AIBU to be fed up with all the Keir Starmer threads

It's giving me flashbacks to 2016 when there were about 20 threads a day saying nonsense like, "AIBU to be concerned about the EU's plans to conscript everyone into an EU wide army?"

Just put a sock in it, already.

It's interesting to me after so many years of critiscism of the previous Government, who let's not forget were democractically elected, that those on the left are so thin skinned about criticism of this one elected using the same rules. It can only be one of three things I think; insecurity about their choice of Government, arrogance that 'their' party is always right without considering any evidence or debate to the contrary, or an inability to understand how an economy actually works. It hasn't helped that this government has had such a poor start politically, with the controversies over cronyism, corruption, freebies, resignations (fraud and corruption related), misleading business and economic mis-steps.

Politics is becoming increasingly polarised globally, and I don't think that (a) reflects the true make up of the electorate and (b) it's dangerous

I couldn't care less whether people criticise the government (who I didn't vote for, by the way).

What I'm saying is that a lot of these posts have the tone of someone who is here specifically to push an agenda, rather than an actual, normal person who genuinely has something to say about politics. There was a lot of it around pre Brexit referendum as well. It felt like propaganda rather than discussion.

I feel like any further speculation might be taken to be troll hunting, which is against the rules.

He’s been in power for six months. Give him a fucking chance. Do you think he has a magic wand that he’s not using or something?

No one expected a magic wand, that's just ridiculous. But, most of us also didn't expect them to deliberately make things worse. And, even more galling, when they did, their supporters will argue to they are blue in the face that the decision was right, even when all the facts point to the opposite. Just look at the news today about the continuing fallout from the budget. All predicted at the time, to hysterical denial from some...

I think Liz Truss’s (unprecedentedly) short term in office has persuaded some that any PM can be forced to resign at any time, if people protest loudly enough.

Yes, I think you may be right.

They're ignoring that some people really didn't find 4 PMs in 5 years to their taste and would actually prefer the merry go round to stop for a while. And this is not a party political view either.

Those options are plausible

It tells you how unhappy people are with this bunch of morons who have stumbled into government. This country is finished. There wasn’t much left by the Tories anyway, but now it’s well and truly finished.

Maybe it was an Olympic salute, that's quite similar to a Nazi salute.

He tapped his chest/heart to signify love and ‘threw it out’ to the crown in a weird Elon wave. There was an equally weird Elon dance, too, but perhaps I missed when Goering and Hitler did that the Nazi crowd twerked back 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 23/01/2025 10:46

CautiousLurker01 · 23/01/2025 10:14

I didn’t. I stated that it wasn’t a nazi salute. There is a difference. A GCSE in English should facilitate understanding the difference.

Starmer is evens with the bookies to not be leader come the next election.

LlynTegid · 23/01/2025 07:06

What there seems to be in the many threads is that the standards Keir Starmer is being judged on are far higher than those the Tories were, especially between 2019 and 2024.

I recognise their failures or bad decisions, and that more people voted for 'third' parties (Lib Dem, Reform or Green) than Labour. However, I will not forget how bad the last few years of the Tory governments were. As I have said on other threads, I don't forget that as with Charles I, the Tories under Boris Johnson illegally suspended Parliament.

To be fair the English High Court ruled that the decision to suspend Parliament was lawful - the government lost on appeal;

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49604584

The government also won in the Belfast High Court;

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/sep/12/northern-irish-court-dismisses-case-against-no-deal-brexit

It was a landmark case and legal opinion was divided.

Resorting to calling people who disagree with you a Nazi. How refreshing.

EasternStandard · 23/01/2025 09:39

All this stuff about ‘fake’ is pretty much ignoring what many are saying. A poll today put Labour in third

So yeh Labour will have to get used to seeing other views on a public site.

Although I don’t mind if pp try they might find other sites after all

Hardly helpful.

QuimCarrey · 23/01/2025 09:26

It is a bit boring. The people who keep making them could stand to be more interesting.

stickygotstuck · 23/01/2025 09:22

Cattenberg · 23/01/2025 01:08

It is getting a bit weird now. All these threads speculating that Keir Starmer will resign soon. Why would he? Labour won the election only four months’ ago with Starmer at the helm and they have a huge majority. Unlike say, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, Starmer isn’t what some people call “an unelected PM”.

The idea that Trump (and Musk) might force Starmer out of office is weirder still. If that does happen, we can say goodbye to our democracy and enjoy being a puppet state of the US. The strangest thing of all is that there are (supposedly British) Mumsnet posters who would welcome this.

Agree.

Most of them sound fake too.

I have observed since 2016 and the Cambridge Analytica debacle, that conservatism as a political entity seems to rely a lot on disinformation and general lies and slander (and not just in the UK).

We all know politicians don't exactly shine for their absolute honesty, but this is getting ridiculous. And insulting to the ordinary person in the street (aka the people they hope will vote them next time round).

Beekeepingmum · 23/01/2025 09:17

People are very short-termist these days and need instant gratification. If things don't get better overnight they complain. The government are making long term decisions. We'll see where we are in 5 years.

Not he fucking didn’t. Anymore than identical pictures of Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren can be construed as nazi salutes. Are we no longer allowed to wave anymore? That said, I do think Elon is a crazy fucker.

Yes, he did. The photos of kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren were taken from videos of them waving, pointing and gesticulating during speeches. Musk did a very clear, emphatic and deliberate nazi salute immediately following the end of his speech.

I do have to wonder about the reasons why someone might wish to deny what musk did and what it says about them.

A dip in the economy? ‘Right wing whingers’? ‘Hard right’?.

You are tone deaf to what is happening in the world. I would be interested to know your professional background - for context, you understand.

In the interim, now is the time to deploy that critical thinking. Tectonic plates are shifting globally - we have an increasingly bifurcated world, much of which is inflationary. We have an ageing demographic, we have a comparatively unproductive workforce, and declining influence - none of which is unique, but we do have a wholly unqualified government - barely any commercial experience/acumen amongst them - and it shows.

Don’t let your hatred of the Tories blind you to the incompetence and spite of Labour.

I think that's what they call word salad.

CautiousLurker01 · 23/01/2025 07:56

I think labour are doing great.
On what basis? Growth and inflation indices are performing poorly compared to the trajectory we had begun to see before they came to power; teacher training figures are down 8% and no policy on actually how to improve education (just thousands already on the state school waiting lists and SEN budgets blown); I could go on.

Our alternative is a lurch to the far right.
it’s not an ‘alternative’ - there are other parties besides Reform and any Rightward shift is ALWAYS driven by extreme L-wing policy, as we are seeing in the US, and have been observing all over Europe for the last few years. The way to prevent the lurch is for the Left to wind their bloody necks in and make efforts to build bridges between disparate and conflicting demographics within society. You know, like government is supposed to do? Represent ALL of its electorate.

I think anyone who is politically slightly right leaning all the way through to far left should rally behind our current government to prevent the shitshow that is happening in the US from happening here.

The way to stop what has happened in the US from happening here it for the Labout government to learn from the mistakes of the Democrats (see previous point). They need to listen to the electorate and the numerous think tanks that they invest millions into in consultancy fees, and they need to listen to businesses, health and education leaders to make decisions on sound evidence bases, not ideological ones. If we end up where the US is, it’ll be because Labour have done exactly what the Democrats did.

Trumps puppet master,
People seem to muddle trump the man with Trump as the face of the presidential office - ie they truly do not understand the Americal political system at all. The President is a figure head. He has very little personal power. His EOs etc will have been drafted by a committee of experts, not him, the policies devised by a team in the ‘Presidential Office’. The president has always been a puppet of the party. Always.

Musk did a fucking nazi salute for fucks sake.

Not he fucking didn’t. Anymore than identical pictures of Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren can be construed as nazi salutes. Are we no longer allowed to wave anymore? That said, I do think Elon is a crazy fucker.

Starmer and his motley crew are such a rich source of material, so I think this story runs - as long as Labour are in power, anyway.

Hopefully, they will not serve a full term, and then your wish will be granted!

If the Tories managed to last 14 years I think the chances of Starmer not serving a full term are next to zero tbh.
