Cancel Culture, is it over?

AIBU to think that the vibe has shifted? I think it has, something about Trudeau standing down seems to confirm this.

But I know there are still people (often those trying to engage in it) who say it never even was a thing. Was it?

Maybe it's still in full force. But it feels like something has changed. Does it take a while for everyone to realise?

@7plusthinking my apologies. I originally read it in the Telegraph which isn’t considered a balanced view on mn and I didn’t read all the BBC article before posting.
I will ask mn to remove my post as I do not want to condone antisemitism.

'Watered down' ??

You think the half assed 'culture wars' point scoring legislation from the Tories was fit for purpose? Allowing Andrew Tate and Holocaust deniers preaching hate on campus with a free hand? On the other foot it would have allowed extreme Muslims to preach.

The National Union of Jewish students called it an '"antisemite charter" for fucks sake.

The 'watering down' you call, is quoted as 'The Union of Jewish Students (UJS) welcomed the revised act, saying it "takes into account the concerns raised by UJS and other parties".'

House passes ban on males in womens sports in all federally funded schools - America is on a roll

It depends how one defines "perfectly reasonable opinions".

"Male rapists shouldn't be in womens prisons" - perfectly reasonable?

Trump and common sense in the same sentance , wow!

The only time that will happen is when a judge issues his sentence.

This. I would say he is a champion of free speech - yes he’s vociferous about those he disagrees with but who has he cancelled?

Apparently he's now canceling right wingers who he disagrees with on migration.

It's something liberals do to stop people saying things that they believe will be a threat to their power. Most often because what they are trying to suppress is actually true and if other people hear it, it will break the spell.

Oh, that's an interesting way of looking at it. The only time I've ever really come across the term it was for another purpose, but there you go. Not a set of circumstances I want to discuss on here, sorry, as it had the worst possible outcome.

Anniedash · 13/01/2025 13:13

There certainly seems to be a backlash against it. After all, there was only so long that people would go with madness such as state sponsored mutilation of children, women’s safe spaces and sport being erased, corrupt ‘anti-racist’ propaganda being used to engage in corrupt practices. The list is endless the fact that anyone went along with it all is an unfathomable mystery.

Trudeau went for a heck of a lot more than for cancel culture.

Is Musk a participant in Cancel Culture? In what way? I see him as someone who altered the moderation policies on the main platform for it to allow freer discourse. He permits views which don't align with his own.

I think that you are onto something. I peaked over Covid when we were all put under house arrest for two years. I'm in Scotland and Sturgeon was a nightmare who was also corrupt as fuck.

God I was happy when she went and I’m not even in Scotland.

It broke with Facebook because Biden and his party have been directing Facebook this whole time. He gave evidence of this in court ages ago. This is just the next step.

And Twitter before Musk bought it. Again, all brought out in court and released in The Twitter Files.

Yes, it is ending. There are people with their backs up because people have the audacity to bring up the Pakistani pedos again, and those threads are not getting pulled and are all over the news.
Also that the criticism of Rachel Reeves and Labour in general is now mainstream.

Criticism of Labour has always been mainstream 24/7/365 as long as I can remember - and I'm old.
Whereas organising an online campaign to sack a college porter because he is gender critical strikes me as a much more recent development. A lot of us old socialists don't think it is the job of a trade union to sack people.

@B0xes they failed because they're just not popular. Because right wing ideals aren't popular enough to cancel people over.

There might be something in that though. It is something done to the powerless by the powerful in a bid to maintain power. Is this an acknowledgement that the left have actually been in charge for the past decade?

Boots and Costa are not people? If I bother typing substantive posts for you, I don't expect you to agree but at least hope I'm addressing someone with the capacity to at least demonstrate that it was read and understood. You can disagree with the points raised, introduce others or go over something previous in more detail highlighting what you believe I haven't understood.

What are right wing ideals? Don't put male rapists in women's prisons? See, I think the vast majority of people ARE right wing then.

Yes,

But Musk also believes he is on the right side of history. The way you have been describing the issue around "cancel culture" also shows you see yourself on the side of "good" versus "woke". And that what is happening now is the REAL right side of history (that coincidentally happens to be all the things you support) is gaining ground now at last. The world is more complicated than that. And now I shall retire and cry my liberal tears.

Is Musk a participant in Cancel Culture? In what way? I see him as someone who altered the moderation policies on the main platform for it to allow freer discourse. He permits views which don't align with his own.

@B0xes you've not responded to my examples that I have you of the right wing attempting to cancel boots and Costa due to adverts they disagreed with.

Sorry, you're right. I think "attempts" is the point here. They weren't exactly successful. These are more boycotts than cancel culture though, which are different things. Boycotts predate cancel culture by a long shot, and in my opinion have always really been more of a leftist tactic against corporate evils.

Cancel culture, by my understanding (and I know this will be shared) tends to be against individuals, usually workers with very little power and is when people will put there efforts towards destroying that persons life to silence them and to silence others who might quietly agree with the target. They will be attacked, shamed, harassed, ostracised, intimidated and isolated. Anything to remove them from any platform they might have any power over and keep their views out of the discourse. Perhaps this is most common in the arts, publishing and academia? But the point is to frighten people into submission. A few people taking exception to an advert isn't really going to dent Boots. Boots is a big powerful target. Cancel culture is usually directed towards powerless individuals as a warning.
