I caught myself today repeating one of my cockney mums sayings to dd

Although we're estranged, I'm definitely turning into mine. Fingers crossed I don't get her early menopause 😩

Edited to add that I was so happy about getting 4 x steaks from lidl today and planning tonight's dinner. My dm would be the same about a bargain 😄😄

I don’t think so and hopefully it stays that way. I love my Mum but she is astonishingly juvenile and is constantly attention seeking through numerous pointless medical appointments which she then gives me in-depth run downs of while never ever asking a single thing about me. I once asked her if she knew what my job was (it’s a common job that everyone will have heard of and I have been in the field for almost 15 years), and she said she had no idea then spent 30 minutes telling me all about my brothers job instead.

Oh God 😩 sometimes mums just take their daughters for granted

Yes. Solidarity @mumofoneAlonebutokay . Have you got a tribe of women friends around you? They help me model other ways to be a woman, older woman in my case.

Natsku · 17/01/2025 17:49

I wouldn't mind turning into my mum a bit, she's so fit and healthy, in her 70s and regularly goes running and when she visits me she goes cross country skiing - much better than me and my laziness!

But it seems I'm turning into my dad instead. I'm starting to look more and more like him, and I often catch myself singing half forgotten hymns just like he always does (although I also add in half forgotten 90s songs, which he never would).

My sneezes are getting more powerful too.

Yes, much to my chagrin. We're also estranged, hence I dread it. Superficially we look different at least, but lately I see I have the same jowly jawline aaargh.

The estrangement hurts a little more when you notice traits of them in you x

Into my father, I'm afraid - eccentric, not in the cute way and very impatient...

No. We're incredibly, incredibly different so I will be amazed if I do. So different that the lack of any similarity between my life choices and hers is a cause of huge tension, and communication has all but broken down.

Do daughters who are different from their mothers also turn into them eventually, I wonder?

I think that if they weren't a bad parent when you were a kid, it's very possible

No.

My mother is a drug taking paranoid narc.

Absolutely nothing alike.

That is a great question. I am more like my Dad who has passed, this makes me feel more alone parent wise. I have a distant relationship with my dm, but she regularly whatsapps me; it is all surface level. We are very different people.

I wonder if I am becoming more like her with age. I don't think so, but do others see it? It is frightening getting older and I'm not even 40 yet!

Comedycook · 17/01/2025 17:46

My mum died when I was fairly young but I still remember her and yes I've turned into her in many ways. I remember her watching a lot of TV and drinking a lot of coffee....which I do too plus struggling endlessly with my weight! ....Although she was way more extrovert than I am.

Unfortunately not. Mine was a summer day in human form. I’d be absolutely delighted if I was half the woman she was.

That's so lovely ☺️ she sounds lush

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 17/01/2025 17:45

Mine would say 'If you don't do this, I'm gonna have your Guts for garters' and I said it out of nowhere

Growing up, I was similar to my step dad personality wise (thought he was my dad)

I've worked so hard to unlearn everything about the prick and his nonsense ways, turning into DM is a huge surprise 😄

She was quite soft with us, which we needed due to various undiagnosed neurodivergence, and i so get it so do try to the same with dd

My best friend of 60 years, (so she knew my Mum very well) bought me a coaster that says:
Mirror Mirror on the wall, I am my Mother after all.

Not wrong!

OnlyYellowRoses · 17/01/2025 17:41

I sincerely hope not. Mine is toxic, unsupportive and has always resented my very existence.

AgnesX · 17/01/2025 17:41

When I think back my mother was very admirable, she could be very kind and considerate which is something I can't emulate.

On the other hand she was an almighty snob, that I don't try to be but suspect that in some ways I am 😳

Not yet, I’m hoping I can avoid the one-way monologues for another few years at least!

I think I'm more like my dad. My mum is the Alan Bennett, "Talking Heads" episode that was never recorded. I phone her every day and yesterday's monologue was quite poignant but funny at the same time. For context, she's 83 and lives in her own flat but it's sort of assisted living:

"I was looking out of the window and there was this little bird. His feathers were being ruffled up by the wind the wrong way. I thought, 'Turn around you daft little sod.' Then he fell off the branch. Dead. I suppose. Birds die all the time, of course. But you never see a dead bird on the ground, do you? That big seagull might have had him. Do birds eat other birds? I regret encouraging the seagulls with bread and lard. Fat downstairs Lyn has given us warnings not to do it because they plop all over the windows.

Which I agree with, even if she never does a hand's turn and sits in the office all day eating Coco Pops. Did I tell you that I went to the little Pakistani boy's shop? It's like an Alladin's Cave in there! I got a three set of knickers for three pounds! Pound each! They've gone down in price since I lost weight through the diverticulitus. He charges more for bigger knickers. Which is fair. More material and all that...

Our Anthony...

Personality/behaviour wise no - looks yes sadly

I'm only in my early 30s and have 3 kids but I'm the age my DH was when she only had me, her first.

There's deffo some similarities now!!

My DM as well is slowly becoming more like my DGM which is pretty funny as they've never had the best/closest relationship tbh. Whenever my DM is moaning about my DGM I try to remind her she is likely to be the same in the future...

WhenTheyComeForYou · 17/01/2025 17:37

Sadly I’m turning into both of my parents!

Danikm151 · 17/01/2025 17:36

I’m turning into my nan.
my son told me he wanted something. I responded with “I want doesn’t get” really surprised me but I can see her point now!

That start with "can I just say one thing to you"
I know it's going to be a lecture

Crushed23 · 17/01/2025 17:34

Maybe not all excellent, but they're not "bad" people. We're just so unbelievably different.

Crushed23 · 17/01/2025 17:32

Yoheresthestory · 17/01/2025 17:27

For the record my family are all excellent and decent people. I’m just quite different to them.

I feel this way about my family.

If I didn't look so alike to some of them, I would think I'm adopted.
