choose something else Hmm.

oakleaffy · 23/01/2025 20:49

@lettingsitallbeagain Euphoria is a rather silly name.

It leaves the kid open to being the butt of many jokes, especially when she's a grumpy menopausal woman- She will detest it.

Fine when one is young and pretty and wafting about- less appropriate when one is older.

Loub1987 · 23/01/2025 20:48

I don’t think it’s that bad really. The nickname is cute as well.

Names such as Gloria, Joy, Hope, Prudence are hardly that different.

Plus, her baby, her choice.

ThinWomansBrain · 23/01/2025 20:48

No offence, but Ewie sounds worse

SnidelyWhiplash · 23/01/2025 20:48

I don’t believe you. No-one’s that stupid.

Hwi · 23/01/2025 20:47

Idiocy like that is only ever OK if you have a few dozen million to this name - like Apple Paltrow or Fifi Trixibelle whatever. People on normal salaries should be merciful to their children.

Saz12 · 23/01/2025 20:47

I quite like it, and usually prefer traditional names.

My first was meant to be Alice. So I sang "who the fuck is Alice" repeatedly in recovery room (morphine had been administered, copiously).

GRCP · 23/01/2025 20:47

I actually really like it.

Euphegenia?

As in ‘Euphengenia Doutbfire dear’

Cocothecoconut · 23/01/2025 20:46

Ask her how her daughter as a teenager / adult ( porn star) will feel with a name like that
utterly ridiculous

I like the nickname, including Ria later on. I mix in African circles, though, so these names don't seem strange to me.

I knew a Victoria, whose parents had nn'd her Ria. At school she was always called Ria End.

I heard when we left school she'd insisted on being called Vicky.
