I caught myself today repeating one of my cockney mums sayings to dd

Although we're estranged, I'm definitely turning into mine. Fingers crossed I don't get her early menopause 😩

Edited to add that I was so happy about getting 4 x steaks from lidl today and planning tonight's dinner. My dm would be the same about a bargain 😄😄

Nope.

Not yet anyway, I can stop talking for longer than 20 secs (not an exaggeration, I timed any break in her talking during a one hour drive recently).

Is she a thought verbaliser? My mum is and it is quite something to behold!

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 17/01/2025 20:36

Long been prepared for turning into my mother, what I didn't expect was turning into my grandmother...

crouchendtigerr · 17/01/2025 20:30

I have become my father. I even look like him.

Lefthanddownnumberone · 17/01/2025 20:29

I am estranged and although she is bright and articulate and very creative she is not a nice person. She melodramatic and demanding, she fakes illness etc - so no. I am starting to look like her at 50 though and I’ve put on weight like her so it’s a good incentive to get fit and lean.

SharpOpalNewt · 17/01/2025 20:27

More my dad. I seem to look more like him as I get older.

Catza · 17/01/2025 20:26

I am turning into mine right now. My mum never wanted to share a house with another man after separating from my father. So much so that her boyfriend of 10+ years has never spent a night in her flat. I find their relationship cute but strange. Fast forward to now.. I separated from my partner not long ago and I am in the process of buying a property and last week I had a thought "I never want to live with another man again. I just want my safe little flat and a long-term date on a side". Whoopsie

@suki1964
My DH and DS have given me fair warning that they'll shoot me if I turn into my Mother.

Oldenpeculiar · 17/01/2025 19:37

I don't know my dad or his side of the family as 'people' as it were because I haven't had contact since I was in my teens, over 20 years ago, so I don't really know if I'm like any of them at all.

All the women on my mum's side have very similar traits, although I look more like my dad we all seem to have very similar mannerisms and ways of speaking - people can tell we're related from that, aunts, cousins etc.

DM and I are very different people, but I've learned that we were similar as teens and young women, but that side of her was hidden from me until recently.

I have however caught myself saying things that she does without thinking, and running through the whole families names including the animals until I get the right one, but maybe that's just universal 🤣

StMarie4me · 17/01/2025 19:36

I'm much more like my dad tbh, without the alcohol and fags!

beholdmylastfuckflyingaway · 17/01/2025 19:33

I am. I consider this stage in my life full actualization.

My mum is awesome.

Gothzilla · 17/01/2025 19:31

No I’m the opposite of my mum. I made sure of it.

She was always judgemental, always “right”, hard, just never an accepting easy going woman.

Edited to add: apologies I just realised it’s meant to be a lighthearted thread.

MozartsMeatballs · 17/01/2025 19:28

Bloody hell I hope not.

Sadly, she recently passed.

Her 'best friend' has been really cut up about it she absolutely loved my mum. Thankfully she never heard what my mum said about her to me. Similarly my mum's neighbours.

I hope I never turn into someone who runs down the people who love them to others.

shellyleppard · 17/01/2025 19:26

Yep I definitely do this.... from always having a packet of polo mints to feeling happy when I get a bargain 🤣🤣 my sons call them nannyeisms 🤣🤣

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/01/2025 19:24

I think so as I’ve just bought react-to-light varifocal glasses!

mollymazda · 17/01/2025 19:24

i bloody hope not! i spent years and years worried that this would happen, so much so, i had to have theraphy! my mother groomed us all from a very young age.

i vowed, i would never ever be like her

LegoBingo · 17/01/2025 19:23

My mum is so lovely it's an honour when people say I'm turning into her

FiveWhatByFiveWhat · 17/01/2025 19:23

I definitely am. Sometimes we say things in unison and we joke my husband gets a shiver down his spine and wonders why 🤣 We also frequently go to call or text eachother at the same time. I've started getting fussy about how the curtains look when they're drawn, which I was never arsed about before. I remember affectionately teasing my mum about how it took her a year to finish a book - shockingly now I'm a mum I kinda get it 🤣

As long as we don't end up turning into HER mum, we'll be ok. Loved my batty old nan to bits, but she really was absolutely nuts (even when she was young, apparently) and could be incredibly difficult to live with.

CraftyNavySeal · 17/01/2025 19:22

I am.

I realise how right she was about so many things. Comfy knickers, shoes and coats that cover your bum for example!

mdinbc · 17/01/2025 19:22

I take after my mum physically, but tend to think my personality traits were inherited from my father. Both are gone now. Although I do catch myself saying some of her little sayings!

LittleBearPad · 17/01/2025 19:18

Accelerating rapidly down that particular slippery slope. DH has taken to looking at me meaningfully when I’m particularly DM like. He is turning into his father, so can’t talk!

BlueWalker · 17/01/2025 19:18

Apparently our physical mannerisms are incredibly similar. My DH still laughs about taking my mum with us to the cinema. and the synchronised movements from us in his peripheral vision. We didn't notice until he snorted when we both leant forward, tilted our heads and adjusted our respective pairs of glasses simultaneously as a particularly attractive male actor walked on screen in just pants.

Miloarmadillo2 · 17/01/2025 19:16

I can see my mum’s mannerisms coming out - rubbing some life back into my puffy face in the morning, using my teacher voice when speaking to children in school (she’s a teacher, I volunteer helping with reading). I don’t really mind, my mum is awesome.

gamerchick · 17/01/2025 19:13

Just her sneeze. It irritates the fuck out of me every time.

OnlyYellowRoses · 17/01/2025 17:45

That's so lovely ☺️ she sounds lush

Lush is the perfect word. She was loved by everyone who met her. I miss her dreadfully.
