My whole family forgot my birthday

Oopsadaisy92 · 22/01/2025 14:31

Kind of light hearted but my brother, my parents and most importantly my DH have all forgotten to wish me happy birthday today. At time of writing it's 14.30.

Just to confirm my birthday is on the 22nd of January... I haven't got my dates mixed up and it's like the 21st today or something??

Also - any ideas on being petty? I feeling like letting them all know at this point needs something big so it doesn't look desperate for attention 🤣

Just buy yourself a nice cake and eat it in front of them later. When they ask why you have such a cake, say, it's my birthday! You could text them all saying it's my birthday today?! Happy birthday 🎂 🥳 If it's any consolation, I usually have to buy my own present and cake every year, because my husband forgets. Last year they actually remembered for the first time! Which was lovely. Think it's because I've started to remind them when my birthday is, the week before. Maybe that's a good plan? Gives people time to shop and get presents & cards. Get yourself a takeaway and enjoy it!

My parents and family totally forgot my 8th birthday. I was a very loved child. Sometimes things are forgotten.

I wouldn’t say anything today, it lets them off the hook.

Tell them tomorrow that it was your birthday and they forgot.

And then make sure you deliberately forget ALL their next birthdays.

Don’t listen to anyone telling you to be the bigger person.

Hah! I'm certainly planning on holding it against them all for the next 20 years!

You could hold a surprise birthday for yourself. Buy a cake, candles and a gift and invite them all over and come out yelling “surprise” and singing “Happy Birthday to Me”

Happy Birthday and I’m sorry. Maybe they’re just all coincidentally a bit disorganised this year. X

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/01/2025 15:20

It was my partner's birthday on Sunday. As we did last year, we've come away for the week to a lovely holiday cottage because (a) January birthdays can be a bit shit and (b) I love her and want her to have a really nice time. I had a bagful of gifts for her that I'd carefully chosen and a card I knew she'd love and we had a special birthday dinner with her favourite fizz.

How can anyone 'forget' their loved one's birthday (apart from if they have memory loss, obviously)?

This happened to me last week! I'm sorry OP, I know how crap it feels.

Happy birthday OP and Happy Birthday for last week to @EmbraWumman

I'm not overly sentimental about birthdays or doing huge things to mark them but having your parents and spouse acknowledge and mark it in some way, whether that is just with tea and cake at home or a phone call and card is the very least that someone can expect.

It's rubbish if you are expected to remind people who are supposed to care for you in advance that you have a birthday. It's not hard to remember that your child or spouse was born in January

It's shit and you don't deserve to be forgotten. I would take yourself off for a lovely dinner and then ignore their next birthday. Possibly divorce your shitty husband.

I never quite understand the birthday posts on MN.
Have you asked for any presents? Mentioned going out for a meal or doing something special for dinner?
If the answer is no and you were just waiting to see whether or not they remembered, then I feel you are partly to blame.

🙄

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 22/01/2025 15:08

@Oopsadaisy92 order yourself a bouquet of flowers and put it from an old childhood friend your dp has never heard of! get it delivered late this afternoon so they see it when they come in from work! make them feel guilty!

WhoDatNow · 22/01/2025 15:08

Happy Birthday

Arlanymor · 22/01/2025 15:06

Happy birthday OP. Is this usual for them? If not then it’s really odd. I’m with the posters who also don’t like it when people pretend to forgot because there is a surprise coming. I hope everyone bucks up their ideas for a bit, but frankly I would be taking myself out for dinner and just enjoy some alone time.

@marriednotdead’s post is so lovely, what a sweetheart you are! Happy birthday to your daughter too!

Happy birthday OP! Go buy yourself a treat.
I wouldn't say a word but I would forget their birthdays this year.

Pigsinblankets13 · 22/01/2025 14:57

Whaaat
I find this a bit bizarre tbh, even if they have a surprise planned. I'd expect at least a message by now!
Hope you have a lovely evening...get some cake and wine!

Unescorted · 22/01/2025 14:56

Happy birthday @Oopsadaisy92

You shouldn't have to remind people with hints of presents/ cards. I am really bad at remembering when things are.... So I put diary reminders in for the important things. Frankly I would not be light-hearted about it in the least.

HaveItAll90 · 22/01/2025 14:55

That's awful OP!

Personally (I can be petty...) I'd say nothing at all. Then at 9pm be like so where is my bday card/gift? Amd be fuming they forgot

Oh and Happy Birthday from me 🎂

fingertraps · 22/01/2025 14:54

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/01/2025 14:39

I always think that doing this - pretending to forget and then having a "surprise" later - is really mean. It can actually spoil a person's day.

Totally. I don’t get this at all.

Han86 · 22/01/2025 14:54

Ohshutupcolinyoutwat · 22/01/2025 14:43

Load of bullshit. The very least you should expect from a partner is a happy birthday and a card without needing to prompted!!

We generally don't buy cards for each other...waste of money that ends up in the bin!

My parents and brother will pass on a card when I see them. This might be before my birthday but is often after. I also might only remember to send a birthday text in the evening if I happen to look at the calendar!

I just wondered if this was going to be one of the many birthday posts where the poster says no one does anything, but doesn't set out their expectations.

Earlier in the week I would have said for my birthday can we get takeaway as it's a weeknight. Or as my birthday is midweek, can we go for a meal the weekend after?
As I do the shopping I would have bought my own cake!

Anyway, I do hope you have a good birthday and manage to perhaps treat yourself to dinner tonight.

TinyGingerCat · 22/01/2025 14:53

I wouldn't expect you to have to remind people but hasn't your birthday come up in the course of general conversation with you DH over the last few weeks? For example, "I hate January but at least we have an excuse to go out for my birthday", or " I fancy going to that new restaurant/to see the film etc. shall we go on my birthday?". I love my birthday so can't imagine never mentioning it.

Happy birthday 🥳

Beansandneedles · 22/01/2025 14:52

Solidarity op, I got to about 25 and used to actively ask for phone calls for my birthday. Gave up on that a few years later when they continued not to bother. Idk why it's so hard. I'm married now and my husband's family never forget 🥰

Sorry you were hoping for better xx
