AIBU to think my DH has gone mad over this baby name?

So, I’m currently 37 weeks pregnant with DC2, and DH and I are still arguing over the name. For context, we have a DS(4) called Oliver (family name, everyone loved it, no issues there). But this time, DH has got it into his head that we should name DD something, frankly, ridiculous.

He wants to call her Nevaeh. Yes, “Heaven” backwards. He says it’s “unique but meaningful.” I think it’s chavvy and will age terribly (sorry if that offends anyone). I mean, can you imagine a 50 year old Nevaeh filling out her pension forms?

I’ve suggested plenty of other names Sophie, Amelia, even Freya but he keeps turning them down as “too common.” Meanwhile, he’s vetoed names I love (Florence, Ivy, Matilda) because he “knew a girl in school with that name and she was annoying.” 🙄

WWYD? Am I being unreasonable or is DH completely deluded?

P.S. Posting for traffic!

Perhaps use English spellings of the Irish name Niamh - Neve, Nieve, Neave, Neavh, and Neeve

NewHeaven · 25/01/2025 17:10

Just returned from a kids event and the girls names I heard:

Larissa
Sophia
Eloise
Emilia
Lucia
Zara
Adeline
Violet
Rosa
Eva
Anya
Charlotte
Beatrice
Gina (short for Georgina)

All very classic names which will carry the girls through all stages of their lives.

ScaredOfDinosaurs don't you mean travesteigh 😉

If he’s allowed to veto your choices then you’re allowed to veto his. So along with Florence, Ivy and Matilda it should be completely off the table and should never be discussed again. He’s being a hypocritical twat really if he think he’s the only one that has the power of veto, especially when you’re the one carrying the baby FFS. Also it’s just down right bizarre he ok-ed Oliver for your DS but is now turning down names for being too popular. Don’t get me wrong, Oliver is a lovely classic name but let’s be honest there are way more little Olivers around than Freyas!

Your choices are bad but his is a fucking travesty. Like, beyond awful.

The three compromise names you mentioned are lovely.

It's a made up name. It's horrible. Stick to your guns.

Aren't all names made up?

Absolutely say no. You need to both love the name. I agree with a PP that Niamh might be an acceptable alternative, but only if you both like it.

There is no comparison. nevaeh is a made up name . Niamh is a beautiful irish name. Irish mythology, Niamh is the daughter of the god of the sea, Manannán mac Lir and one of the queens of Tír na nÓg, the land of eternal youth. She was the lover of the poet-hero Oisín.

Sounds vaguely Biblical. Wife of one of the more obscure Old Testament prophets, for example.

That's about all I can find in its favour though.

Vse500 · 25/01/2025 08:28

It’s not unique. Work in paediatrics and see loads of Nevaehs.

i have a bog standard 80s name and still people spell it incorrectly(including my mother!) or even call me a different name eg Susan rather than Stacey

so my point is no matter what people will spell a name wrong and think you should choose Niamh 😆

My gd is called Persephone and dd can't believe how many people call her Stephanie 😳

Manthide · 25/01/2025 07:57

Balloonhearts · 21/01/2025 14:02

No worse than being called Mary. The eternal virgin.

I have a Mary, my mother is a Mary and neither have ever been teased as being ' the eternal virgin'! Dm used to get annoyed when people would say Mary, Mary, so contrary or asked where was her lamb but even dd has grown to appreciate that her name is always spelt and pronounced correctly.

Yes, 'heaven' spelt forwards or backwards is bad luck.

Like Ophelia with all its connotations.

Don't tempt fate.

My friend's granddaughter is called Ophelia and my greek exdh was surprised she'd used that name but then our gd is called Persephone!

DelCalMun · 25/01/2025 07:40

Nevaeh, Neveah, Nivea. 😳😩😱

Robogob · 25/01/2025 01:00

Absolutely dreadful name. Even calling her Heaven forwards would be better.

RachTheAlpaca · 25/01/2025 00:55

Not only is it terrible, but it's also super common now. Lost count of how many parents are so proud to tell you it's heaven backwards, like it's super unique 🙄

Onelifeonly · 24/01/2025 23:02

Keep going till you find a name you BOTH like - what more is there to be said?

Mh67 · 24/01/2025 22:57

Nevaehis very popular and common.we had 4 of them in my work

Bonbon249 · 24/01/2025 22:48

Baby names need to be two yesses. Nevaeh is a Tragedeigh!

NewHeaven · 24/01/2025 22:42

Really crass made up name, awful. People will cast aspersions about type of family you are.

kurotora · 24/01/2025 22:39

The other thing with Nevaeh (other than being chavvy) is that the two I know of are shortened to Nevvy/Nev all the time. Makes me think of Neville.

Throwawaygh · 24/01/2025 22:36

Oh god, I personally think Nevaeh is the most awful name to come out of the ridiculous-must-have-a-unique-name-can’t-think-of-one charade that goes on on social media. Mainly because it’s annoying to see ‘it’s heaven backwards’ every time after it’s written down. Please, for the love of all things holy, persuade him to use one of the lovely names you like.

admirible · 24/01/2025 22:26

It sounds like never. So maybe just call her never.

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 24/01/2025 22:19

I agree!! That is an awful name 🙈🙈🙈

I have a Niamh, seen higher up you liked it and I have had a few misspellings and mispronunciations but I get that with my name too 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 (think along the same lines as Niamh with an Irish Gaelic name too). I absolutely adore her name and always loved it

MrsPCR · 24/01/2025 22:15

Wait until she arrives, see what she looks like. There’s no rush. My eldest (boy) was named before birth, my second (boy) had a girl’s name and my third (girl) was nameless. Both unnamed children’s names came to us quite quickly once they were here.
