To wonder what could Starmer do, to turn things around?

He was elected on fewer votes than Corbyn with very lukewarm support, the Tories lost that election, Labour did not sweep in on a tide of public approval, they just benefitted from peoples anger at the Conservatives. Since then, Starmers approval rating has tanked. He seems to have gone from one ill judged move to the next and seems totally tone deaf in speeches. Can he turn it around? What would he need to do?

Not sure. How many Labour/Lib Dem/Tory/Green MPs have criminal records? Are criminal records unique to Reform?

Have a look at the candidates they fielded. What a shower.

Given some posts on mn I wouldn’t be surprised and how much posters filter to stick to pro Labour threads / media and posts

Much harder these days granted as they have little to go on and it’s easy picking for the press, but then some think mn made up the bond reaction so that’s pretty full on limitation

MadmansLibrary · 16/01/2025 14:43

@kirbykirby Aside from questioning how you would even know what benefits your neighbour receives, there's no way they're getting £350pw unless they have children with disabilities. In which case, I would say the poor buggers have enough to be getting on with, don't you think?

I think some avoid any not pro Labour stuff so any other media and economic insight feels ‘made up’

That would be extremely difficult, given that the vast majority of mainstream media is right leaning.

"Things are actually better ( economy stronger , inflation slower) than people thought - the made up on MN economic crisis from last weekend is still being held at back "

I don't think that the bond market turmoil and highest interest rates since 2008 has been made up on MN:

So inflation is lower than expected and the economy grew

these are facts

People might want more and faster but they should learn a dash of realism

Growth was lower than expected. That part is missing

Compare the first half of 2024 to after the GE and that’s the problem for Starmer and co, created by them

Sorry, but who's 'raking in' large sums of tax free benefits? Sounds like a Daily Mail headline

What about any type of benefit can be described as raking it in?

My neighbour gets over £350 per week in housing benefits alone! That's over £18k just for housing! Those not eligible have to make £18k after tax just to be equal.

Speak for yourself. I voted Labour fully aware that difficult decisions would have to be made.

Me too. Anyone who thought they were voting for unicorns and rainbows was delusional.

Motomum23 · 16/01/2025 13:42

He could resign. No one in this country wants this government - those who did vote Labour didn't expect this shitshow.

Resign and emigrate.

Where to ? We don’t have freedom of movement anymore. Screwed that up didn’t we 😂

Nice.

Discuss the truth of how Brexit has made us poorer and rejoin the single market. Pass a law where the top paid person in a company can't make more than a certain multiple of the lowest paid person's wages.

@midgetastic what do you mean by 'normal' MPs? And why are Reform MPs any different? They were elected by their constituents who they represent in Parliament. Just like any other Party except Sinn Fein.

He hasn’t pissed off this WASPI pensioner. Musk and Farage are disrupters who will be a thorn in the side of any PM. Five months in polls are meaningless - look at what happened to the Tories’ poll ratings in five years.

He hasn't pissed off this WASPI pensioner either. The media has had it in for him from day 1 though.

"”Economically inactive” covers various scenarios, including sickness, early retirement, studying, and having caring responsibilities. You can see the breakdown here."

Believe me for the right salary a large number of those off sick, in early retirement or studying will very quickly come back to the job market

Part of the problem with the high number in long term sickness is that it pays a higher benefit than unemployment does.

midgetastic · 16/01/2025 14:15

Normal MPs represent their constituents
They turn up in parliament , they turn up at their consisituancy office .. the day to day work of being an MP

Well I did vote labour and k don't think it's a shit show - so don't put words into other peoples mouths thank you

I am actually glad that they are getting on with the work rather than getting stuck in silly short term responses to the latest online winge

Right wing wingers who got us in this mess in the first place stropping like a toddler when it can't be fixed NOW

@Cattenberg

"And what about in 20 years’ time, when we have millions more retirees , and thanks to the current low birth rate, not nearly enough young workers to replace them?"

Well in 20 years time the retirement age will simply be higher and most likely will be financially worse off. But it will pass in one generation.

But if you import large numbers of workers today to pay for the current number of pensioners then in 40 years time you need to import even more workers to pay for the higher number of pensioners and so on in some kind of Ponzi scheme of an ever growing population that places an impossible strain on infrastructure, health care, education, the economy and the environment.

As for the replacement of workers, as I said there are 9 million economically inactive in the UK today.

Who are the millions of Britons not working, and why? - BBC News

About a quarter of the working age population - those aged 16 to 64 - do not currently have a job.
