Been at work all day cooked put the DS to bed who is a pain for bedtime takes me a good 45 minutes to get him to sleep. Finally come downstairs to relax and have a cuppa DH is watching his fav YouTubers one after eachother. Really cringy childish stuff I can’t stand it. Had a huge argument about it and he’s gone upstairs in a huff and kicked the bin over!!

Am I supposed to just go along with what he wants.

I honestly think I’d leave a man over something like this. I associate anyone who watches YouTube in this way with conspiracy theorists and those worship Andrew Fucking Tate. It feels like a slippery slope for an already weak mind…

I think we should use this thread to recommend all the good stuff on YouTube.

I nominate JCS Criminal Psychology channel. Someone has also uploaded all of the Ricky Gervais Show cartoon series.

I see they've deleted the last one because everyone kicked off about the AI voiceover.

I've just subscribed to a bunch of budgeting and healthy eating channels. I watch a few "disaster" channels which explain why buildings collapsed, why train crashes have happened etc. I love Super Eyepatch Wolf who does deep dives into different subjects and somehow makes them fascinating even when I have no interest in the subject. Also, several cat/dog channels.

Youtube literally has videos on any subject you could possibly want.

😄 okay I'm willing to die on this hill

Watching YouTube as a grown man is icky! Watch a proper show on a proper streaming platform

That's bizarre. It's like complaining about a man watching the BBC news because CBeebies exists.

So your man comes home from work

Cracks open the wine or a beer and says

I wonder what my favourite youtuber is up to???? Let me put on the tv and find out??? 😄 unacceptable!!

@TightlyLacedCorset

Pull down projector screen and projector mounted on the ceiling. It has a chromecast doodah in one of the usb ports. We've had it for years. I wouldn't ever have a tv again.

There is so much more to it. I watched a video earlier today that showed how to take apart my shower drain. Loads of educational stuff on there. I use it loads and I'm a middle aged woman.

I feel like being sat watching YouTube on your phone/ipad briefly for a tutorial on something is fine

But i couldnt get on with a man sat down watching YouTube like its tv 😬

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 14/01/2025 21:48

Ew that would give me the ick tbh, a grown man watching YouTube, dunno why 😄😄

I think it is for kids and make up tutorials

Yanbu

There is sooo much content on YouTube. It is a wee bit more than make up tutorials, but I guess it depends on what exactly he's watching.

Wateroffacatsback · 14/01/2025 23:00

Please try to relax.

I'm relaxing to NPR on YouTube 👍🏻

Nightmarewithdelirium · 14/01/2025 22:58

Yeah he's a dick. If it's the main tv then you watch something you both enjoy. If I wanted to watch something DH would hate I'd go and do it somewhere else or wait until a time he wasn't there.
DH does that with football even and he loves football.. but he will always ask if its OK to watch on the main tv.. he wouldn't just put it on as he knows I hate it so it's antisocial.

Ger1atricMillennial · 14/01/2025 22:57

OP... why is your husband behaving aggressively when you ask him to watch something else (which I assume you both enjoy)?

corvidconvo · 14/01/2025 22:57

I'm not sure how watching YouTube is any different to anything else he might have been watching on tv. Couples often have different tastes in programming, and there's always an element of compromise or turn-taking.

He shouldn't have gone into a huff, but it's annoying when someone complains about your choice of entertainment and interrupts when you are enjoying something. The two of you just need to come to an understanding about what happens when you want to watch different things at the same time. Sharing your toys isn't just for kids.

Endofyear · 14/01/2025 22:53

I would have taken myself to bed and watched what I wanted on my kindle! But if you want to relax in the living room, you could have reached a compromise - maybe 1/2 hour of his YouTube crap and then you get to choose something else to watch?

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 14/01/2025 22:51

Wateroffacatsback · 14/01/2025 22:47

Watch a proper show on a proper streaming platform!

Ok 🤷🏻‍♀️ You die on that hill and I'll crack on watching documentaries, enjoying gems from the BBC archive, following Dean and Nala's adventures round the world on 1bike1world, and discovering new music on NPR's Tiny Desk Sessions.

I'll also thank YouTube for most of our home renovations as my handy husband used YouTube tutorials to help him with everything from tiling, to plumbing, to carpentry. Hardly ick.

This is a very dramatic overreaction to my lighthearted comments 🙄

I've said that YouTube for diy is great too and I've used it for that

Please try to relax.

And yes, I'm standing by my icks 🥰

SpikeGilesSandwich · 14/01/2025 22:49

If he's watching something you don't like, either say you'd like to watch something together or go upstairs and watch something on your iPad or whatever. I don't see the big deal. I can't stand YouTubers, my DH isn't into them but he sometimes watches sport on tv which I hate so I just leave him to it, it's his house too.

TightlyLacedCorset · 14/01/2025 22:48

Wateroffacatsback · 14/01/2025 22:12

I watch so much YouTube I pay for YouTube premium. We don't have a television and we cast what we want to watch from YouTube, Netflix etc onto a large projector.

If my husband came in and did what you did while I was enjoying what I like to watch on YouTube, I'd feel like kicking a bloody bin as well.

You have a projector?!

I have no TV either and mostly watch YT and Amazon Prime. That sounds ideal. Is it an old style projector?

poemsandwine · 14/01/2025 22:42

You couldn't have watched something else on laptop with headphones? I love YT, though. So much I pay for it. The anti-mlm channels run on loop when I do boring chores.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 14/01/2025 22:38

Wateroffacatsback · 14/01/2025 22:36

It feels icky honestly because i only ever used it as a teen so it doesn't seem age appropriate for a grown up but I accept that there's more to it

This is such a strange thing to say. It's just a media platform. There are millions of things on there.

Imho, what you are watching on which channel, or the device you are watching it on, is not the issue really.

It’s just difficult sometimes as a married couple to communicate about how each of you want to spend your down time together.

Some couples let life flow spontaneously. Others prefer a more curated approach. And many of us have a mix of both.

It’s very easy to get in to the habit of making an effort for children, family and friends and others in your life, such as colleagues, while you and your spouse fall in to a familiar pattern of unsatisfying low level interaction eg watching telly or You Tube together. Blokes are particularly bad at this sometimes I think.

If you are feeling slightly disconnected from one another, or you are very different in your approach to down time, it can lead to problems over time.

I think it’s particularly important when you have young dc to properly connect with each other every three or four days by going out on a walk, or agreeing to eat a meal and watch a film together or just go out for a coffee, or just get in to the habit of having a drink together and discussing the day before any devices go on.

So I am voting that you are both being unreasonable op. Your dh for just selfishly doing what he wants as though you are not in the room. And you for getting in a huff and not discussing this issue with him and suggesting that you agree to do things differently.

It’s probably not so much the choice of channel that angered you, it’s that you felt ignored and disrespected in your own home maybe? And that you weren’t consulted?

JadedVeryJaded · 14/01/2025 22:37

Another thread that makes me so glad not to be married any more.

Baital · 14/01/2025 22:37

It also has lots of audio books, including Terry Pratchet 😍 it's like any other media source, has plenty of mindless crap (from my definition of mindless crap, of course!) and plenty of good content. I don't want to watch everything that's on BBC iplayer either, though it has lots I do want to watch.

I mean technically it's demonstrably not for kids as you have to be 13 to use it unsupervised according to the TOS.

I watch loads of science, cooking, news and history stuff on there, very narrow view you have if you think it's just for "kids and makeup".

Im fine with having a narrow view on the various uses of YouTube 😄
