Are Fish and Chips worth it?

Normally cook my own, but last night went to the Chippy.
Had 2 large Cod and Chips and a pot of mushy peas.
Cost 23.80.
Found it very underwhelming.
So glad I normally do my own.

I know costs have gone up, but do you think it's worth the cost?
Do you enjoy it?

The cost of all takeaways are ridiculous these days. It was going to cost us £29 for 2 KFC meals delivered the other week - just fancied it as not had it for a long time. Needless to say we didn’t bother!

Fish and chips are a similar price round here.
We only ever have them if we go to the coast as I’m not fussed really for them.

Imtheslimshady · 23/01/2025 14:53

Depends on the chippy. Round here we have 3 that are all more than worth it, so yes.

Scottishskifun · 23/01/2025 14:53

You get good fish and chip shops and not so good ones. Around us they are very good (lots of awards etc) and at least 2 have gf fish and chips available.

In Scotland its usually haddock rather then cod which I find a much better fish for it.
We generally order 2 portions of chips between 4 of us and still have leftovers typically!

ClockingOffers · 23/01/2025 14:53

I make my own chips in the air fryer which are really tasty but I wouldn’t bother making batter and frying a fish. I usually buy a frozen battered Haddock portion from the supermarket which is pretty decent.

However, I had Fish, Chips and mushy peas in the pub yesterday for €18 and it was bloody lovely. Light crispy batter and really tasty fresh cooked chips.

I’m lucky in that I live in the south of Ireland on the coast and we have fresh fish shops in all the nearby local towns. We also have an award winning chippy not too far away that does fab fish and chips. In contrast, we have virtually no decent Asian restaurants outside of the city. 😩

The saying ‘cheap as chips’ is long gone.

Massively overpriced for what you get now. Even just the chips!

ARichtGoodDram · 23/01/2025 14:50

It all depends on how good it is.

The problem I have here is that one chippy does amazing fish. Like the best fish I've had, but their chips are distinctly average. The other chippy does fantastic chips, but their fish is very poor.

And then by the time you go one place for fish and the other for chips the hassle is too high and it's not fun.

Augustus40 · 23/01/2025 14:48

The local chippy their chips are really good.

Augustus40 · 23/01/2025 14:48

Ours was the same
Ordered through Just Eat. Me and 19 yr ds.

£23.99
Plain sausage large chips large gravy each.

It was yum

SisterAgatha · 23/01/2025 14:47

Chip shop chips done right are brilliant. We are in London and a large chips feeds the whole family, and I can’t finish a whole portion of fish so we share. Where they do a kids portion I have that for £6 all in.

I think it’s worth it

InvisibilityCloakActivated · 23/01/2025 14:47

It depends on the quality of the food and of course what you are comparing it to. If you can make the same meal at home for a tenner then probably not worth it. If you were planning to go out for a fancy dinner that would've cost £40 then £23 is a bargain.

It also depends how often you get it. I rarely eat out or have a takeaway so on the rare occasions I do, that £23 is a price I'm willing to pay to avoid cooking and washing up!

Flipnflop09 · 23/01/2025 14:45

all takeaways are under whelming these days yet still expensive

GasPanic · 23/01/2025 14:45

Fish and chips still the cheapest takeaway by far.

Round here £12 gets you a massive cod, large chips and peas and tastes good as well. Feeds 2 people or 1 very greedy person who has starved all day.

I can see how if you live in some sort of posh Southern place they might look a lot less good value for money but that's one of the prices you pay for living down South.

Flipnflop09 · 23/01/2025 14:44

I would never pay for grease on a plate

Starlight1984 · 23/01/2025 14:43

Anyone else craving fish and chips tonight now???

Crazytimesbackthen · 23/01/2025 14:43

I only really enjoy fish and chips if it’s a chippy with an attached sit down cafe. Served straight to the table with lovely crisp batter on the fish. It’s just not the same once it’s wrapped and the batter goes soggy.

Ineffable23 · 23/01/2025 14:42

Our fish and chip shop you need a large fish and chips for 2 people. And that's not being stingy or because we're small eaters so that's enough food to leave you feeling mildly ill. So for us a large cod and chips is about £12 but it's only £6 each. Which for a dinner you didn't have to cook, you really can't say fairer than that. It's bloody good fish and chips as well, and they vary a lot.

CallingJohn · 23/01/2025 14:40

I do find it expensive these days but then again everything has gone up.

I would'nt mind but for some reason they always make us feel ill after eating them, maybe it's the oil they use now.

RuralSage · 23/01/2025 14:39

I would not pay that for cod, its tasteless, I always get haddock

Inthebleakmidwinter1 · 23/01/2025 14:37

Yeah we love it. We often share a large fish and chips and that keeps the cost down

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 23/01/2025 14:37

It's crazy expensive here. I don't eat fish but its £17 for cod and chips, sausage and chips is £10, mush peas are £3. I don't think it's worth it.

DisabledDemon · 23/01/2025 14:37

No. I find that by the time you get home, they've steamed in their wrapping and the batter has gone soft and the chips are leathery.

However, our local garden centre does fantastic haddock and chips - absolutely delicious. At £14, it is more expensive but not by much and much better value for money.

Tipperttruck · 23/01/2025 14:36

We've stopped having fish and chips. Used to be a cheap takeaway and now costs £50 for the family. I'm better off buying everyone fillet steak.

Loub1987 · 23/01/2025 14:35

Yes I 100% worth both in terms of money and calories. My absolute favourite. Now I will go back to eating carrot sticks and cursing being on a diet.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 23/01/2025 14:35

Always fancy it - then feel rank when eating it. Too much of the same thing.

Love a bag of chips to share by the seaside though.... setting is everything!

Aintnobodygottime · 23/01/2025 14:34

Starlight1984 · 23/01/2025 14:16

Sorry I love a chippy but that sounds awful! Why would you put onion rings and curry sauce in with fish and chips??? As well as peas?! And in a pizza box?!?!

Onion rings, I agree. But curry sauce and peas are normal options, surely?

Two cod and shared large chips from our local excellent chippie is £22 here, and cheaper from the slightly less good one down the road. But @LeopardSnow nails it. Fish and chips is quite a luxury product right now so we need to readjust our ideas of what good value looks like.
