Cancel Culture, is it over?

AIBU to think that the vibe has shifted? I think it has, something about Trudeau standing down seems to confirm this.

But I know there are still people (often those trying to engage in it) who say it never even was a thing. Was it?

Maybe it's still in full force. But it feels like something has changed. Does it take a while for everyone to realise?

Did he not preside over many of the worst cancel tactics? The debanking of those who donated to the truckers convoy for example.

Ardern, Sturgeon, and now Trudeau all out and Trump back in. Seems to be quite a comprehensive rejection of hyperliberalism.

I think that you are onto something. I peaked over Covid when we were all put under house arrest for two years. I'm in Scotland and Sturgeon was a nightmare who was also corrupt as fuck.

The idea that these right wing, libertarians are all free speech absolutists is a joke. They are some of the most whiny, thin-skinned, 'can dish it out but can't take it' individuals I've ever encountered.

Trumps entire raison d'etre for being President is to settle scores with people who have been mean to him. Elon Musk's tweets are as juvenile and ignorant as those tweeted by racist, women-hating incels from their bedrooms.

Somewhat trivialising racism but OK.

Any examples of right wing cancellations?

Is 'cancel culture' the modern term for a witch hunt influenced by the media?

It's something liberals do to stop people saying things that they believe will be a threat to their power. Most often because what they are trying to suppress is actually true and if other people hear it, it will break the spell.

What's the difference between cancel culture and people not wanting to support someone whose actions you don't support?

Edited

Depriving people of their livelihood and utterly ostracising them for things that they themselves believed 5 minutes ago (or still do when they're being honest)

Not buying a ticket for an event is not supporting an event.

Threats, harassment, assault, getting huge gangs of people to shout, scream, bang drums, blow whistles, bang on windows, follow the attendees down the street, threaten to destroy the event hosts livelihoods, threaten their families, bomb threats, threaten the management if they don't cancel or sack the person who booked the event is cancel culture. It is actually terrorism but the police usually look away if they even turn up. Or simply cease to fund something if they put a foot wrong and refuse entry to the wrong types of people. Or nail rats to the door, intimidation is quite the thing in Vancover.

I hate the term 'cancel culture', it's actually just people often middle class white men who have historically not been held accountable facing consequences for saying and/or doing abhorrent things.

It's usually women that I've seen crucified tbf. If a bloke genuinely says something offensive then that's fair, but usually it's used to refer to people being shut down because their views don't align with the latest trends.

Anybody who doesn't believe in it should try voicing the opinion that humans can't change sex and see what happens at work. Women have been sacked and visited by the police for such serious transgressions. I don't lose too much sleep over the gender debate tbh but I still think things are bonkers nowadays in some institutions.

If a woman says that a biological man doesn't belong in a woman's prison or refuge or rape crisis centre, in what sense would it be legitimate to support them losing their jobs and livelihoods as a result?

Because that has happened to women.

Go woke, go broke, is a real thing, a movement.

I think its getting worse, the right cancelling anything even vaguely seen as 'woke', whatever the fuck that means as it seems to cover anything that Trump might disagree with.

The whole of Social Media- X, Insta, Facebook all have their noses so far as Trumps ass , pulling back on moderation , its all going to become more of a cesspit (if that possible) and a dangerous place for kids, that all these tech firms pretend to give a shit about it, but never have.

Populism sells, its never been good for profits to be academic and careful.

Yup.

And one thing about right wing cancel culture, in the US at least, is that it's not just a grass roots thing, their politicians do it too.

Trump, while in office, called for NFL players "taking the knee" to be fired, called for boycotts of news outlets he doesn't like, has called for individual journalists to be fired, threatened to close down social media companies he deemed unaligned with him, called for boycotts of specific companies/products, etc etc etc.

Most people seem to only notice and take issue with "cancel culture" when they disagree with a particular instance of it.

Gillian Phillip
Louise Distras
Graham Lineham
amongst others

Germaine Greer FFS - I'm still furious about that one

labamba007 · 12/01/2025 22:25

I kind of know what you mean, OP. There's a shift to the right and away from cancel culture (unless it's women like Amber Heard or now Blake Lively), DEI, LGBTQ+ awareness months etc. more and more companies and governments seem to be getting rid of more liberal policies and culture.

I dislike some overly liberal policies but I don't think this pendulum swing will be a good thing!

tailinthejam · 12/01/2025 22:24

B0xes · 12/01/2025 20:31

OK. It's a bit unfair that you are asking me to explain something to you that you have also declared a complete disinterest in. That's rude and insulting.

Oh do give over. Perhaps if you'd been able to explain it better I might have been more interested.

I'm on the other side of the pond, but the highest profile "canceling" I can think of was when Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem, to protest racism (which became symbolic of the BLM movement). The right wing were outraged at his "unpatriotic" actions (even Trump - as president - speaking up to call for kneeling players to be fired).

Kaepernick, despite being an excellent player, did not have his contract renewed and no other club was willing to sign him, due to right wing pressure, so he never played in the NFL again.

There are numerous examples of right wing boycotts of companies for being "too woke", and sometimes those companies have buckled. The phrase "go woke, go broke" being the usual rallying cry, from people who will also happily bemoan cancel culture.

Bud Light being boycotted for hiring a transgender spokesperson was a big, fairly recent one (notable for being egged on by right wing media who bemoan cancelling). Lots of drag queens have lost opportunities as a result of right wing protests and pressure.

It's all incredibly commonplace.

tobee · 12/01/2025 22:06

I think the right wing use different tactics.

Chiseltip · 12/01/2025 22:03

We never had "cancel culture", what we had/have is a system of Social Credit.

People speak about China and how repressive their regime is, but ours is worse I think. Any of us can be filmed and the footage put on the Internet for all to judge, without context or understanding, just thousands of keyboard fanatics baying for blood. It's easier for establishments to side with the Xmob than it is for them to take a public position and risk thir own "credit".

How many of you are already biased towards certain groups or individuals? how many of you recognise that you would also grab your digital pitch fork to demand "justice for . . ."

tobee · 12/01/2025 22:02

I think you'd have to not get out much and only read stuff that already backed your opinion if you thought only white men were bigoted. An extraordinary thought.

I came to the conclusion Sturgeon stood down because she knew the shit was going to hit the fan re the camper van, the arrests of Colin, Peter, NS herself and all those shenanigans.

Surely everyone can agree that bud light deserved to have their arse handed to them for the piss-take of woman hood that was the DMaerobics routine.

Wasn't that Nike, rather than BudLite?

They definitely deserved more heat. That was excruciating.

You must hang out in very...specific circles then. Practically everyone I know supports her.

dottiehens · 12/01/2025 21:45

Yes, and about bloody time. Most people realised that the ones calling for this are either hypocrites or cuckoos like Trudeau types. So much was destroyed with that rubbish though. Some people should be ashamed of themselves. People and business went broke and some even committed suicide.

GeneralPeter · 12/01/2025 21:40

@HappyPanda613

[GC] sort of shattered the illusion I had that bigotry was exclusively the realm of white men.

Did you really think bigotry was exclusively the realm of white men? And you now think it’s exclusively the realm of white men plus GC feminists?

You have a remarkably eurocentric model of the world.

The Rape of Nanjing was, what, truly no better than the Chinese deserved? No bigotry in evidence?

The Rwandan genocidaires mere dumb puppets of the white man?

Caste-based discrimination in India is what, a foreign invention?

Do you have any examples of right wing cancellings? I'm not saying it hasn't happened. Some say the Fosters boycott was an example of this, do you agree? The left have had the power to do it where the right didn't

"Cancel culture" is when left wing outrage (and sometimes related boycotts) leads to someone's career or business being impacted.

The right wing do it too, but that's (apparently) okay. It's (apparently) only cancel culture if the left do it.

I’ve never come across any right-wing cancelling so far. Feel free to give some examples though..

MrsPeregrine · 12/01/2025 21:28

I think there is an election Canada in October and Pierre Poilievre seems to be quite popular so may have a good chance of becoming the next Canadian pm. That and Trump winning is probably a sign that people’s politics have shifted more towards the right which I think could be a sign that cancel culture could be coming to an end. What happens in America often seems to filter over here eventually so I wouldn’t be surprised. I do feel like comedy has suffered because of cancel culture. Everyone wants to play it safe because they are scared of being cancelled.
