Nursery, as in age 3-4, writing full correctly-spelled sentences?

Mabelface · 20/01/2025 16:57

Anywhere from reception up to year 3, dependent on the child.

mynameiscalypso · 20/01/2025 16:56

My year 1 child's work is very similar to what @FrodisCapering just posted.

On the spelling, the misspelling of 'weekend' surprises me as 'ee' is a relatively straightforward sound in phonics. While beach is correct, it also looks like it went through several iterations to get there based on the letter formation.

Year 1 struggling a little

My child produced work like this in nursery and I work as a supply teacher and have seen A LOT of reception age children write like this at this point in the school term and I don’t live somewhere that is outstanding or privileged, quite the opposite.

Well only 2 of my daughter's class mates could even write their own name at the beginning of reception so your child sounds pretty exceptional.

Beach spelled with ea has only been covered in year 1 by my daughter's class.

Why private school?

Because of the mixing in of capital letters. This isn't generally good practice so I'm assuming a private nursery then likely a private school which kept it up. I don't think in state school (in Y1) you would have that problem. Obviously if the child is older then maybe state school.

Year 1 or 2. That level of spelling is way beyond reception although the writing is messy.

I agree. I wouldn’t imagine a 4 year old could spell ‘beach’ correctly.

gvhmgnr · 20/01/2025 16:47

I would also say year 1 - no this might not pass the end of year 1 but they still have two terms to go. Most reception children in January of reception wouldn't be able to read half of these words, let alone write them.

Not upside down. A stick with a circle on top of it. I can see the i so clearly now!

No help spelling then I'm going for Y1 private school as clearly not dyslexic.

Looks like my 5 year old who is in Year 1 and a leftie 😁 and literally hates writing ✍️

But there's promise there, overall good letter formation (though size and consistency isn't great just yet) and they have clearly structured their answer to the question which is another important skill.

Not helped, yes maybe an upside one

Reception. My son is in reception and I work in a school.

Stresshead84x · 20/01/2025 16:44

to add though I don't think this would be highly unusual up to age 7 or so- I'm left handed and I struggled a lot with handwriting, writing letters back to front etc- and my writing would probably have been like this later (and I ended up doing very well academically)

Switcher · 20/01/2025 16:43

year 1 probably

Stresshead84x · 20/01/2025 16:43

My boys handwriting was better than this in P2 (Scotland) so age 5- 6 roughly but probably weren't writing sentences like this till later in the year, my daughter could probably write sentences like this with better handwriting around 5.

frenchnoodle · 20/01/2025 16:42

My 7 year old struggles with handwritting and isn't far off this. I'm thinking 6 or 7 but behind with motor skills.

Reception or a year 1 child who struggles with writing.
I’ve taught KS1 and been a senco for 20 years and that’s what would assess them as.
Happy to help if you’ve got any questions.

What would you say about spelling and sentence structure, putting the handwriting aside?
