To wonder if Starmer can survive the vibe-shift?

Trump has been going hell for leather since his inauguration it seems, things are changing fast - Trump likes the UK, but he doesn't like Starmer. Starmer seems out of sync with the changing tide, and seems (to me) to get it wrong and make it worse everytime he opens his mouth. AIBU in wondering how long Starmer can hang on?

MNHQ don't always get it right though. One poster got to three threads before they were banned, despite lots of people reporting.

I agree with you. Mumsnet does seem to be a middle class, centre to left platform. Right wing views are not really seen. Does there need to be more balance? Yes. What isn’t needed is people (not allowed to say the b o t word), signing up with an agenda, causing trouble, then leaving. That’s what happened with Twitter and it totally ruined it. Genuine posters tend to post on lots of different topics, just not politics.

Mnhq have said don’t hunt on the threads so if you’re reporting and the posts are staying it looks like it was an incorrect judgement

From the poster that is

It pretty much was in 2009. There were a few outliers but actually it was mostly left leaning, back when that spoke more to an economic model and not identity navel gazing.

Long before my time!

Nigellasrockyroad · 22/01/2025 16:58

@AnonymousBleep yes, I stand corrected. I think it is more centrist.

DuncinToffee · 22/01/2025 16:57

Biggest movements in polls

Con -> Reform 3.5%
Lab -> Reform 2.3%
Lab -> Green 1.9%
Lab -> Lib Dem 1.5%
Lab -> Con 1.1%
Lib Dem -> Reform 0.8%

I don't think that's true at all. Any of the numerous posts about private schools, inheritance tax changes etc show that there's a large right wing element on here. I actually think it's pretty evenly split, politically. If anything, it's fairly centrist, reflecting the general UK population.

MN has never been a (eta:totally) left wing echo chamber.

People posting right wing views is fine, of course it is. People promoting hate and conspiracy theories is not. And there has been a lot of the latter recently. Often in the guise of faux concern or innocence.

I don't think OP is a "you know what", for the record. But they have obviously recently name changed.

I think it is time MNHQ banned name changing except for boards like the relationship boards and others where posters need to be anonymous to be safe.

It's certainly been a left wing echo chamber since Trump was elected, it reminds me of our NHS staff room at the height of the gender nonsense.

If it was the disillusioned Tory right who gave reform the voting share of 19% at the election, who do you think has continued to bulk up that figure to 24% today - even while Badenoch has signalled a retreat to the right for the Conservative party?

Edited

The Conservatives are struggling with their members defecting to Reform. It's an ongoing process. That's why Badenoch is doing the whole move to the right thing (a tactical mistake in my opinion, but I don't vote Tory so no skin off my nose).

Nightingaille · 22/01/2025 16:54

Power speaks to Power, wait till Trump needs something from the UK, and he will. He'll speak to Starmer not the MP for Clacton

ByMerryKoala · 22/01/2025 16:51

AnonymousBleep · 22/01/2025 16:33

I don't. It's not a right wing shift when people on the right of the Tories (mainly older white men, as demographics clearly show) shift their vote to Reform. Those people were already hard right. The demographic has not changed in any significant way, only the parties.

Labour did benefit from the collapse of the Tory vote but it wasn't just hard right Tory voters moving to Reform (who, with respect, are a dying breed). As you say, some moved to the Lib Dems or even the Greens, neither of whom can be described as 'right wing.' As more and more people move into the cities, the vote moves to the left. The UK has always been a centrist country but the apparent shift to the right is an artificial one, amplified by a minority of extremely loud voices and the entire right wing press (who, again, have an older audience).

My personal opinion is that MN has been a total echo chamber for left/labour supporters up until quite recently. It's refreshing to see that change. Every thread that is even slightly critical of labour is met with bot accusations, or Hi Nige, tory hq etc within the first page of comments. If you want a left wing echo chamber, try bluesky.

I accept we all have different political leanings. Mumsnet has always been a great way to hear different opinions. What i find sad, is that like Twitter, more and more posters do not seem genuine. It’s ruining what was once a great platform.

Mnhq will know more about posters due to access to posting history

I agree with pp on hearing different views

When are you going to accept that many people do not support Labour and are free to express it? These constant accusations that they must be a bot are ridiculous.

See I remain unconvinced by the effectiveness of EDI training. I'd argue that it's possibly not been as helpful as people think because it's help to foster and build up resentment and it's a key cause of where we are now - it's creating a backlash. I think there needs to be a rethink all round tbh. A number of years ago a lad I knew was trying to join the police, but they had filled all available positions for straight white males. He got the job though. Why? Cos he was willing to game the system and filled in his forms stating he was gay. This was way before there was a backlash against wokeism. He just realised that if he wanted the job, that was the only way he was getting it.

This means on all his responses he's giving 'a gay mans view' when he's 100% straight! So there isn't any more gay representation in the force. But straight white men are able to present their opinion and because listened to more because their paperwork has certain boxes ticked.

It was eye opening to me. It made me realise you can't dismiss the element of abuse of identity. If people want something enough they will find a way.

This guy is was a really nice guy too. I'd generally say he was otherwise an honest guy and the type of person the police badly need. But he was willing to trample over gay men to get it.

But DEI is not only about training. And it's not only about the LGBT.

A part of it is making sure employee's with disabilities have the adjustments they need to work with dignity. Personally, that's a big loss in my book. Especially bad considering many of the horrific conditions the US job sector has including at will dismissal, revoltingly low or totally absent sick leave and healthcare coverage being limited to what insurance decide to fund.

And the training? It's about trying to stop toxic atmospheres where people have historically been allowed to be bullied due to being either gay, POC or disabled.

bluelavender · 22/01/2025 16:14

@RedToothBrush

EDI is so much broader though than training courses. While there may have been overreach in somw areas broader diversity projects at their best reduce barieers to employment benefiting wider society. Some people need reasonable adjustments. I think the pendulum will swing too far and groups like disabled people, carers and those with long term health conditions will find it harder to get jobs or stay working. I hope I am wrong.

Nigellasrockyroad · 22/01/2025 16:13

@PipMumsnet So what is Mumsnet going to do about the trolls? Reporting them doesn’t seem to do anything. They are fairly easy to spot, for those of us who have been on this forum for years.

PandoraSox · 22/01/2025 16:13

The final image showed a group of men, again Asian in appearance, wielding knives in front of the Palace of Westminster. There was also a crying white child in a Union flag T-shirt. This was also captioned, said Mr Shelley, with the wording: “Coming to a town near you

That isn't posting "discomfort" about immigration. That's posting hate.

You described these two as political dissidents, so perhaps you don't mind people posting hate.

Nigellasrockyroad · 22/01/2025 16:05

what a surprise, my comment has been deleted. Mumsnet, when are you going to step up and do something about the bots? Reporting them gets us nowhere.

You’re better off reading the post from mnhq

Troll / bot hunting will get people deleted or more
