AIBU to think my DH has gone mad over this baby name?

So, I’m currently 37 weeks pregnant with DC2, and DH and I are still arguing over the name. For context, we have a DS(4) called Oliver (family name, everyone loved it, no issues there). But this time, DH has got it into his head that we should name DD something, frankly, ridiculous.

He wants to call her Nevaeh. Yes, “Heaven” backwards. He says it’s “unique but meaningful.” I think it’s chavvy and will age terribly (sorry if that offends anyone). I mean, can you imagine a 50 year old Nevaeh filling out her pension forms?

I’ve suggested plenty of other names Sophie, Amelia, even Freya but he keeps turning them down as “too common.” Meanwhile, he’s vetoed names I love (Florence, Ivy, Matilda) because he “knew a girl in school with that name and she was annoying.” 🙄

WWYD? Am I being unreasonable or is DH completely deluded?

P.S. Posting for traffic!

Apart from it being a bit naff it just isn’t phonetic. I get the whole heaven backwards thing but it’s so clunky; is it supposed to be pronounced as ‘Ne-vay-uh’ or ‘Ne-vuh’? (Which just sounds like ‘Never’) 🤷‍♀️
Who knows, but it just does not flow at all!!

Wanderless · 21/01/2025 16:16

Marine30 The ones I've heard are
Ne-VAY-uh.

Tink3rbell30 · 21/01/2025 16:17

Its extremely chavvy.

Hellskitchen24 · 21/01/2025 16:23

It’s hideous.

I love your choices. Thinking about using Florence as a middle name for my daughter.

thesecondmrsdewinter20 · 21/01/2025 16:26

Sorry if this has already been suggested but is it the meaning of the name that matters to him? What about names with heavenly connotations - Celeste, Celia, Diana, Angela, Astrid, Stella, Seren…
or if it’s the ‘N..”, Nora, Naomi, Neve, Natalia, Natasha, Nina, Nancy

LazyArsedMagician · 21/01/2025 16:28

Please get him to spend some time reading the Tragedeigh subreddit. Nevaeh is universally hated there.

Although, that might backfire and give him some ideas and the next name he likes is Brynn-Leigh Texas or something!

The13thFairy · 21/01/2025 16:31

Does you husband understand what 'unique' means? The primary school near me is ankle deep with Nevaehs.

Marylou2 · 21/01/2025 16:32

Hold firm OP. It's a ghastly name. Don't even concede as a middle name.

Grannyinnwaiting · 21/01/2025 16:47

I have a relative called this - they are 16 and have jettisoned it for a gender neutral name. At the risk of being disloyal I would not call my DD Nevaeh

I grew up in the church and knew many people with the name Mary (or the Welsh variants), I’ve never known one girl/woman to be teased about being an ‘eternal virgin’ in all honesty. Especially considering though Mary had a supposed virgin pregnancy, she was married and wasn’t considered an ‘eternal virgin’. And ultimately not known as the harbinger of all evil and doom of humanity. Lucifer and Mary are of no comparison what so ever.

Judging a baby as evil for its name would make you frankly ridiculous.

Judging Lucifer as bad also means you didn't actually bother to learn and understand the stories.

Either way it MAKE you look bad not the child.

A child is no more likely to be bullied called Lucifer than the non existent name bullying that happened to the Marys you know.

I know of 5 Cain's (and all are christian based backgrounds and 3 of which are under 18 and regularly attend our church and go to the church school). Online people always say the same shit that its cruel, its offensive, they will be bullied, people will think badly, they will be called murderers all 'because of the bible link' etc... and no such thing happens in reality and they live life normally just like all the Lukes, Logans, Jakes, Jacks, Jensens, Joes, Noahs, Olivers, Owens and other kids in the classes.

Its usually people not even really involved with the religion that wildly state this stuff, its odd frankly because actual theologists don't judge like that at all.

Wtafdidido · 21/01/2025 17:36

What about compromising on Niamh and Irish name pronounced Neev

Thanks - I did wonder. Bit of a mouthful!

I’m not judging a baby, and I’m perfectly versed in bible stories unfortunately. If you read my posts correctly, you’d see I was saying how others would perceive such a name. I also said in my first reply on this thread that I don’t care about most names (unlike most of MN it seems). Lucifer is one of those that is completely too much and will absolutely cause the poor child in question issues in life. Of course people are going to hear a child called Lucifer and wonder why their parents saw them as ‘devil child’, even if the ridiculous reason they named the child such is because of a long finished tv show. Even Daenerys or Arya is going to seem less weird in 15-20 years time, Lucifer has been a literal satanic name for 2000 years.

Honestly cannot believe there’s anyone actually defending it…

ElsieMc · 21/01/2025 19:35

@gotmyknickersinatwist Can you explain the difference in pronounciation of Niamh versus Neve?

I’ve heard Sian pronounced Sigh-Anne once before and always wondered if that’s how the parents assumed it was pronounced! I know a Sian which is spelt Sharn which is a weird to me but at least people pronounce it correctly.

Sian doesn’t have an ‘r’ sound in it though, it’s pronounced sh-ah-n.

Agree, but it’s close and much closer than how a lot of people would pronounce Sian.

That’s actually a lovely suggestion, thank you! I do like Niamh, but I’m worried about people constantly mispronouncing or misspelling it. We live in an area where Irish names aren’t very common, and I can just imagine her having to correct people all the time. Do you think it would be an issue, or am I overthinking it?

You can also spell it Neave which I think more people can decipher!

I'm paediatric nurse, yes we absolutely do judge when we get a Nevaeh in. 🤣

Being as you have made yourself incredibly identifiable on this forum, you should be careful saying things like that.

JMSA · 22/01/2025 02:03

YANBU!!! 😱

Han86 · 22/01/2025 07:21

I don't get this...if he likes the name Heaven why not just use that. I don't understand turning it backwards. Could you not just pick any word that sounds nice and do that...oh I will love my child, so let's call them Evol as it's love spelt backwards.

If you want an unusual name I suggest thinking back to your own childhood and going round the class. These are the names that are unusual these days but were popular at the time.
Lots of names that are 'normal' but uncommon now: Hannah, Lucy, Emma, Sarah, Louise, Rebecca/Becky, Kim/Kimberley, Jessica, Amy, Kate, Victoria, Lindsey, Rachel, Michelle, Zoe

MissTrip82 · 22/01/2025 07:32

Oh I thought this was an urban myth!

Niamh is pretty though.

I wouldn’t worry about spelling, I have one of the most common girls names in the western world and have to spell it every time. Every time. It’s really not a big deal.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 21/01/2025 11:20

The shop was called Anavrin, not Nevaeh.

Oh god 🤦‍♀️ You’re right, of course it was nirvana backwards, but for ages, every time I see Nevaeh I think of that shop - whoops!

I’m Irish, living in the UK and can guarantee that 99% of English people cannot pronounce or spell Irish names. Niamh is pronounced ‘Neev’ by the way. So your child will have a lifetime of people mis-spelling and mispronouncing it. Personally I find it odd to use names from another culture that you have no connection to, whether Irish, French, African or whatever.

Scammersarescum · 23/01/2025 17:11

I have an unusual name and it's a total fucking nightmare.

Not that his suggestion is unusual. Just tricky to spell and pronounce.

Just veto it and tell him that as its you taking the risk of growing and birthing a new human, he can suggest what he likes but you will have the final say.
