To always dress my baby in a sleepsuit

My baby is 3 months old and he only wears vests and sleepsuits. We have a few outfits that were gifted but I don't put him in them really because changing is a faff. Even body suits with socks, the socks don't stay on so fuck that. I've started taking him to baby classes now and in the 3 classes we've been to he was the only one in a sleepsuit. Does nobody else do what I do or is it like, considered lazy or something like if I came to baby class in my pyjamas?

Thus. The reverse snobbery of those who pontificate about dressing their babies kb the only sensible outfit as it's supposedly more comfortable etc is unbearable.

Dress your bavy how you want and let others do likewise.

Beaten only by the secondary snobbery of those who think they’re morally above either party..!

The only judgement on here really has been about those who dress babies in the stiffer uncomfortable jeans (which some people seem to refuse to believe exist).

Babies in babygros are totally fine, I reckon. Babies don't have a waist, their tummy is the biggest bit, so tops ride up, trousers wriggle down, socks fall off. A babygro keeps them warm, comfy and held together. Mine were in them pretty much all the time as babies, and then dungarees and tights were very handy for toddlers, as they stop the same issues!

Babies look adorable in babygros.

Ultimately all the worry about jeans/babygros etc is all just about in-group signalling that you are dressing your kid in the current 'correct' outfit for your child for your section of society in this point in time. None of it matters in terms of a baby being warm, comfortable and clean.

He is your baby, you can dress him however you like so long as he's clean, warm and comfortable. Plenty of time later for other clothing.

LazyArsedMagician · 16/01/2025 10:25

My twins I dressed in proper clothes every single day, they looked ridiculous, they were SO tiny!

My third - babygros all the way lol! I did have clothes for him, but at 3 months I just didn't bother. When he was born he was more than the weight of both his brothers put together

Burntt · 16/01/2025 10:09

Some people will definitely judge. I wouldn't take my kid out in a sleep suit past 3 months but I wouldn't judge anyone for being practical. So long as the clothes are clean don't worry about what others think of you

I wouldn't judge another mum for doing that but it's not what I'd do myself.
It has happened on occasion but only because I've been running really late and have 3 kids.. so ivd just chucked a sleepsuit on the baby.
I'm a real slob on mumsnet terms.. I go out with wet hair, I don't get dressed if I'm not going out lol.. but I always make sure my kids are dressed well to go anywhere.
I also actually think sleepsuits can sometimes be more of a faff to change than ordinary clothes.. for example if my daughters nappy leaks she might get a bit on her tights.. I can just change the tights.. whereas if she had a sleepsuit on I'd have to change the whole thing. If she spills milk on her jumper I can just change the jumper etc
And also I personally love little outfits on babies and have enjoyed dressing all mine up. It's super cute and part of the joy of having a baby for me. However I know some mums don't care at all about that, and that's totally fine. I don't think there is a right or wrong. As long as your baby is comfortable and warm enough

This! I find sleepsuits far harder to deal with than seperates. When my dc was tiny it was leggings and tops. I find babygrows really awkward personally.

mrsmacmc · 15/01/2025 23:58

DD was in sleepsuits till around 6 months (she did have 'day' ones and bedtime ones!) she was comfy and clean. Folk probably eye rolled about it but it worked for us! We then moved onto leggings with long sleeve vests again comfort over 'style' FWIW I don't like seeing wee ones dressed as mini adults and can count on one hand the number of times DD has been in a dress as not practical really for crawling 🤷‍♀️

My babies lived in sweet baby grows until they were about 9mo. That's when I started putting different outfits on them.

I love a baby in a baby grow 🥰

Years ago in the sixties (how ancient am I?) We put our babies up to three months in a vest and vyella long nightdresses with little matinee jackets and with little bonnets when going out. If cold warmer clothes were put on. From three months on either little dresses or sleeping type suits etc.romper suits. But those soft nightdresses were very comfy for a little one and easy to change. The vests were pure cotton and the shoulders were made so easy to pull off. Nappies were Terry towelling with often a muslin lining. Bottoms were washed (not wipes) and covered in zinc and castor oil. So no raw bottoms. There endeth your history lesson for today. 🤣

My younger sibling was born in 1969 & I was trying to remember what she wore as a baby. I think nightgowns briefly, but then Babygros seemed to really take off in the UK. It was akin to having a colour TV; other mums came round to see this new marvel!

ParsonBrown · 15/01/2025 23:05

Both of mine were in baby grows until they started walking. Don't sweat it x

Eenameenadeeka · 15/01/2025 23:03

It's such a short stage, and they are comfortable!

SwisswolvesLilley · 15/01/2025 22:58

I always did this. My MIL knitted beautiful bonnets and booties so I just put them over the sleepsuits. I never understood the faff of putting them in tiny outfits.

couraggio · 15/01/2025 22:34

Mine were permanently in sleep suits until they could walk (16 months for one and 18 months for the other). Much comfier for them and easier for me.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 15/01/2025 22:01

God it's January. A sleep suit is the only logical choice when trying to get them into an outdoor onesie thing. It's like dressing an uncooperative cat at the best of times

"Dressing up" I only did when we had visitors who had gifted outfits. DD was so pukey nothing lasted long anyway!

Negangirlxx · 15/01/2025 21:20

We dress ours in a short sleeved bodysuit, and a long sleeved sleep suit. We tried putting her in dresses, and she hates them. Same for sets with a top and leggings. So we do what’s easier for us, and what she is comfortable in.

MoreRainbowsPlease · 15/01/2025 21:10

My 2nd dc wore babygrows during the day until he was about a year. If we were going somewhere special I'd put him in an outfit, but just general day to day it was so much easier (and I felt more comfortable for him) to be in babygrows. I do remember though once when he was about 11 months old my dm (who is normally quite sane) said she was worried the school where dc1 went might report me for neglect as no other 11 month olds were wearing babygrows. I did tell her I thought she was over reacting!

We were the same, my babies wore sleepsuits pretty much all the time for the first 6 months and then about half the time still in the day from 6-9 months and then sleepsuits became only for night time from 9 months onwards.
did find that at baby groups we were normally the only one in sleepsuits

Commonsense22 · 15/01/2025 21:05

You'll be very hard pressed to find a mum whose baby is wearing an outfit criticising another mum for dressing a baby in a babygrow.

On the other hand, the self-righteousnss of those who choose the sleepsuits for whatever reason is always readily on display, especially on here. Along with a heavy dose of judgement gorgeous anyone who does differently.

OP you have nothing to worry about - you'll receive validation aplenty from the babygrk crowd and nobody else will notice.

ThePoliteLion · 15/01/2025 20:58

My babies wore babygros with a cardigan or jumper pretty well all the time. I almost wished I hadn’t been gifted some sweet baby “outfits” because I had no use for them. With a small baby, you need to make your life as easy as possible. So easy to pop on a babygro

Nottodaty · 15/01/2025 20:53

My eldest was a sickly colicky baby we went through a fair number of ‘outfits’ before just changing her into a babygro.Id be lucky to get a couple of hours before needing change her again.

Second one I just stuck with babygro (she wasn’t a sickly baby) it was just easier. She had a couple of leggings tops - easy and comfy clothes. Around 6/7 months would dress her in baby clothes (leggings etc) day to day.

Tights huge faff, dresses both daughters got frustrated with crawling into them, jeans always felt cold on a baby - joggers/leggings just easier and baby can be a baby rolling and exploring.

Basically, some people think it’s common, and some people think it’s common to find it common. Ah, the British Class System 🤡
