To think London is in a major decline?

I’ve lived in London (zone 2) for 10+ years. It’s always been pretty ‘real’ here but since the end of covid really everywhere just seems so, so awful.
Dog shit everywhere, spit everywhere, council owned parks closed and locked, people littering more than ever before. Get on a bus and it’s just people screaming in to a FaceTime on top volume, people blasting TikTok. Kids being stabbed in broad daylight, people shooting up heroin near the nearby primary school. The area has a lot going for it but it really seems wherever I go there is an awful decline.
Has anybody feeling the same actually moved out? Do you regret it?

The crime rate has indeed gone up in the last 20 years - by nigh on 50%.

This shows the crime rate in London down over the last ten years. Do you have figures for the last twenty to support your assertion?

When I visited London over Christmas I noticed how run down and grubby it was. Vomit all over the pavement, rubbish, homeless tents everywhere. I used to live in London in my twenties and it didn’t feel that dirty then. Guildford is also looking extremely neglected and when you drive out there were multiple fly tipping a next to the road. Absolutely disgusting. I currently live in a different country due to my decision to leave thanks to some of the recent decisions by labour and I see the street being jet washed, no rubbish, I never feel unsafe when walking around and people take care and respect their environment. People in the UK need to get a grip and stop acting like the world owes them something.

You must have left the country very recently then. Quite a rapid time to get the required documentation and move.

Sorry just catching up. Some really valid points.
I think another issue, if I really did think about it, in my area, integration hasn’t really worked and there are bubbling tensions between remaining working class folk, the new cohort of young hipsters and the migrant population. I know people get uncomfortable talking about immigration and race, but in many areas around me there is a dominant population (Bangladeshi) who have failed to assimilate, whereby we are now on to 2nd and 3rd generation families where the children don’t mix with the white working class children, don’t speak English etc. My children are past school age but our nearest school children with English as a foreign language as of 2022 statistics is 92%- these are mostly children born and raised in this country. You have whole schools of Bangladeshi children and whole schools of white and black children- with the sides never ever really mixing.
I am a very liberal leftist and I would not have believed what I see here until I saw it with my own eyes.
I think we do have to have an honest conversation about how we see the future of London and other areas when we have groups that will not integrate and do not want to do so. We also need to be honest about the cultural differences (IE litter dropping, sanitation) and start to educate communities in how we ‘operate’ in this country. This would stop tensions perhaps?

Odd I never see the Farage rioters blamed for not integrating. Do you think they encourage their children to invite their Bangladeshi neighbours to play?

All children at school learn to speak English.

This not my experience of London at all. I've lived here for nearly 40 years and it's great. I can't remember the last time I saw any dog shit, people doing drugs etc. it's incredibly clean considering the size and population . I never feel unsafe at all.

I love the history, all the things to do, the variety, the tourists, the multi cultural atmosphere.

There seems to be a lot of that in other parts of the country sadly.

The only thing that's changed is it closes much earlier than it used to do post covid. I wish it went back to being a 24 hour city.

I lived in London for 35 years, mostly Queensway, Mayfair and Chelsea. Now l've been in Bristol for 20 years. The people are more friendly, you're near the country and you can get a very nice house for what my rather small flat off the King's Road was worth. But unfortunately Londoners are moving in:-)

Inkyblue123 · 18/01/2025 23:11

Yes - totally agree - since Covid it the cult of self. Nobody gives a shit about anyone but themselves, smoking crack outside the primary school in broad daylight , fly tipping, mugging, stabbing a - also we live on the boundary of an LTN so it’s pushed a lot of the anti social stuff onto our roads - clearly nobody want to be snapped on camera buying drugs. The local council couldn’t give a toss as long as they are racking in the cash.

The area has a lot going for it

doesn’t sound like it!! It sounds horrid frankly.

Camberwell was pretty ghastly when I used to visit my daughter there 25 years ago, but it improved as the area became gentrified. Maybe now it's gone down again.

This is very true. I lived briefly for university in a northern town many years ago and yes, the transport was awful. I’m grateful for being so connected but I feel like I’m not connected to anything remotely enjoyable or useful anymore. There are so many more people crammed in to things and so much more dirt and filth. Our local parade of shops is completely empty and boarded up.

Gangs of men lingering in groups (not sure if gang or drugs?)
I’ve never really felt unsafe here but the last 2-3 years it feels like something is brewing under the surface constantly. You see a lot more visible drug users. I’ve never once seen a beat Bobby either.

The crime rate has indeed gone up in the last 20 years - by nigh on 50%.

The UK has been in managed decline since the end of WW2. The pandemic and Brexit have just made it steeper.
I agree with beguilingeyes that much of London is far better than it was in the 1980's. Also there are less homeless people than there were when the housing law was change in the early 1990's- I used to work on the South Bank in 1993 one morning I counted 27 homeless people asking for money , between Embankment station and the stage door at the National Theatre.

Beautifulweeds · 18/01/2025 22:11

I think this is pretty much the same everywhere in towns and cities. If fortunate to live in a lovely idyllic village ot may be different.

The town we live in used to be bustling, fantastic shopping and pubs on an evening. Now it's like a ghost town, minimal shops, mostly big chains, all the niche ones have gone, same as the pubs.

The town centre just has some basic shops like poundland, the main area with a garden is used by drunk people and immigrants. When I say immigrants I mean coach loads transported to the area so it has become visually prolific. My job is to help them and not their fault they have been taken to a specific area and can't work due to status so yes they do get together in big groups and this is intimidating to the original population.

The whole before technology days of meeting up has changed so much, meeting friends to shop then going out at night.

So yes, a whole mix of things, mostly technology I think. Xx

Hoppingabout · 18/01/2025 22:00

London seems richer these days and many areas are so much nicer than in the 80s. Much of south London was terrifying driving through it. There was still quite a lot of areas that had been bombed in the war and not fixed. Deptford and Catford were really run down as was Streatham, Brixton etc. Now much nicer. London is much more boring now though although that may be because I'm old and boring myself.

SuperStarAnise · 18/01/2025 21:56

It’s true. London is declining. I’m in West London which once upon a time was lovely. The number of chicken shops, barber shops, cake shops and other bazaar type shops is crazy! Literally how many do you need in one town?! Bigger story of late these types of shops are under cover money laundering schemes. Look into it!
Fly tipping, anti social behaviour, packed buses with people watching their crappy stuff on high volumes, not paying for their fares… makes my blood boil. Sick of it!
Thanks that felt like therapy #rantover 😂

Is this country-wide then? I don’t often travel elsewhere

Smallish town in Cornwall, not a deprived area historically. Massive increase in break-ins, antisocial behaviour, theft, car crime etc over the last few years. Not on the same scale as other areas but definite decline in the past few years.

Of course it is. Several local authorities, including Birmingham, have gone bankrupt in the last few years.

TheGander · 18/01/2025 21:32

I agree about the dogs but so many people have dogs now and that goes with a certain blindness to their unhygienic and anti social effects, say it and you get shot down in flames. Just saw an X L bully today, its balls very much still there, no muzzle.

coldcallerbaiter · 18/01/2025 21:06

amoreoamicizia · 17/01/2025 12:59

The dog shit thing is everywhere now, it's absolutely vile to the extent that I wouldn't call this a clean country any more. There should be a dog licence to fund mobile dog poo cleaning and sanitisation by councils.

Ban dogs shitting on streets and parks or ban dogs altogether. Make it a crime. Picking it up still leaves remnants. We are walking it in to everywhere we go, shops, hospitals, homes.

1.London stinks of skunk weed all the time.

2.Too many deliveroo/uber eats black scooters driven by people clearly learned to drive in 3rd world w no rules. All black clothes, black scooter - zero visibility.
3.too many men just sitting around all day, getting approached by others … in parks, corners etc
4.too many people w face covering & hoody all the time
5.too many those stupid really loud cars
6.too many people cheering the shoplifters
7.too many e-bikes dumped in the street
8.too many of the illegal high speed scooters
9.rubbish out not following the rules

and yes, those scum who let their “security” dogs shit in street and don’t pick it up.

There’s street sweepers out most days because people just can’t put rubbish in bins or collect dog poop & put it in the poop-bin. There’s poop right in front of the poop-bin most days, how effing lazy or disinterested must’ve be to do that?

and the dogs off lead … especially the bully ones.

I would agree that certain parts of London post COVID have these issues. Mostly seen in suburbs of London; see Croydon as a clear example.

It’s already happened in some parts of Britain.
I’ve visited London twice this year and love the place. Apart from house prices I don’t know what you’re moaning about tbh. Some need to get out of their bubble a bit.

Don't be daft, take a look at Los Angeles, Philladelphia or San Francisco, there's shocking drug use, anti social behaviour and poverty in these places..

I live in a relatively small ex-mining town in Yorkshire.

It’s fire up here too. We’ve had murders, stabbings, shootings and gang violence (all drug related) over the past few years.

Most high-street shops are boarded up with charity shops, kebab shops, Vietnamese nail bars and Turkish barbers left. Nowhere for the elderly or disabled who can’t drive to do their food shopping. We used to have a supermarket, independent butchers, greengrocers, clothing shops, cobblers etc. all closed now.

The high-street is full of teenagers causing a nuisance on electric scooters and bikes, vandalising properties and shouting abuse at passers by.

The streets are constantly littered with dog shit and junk, takeaway boxes strewn away, sofas left in front gardens, scrap metal, fly tipping in country lanes.

A lot of kids round here are dragged up and not brought up. Small children roam the streets and their parents don’t give a fuck with havoc they cause.

There’s a lot of political division and racism. About 10 minutes away there’s a Holiday Inn that got smashed up and set on fire that was holding asylum seekers due to the “protests” and riots stemming from the awful Southport murders.

It’s fucking dire. Obviously I don’t speak for the majority or whole of Yorkshire. Just my hometown. A lot of Yorkshire is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful and the people are great. It’s just the awful ones that ruin it for the rest of us.

Absolutely. I live over the Pennines in another god forsaken ex mill town and it sounds pretty much like where you live (funnily enough I’m from Yorks but moved in the 90s). The town I live in was actually ok at first but the decline started around 2010. Multiple libraries and Surestarts quickly shut which were a godsend when my kids were toddlers, massive cuts to council spending, most chain shops have left to be replaced by Vape shops and dodgy tanning parlours. Hate to say it but the demographic has also changed dramatically because essentially it’s cheap to house folk here.

bombastix · 18/01/2025 20:52

@VoodooRajin - used to motorcycle in but frankly the roads got busier... and more dangerous!

It's not London. It is post-Brexit UK.
Not that we did not warn it...

Or post-covid.
I don't think Brexit has much to do with it tbh

VoodooRajin · 18/01/2025 20:31

bombastix · 18/01/2025 20:02

Well it's just more crowded! I suppose one example is my living in a sleepy bit of London where the trains barely had anyone on them. 20 years on and they are rammed.

So its hard living in londin because the trains are rammed? Could you cycle?

Peckham no go 10 years ago is ridiculously overstated.

Streets in Peckham, like so many parts of outer London, are very varied. Parts are very gentrified and others can still be rough.
