What age/year at school, would you put my Dc ar?

This is a difficult question (than I initially thought). I think comprehension exceeds writing. I think if I had to take a stab in the dark I'd say year 2 (probably left handed or mixed as a PP has mentioned) and perhaps, if there are no other obvious factors (eg types of palsy, FASD, lots of etcs) maybe dyspraxia.
The lower & upper case throws me a bit, guessing they try really hard and maybe practicing using those letter stencils so it's mixed it up a bit.

Same, my daughter is 4 in reception and only just started writing her name.

This. DS is in his 2nd year at age 8. Bilingual, not in UK. I got him up to reception/Yr1 level English reading in the holidays, and his reading in his other language suffered as they are such different systems. I hadn’t taught him to write, which was fortunate- there are strict rules on how to form letters, and they’ve now nearly finished learning copperplate, which is his preferred writing. They‘re introducing fountain pens at Easter.

What was the point of all of this, as it doesn't sound as though you are particularly concerned about any potential SEN issues.

Get a handwriting practice book or download some templates if you want something to do.

Your child is doing really well OP for not being at school and working through this phonetically. However, from a UK mum also outside the UK whose child also started school at 6, more formally 7 I’d say relax and don’t compare to the kids learning to read and write formally at 4 in other countries. Once they are young teens they have all absolutely caught up and you will struggle to see the difference. Trust the process, enjoy the other experiences and learnings they have and it’ll work out well.

I agree. My NDN's son just turned seven in November. He wrote our Christmas card and the handwriting was very similar to this.

Reception, some letter formation and presentation points. at this stage of year 1 the majority would be writing on lines (some with guidance)

I’d say reception age late nursery.

My daughter is 21 and writes like this so it’s impossible to tell!

She has a learning disability and severe autism but that does not make her less than anyone else…

And I’m pleased that she can even write like this because of the absolute mountain it was for her to climb

We‘re also abroad, DS was just shy of 7 when he started school and started to learn reading and writing (his school language is not English).

Please, stop comparing your child to UK children! It’s a completely different learning process. And definitely leave it up to the teachers- anything you teach your child now might have to be unlearned. For example, letters and numbers might be formed differently. DS is now in Year 2 of school and they are only just learning to capitalise and use full stops.

I teach at secondary level here, all the children are fluent in at least 3 languages and can all write beautifully! So don’t worry, your child is probably miles ahead of her future classmates.

Don't worry about it, she will be taught properly, and pick it up quickly, when she gets to school.

The different education systems make it hard to compare which is why people are saying reception because in England formal writing is taught early.

However, if she's never been taught then this is fine and she'll pick it up.

Really focus in encouraging drawing and small motor skills rather than specifically writing.

Always have pencils and paper available so she can draw.

Bilingual and not even formally in school yet - she’s done a cracking job!! And so have you teaching her!

If she wants to learn, I’d get her forming lower case letters correctly. There’s loads of fine motor skills games you can play as well to help with pencil grip.

I'm sure once she's at school and doing loads of writing, it will come on in leaps and bounds. One of my kids started school at nine, having been home educated up to that point with no requirement to write unless they wanted to. The speed and tidiness of their handwriting improved dramatically within a month of starting school, due to all the practice.

Like your daughter, mine was doing well in all other areas, so the slow handwriting alone didn't cause their self-esteem to suffer. So I don't think you necessarily need to work on it in advance to get her ready. She can work on it at school.

Spellings - most of it you can tell what she’s writing as she’s using phonetically correct spellings.
Capital letters are randomly placed, punctuation is missing.

Oh well this makes a world of difference in my opinion.
If she hasn’t started formal learning yet then this is great for independent learning.
Letter formation starts as young as 4 in England (I thought the writing seemed that of a new learner).
If she loves reading, read with her and gently point out the capital letters at the beginning of each sentence and see if she can point some out on the next page.

I’m a teacher and I’d say 6 is spot on - year 1/2. The replies saying nursery when she writes beach correctly and tricky words to and the are up a gum tree!
