To tell my sister she's mad for naming her daughter this?

First baby. The name is a word. A word you would use to describe a very pleasurable feeling. No, not orgasm, before anyone says it!

It's absurd and I think someone should tell her. AIBU to say 'sorry, but it's ridiculous. You need to choose something else'.

My mum is all very supportive and says 'well, sometimes we don't like names. Then can't imagine them as anything else'

I think this is an exception.

May as well tell you the name actually, as my sister isn't going to be on MN! The name is Euphoria

She wants to call her Ewie for short, the nickname our late dad went by (he was an Ewan)

If she wants to call her Ewie why doesn't she call her Ewie to begin with?! I don't get this, my cousin had a baby she wanted to call him Sam, so she named him Samuel then got pissy when someone called him Samuel. That's his bloody name you melt, you chose it don't get mad when people use it!
Also I think Euphoria is a very bizarre choice, it's up there with my friend actually thinking she could name her daughter Pedigree!

nam3c4ang3 · 29/01/2025 18:06

Yikes thats bad. She will be bullied in school for her name if shes unlucky. I have a friend who is Constantine, he was (and still is sometimes) called 'cunt' for short. Kids can be brutal. Ewie - i mean, i dont even know, maybe it's ok for a baby/kid but as an adult? No.

This thread popped into my head this morning when out for a walk @lettingsitallbeagain and the thought that came was that your DSis should save it for a boy. My daughter would have hated being called Ewie as it’s really quite a typically male nickname, and people would probably ask “short for Ewan?” Tell her to save it for a future son, and Victoria and Ewan would actually be quite nice distinctive but non-embarrassing names. What a pity you poured scorn on Victoria in the first place - is it possible your DSis is just winding you up now because of that? Euphoria, as others have said is more likely to be shortened in school to Eufy, a robot vacuum cleaner brand.

Heard a little girl called Navy recently. Never heard of it except the colour

i know a Navey(spelt ey though) love the name

dont mind euphoria, not a name id pick though. Eowyn is nice

Alltheyearround · 28/01/2025 19:48

Euphoria sounds like an indie band from the 90's, or possibly a DJ, give it up for.. DJ Euphoria doing a Boiler Room set! Just needs some tiny decks for when she's 2 or 3.

cantcookshouldntcook · 28/01/2025 14:27

Euphegenia Doubtfire dear. Help is on the wayyyyy

AffIt · 28/01/2025 14:14

I had a great-aunt named Euphemia, who was known as Effie.

Euphoria, while it wouldn't be my choice, isn't terrible in the grand scheme of things.

Swiftie1878 · 28/01/2025 14:06

None of your business.
She’s your sister - be supportive.

You don't need the 'ph' as 'eu" makes the 'ef' sound. I know a few Greeks called Eugenia and really like the name.

It's actually pronounced Ev in greek - there is another name Iphigenia which has the 'f' sound.

That was only ever a nickname, they never registered him as that. His real name is Duncan!

oh, never knew that. I sit corrected 😄

FormidableMizzP · 28/01/2025 11:01

The nod to your Dad is very special and cute, Ewain would be closer and less likely for ridicule? You're her sister so you should say something gently, now before it's too late. Long names always get shortened by people, I worked with a Felicity who was called Fliss and worse. Imho, when there are literally thousands of names, it's a poor choice. In a world where we can't get away with using nicknames in any official way this will be an albatross. Personally I didn't want to do that to my children but I was lucky, at my work I got name suggestions from my colleagues, along with their childish abbreviations/alternatives, which helped me pick the right names for us.

Queenofthestonage · 28/01/2025 10:55

Eugenia is nicer, as a Welsh person who’s had to put up with a lot of sheep jokes Ewie would be a nightmare!

Let's all not forget Zowie Bowie, who changed his name to Joe.

I know a child called LaRose.

I prefer Euphoria by a distance she the nickname is very cute, with a lovely family connection. It's genuinely not awful. But she could go with other Eu names like Eustacia and... Can't think of anything...

Eustacia...n tube? 🤣

Lolalaboucheridesagain · 28/01/2025 10:26

I don’t think Euphoria is a terrible name as such, but it is one that will draw attention and potentially lead to embarrassment for the child. So as other have said, gently encourage a very ordinary sensible middle name so that as a teen the child has options. Several of my friends have eccentric parents and stopped using their given names as teenagers. But I think as sister, you’re close enough to give your honest opinion, but do it tactfully.

It is a bit ridiculous, but not as bad as 'heaven' spelled backwards 🙄

I actually think that Airohpue (Pue for short) is a very pretty name!!

Skipskipperroo · 25/01/2025 08:37

My mortgage advisor was called Bliss! It always threw me off when she would call 😂

Oh, the irony.

Euphegenia - atleast as an adult can shorten to Gina when fed up with Ewie.

HotCrossBunplease · 23/01/2025 20:28

She could try Euphemia, which is an actual name. Though it does sound a bit like “Euphemism”!

My SIL is called that - she's Greek and we call her Effie. My exdh's uncle was called Euthemios.

Umidontknow · 28/01/2025 08:57

It's awful 😆 but it's her baby her choice, don't get involved she will only get huffy

Ephemera means “things that only exist for a short time”. Hideous as a name.

Oh FFS I was Joking!! I know what Ephemera means for crying out loud.

XWKD · 25/01/2025 23:44

I think Euphoria sounds ridiculous as a name.
