President Trump: Why is his incoming administration desperate to destroy Europe with political and economic turmoil?

If it were China or Islamic State behaving in a way Trump and Musk are regarding Greenland, Canada, threats of regime change in the UK and essentially aggressively trying to destabilize every European ‘ally’, we’d be calling in Ambassadors, freezing assets etc.

They haven’t even been sworn in yet and are causing chaos and stress.

The way they are behaving you’d think they wanted armed conflict with all their allies.

Although I’m aware Trumps voters don’t care what we think of them, I don’t think many of the rest of the world will ever forgive them for what they’ve inflicted on the rest of us. Yes give into stupidity and feel good chanting four word slogans, but contain it within your own borders, don’t harm the rest of the world with it.

Hypothetical discussion since you're not prepared to disclose the source of the article.

No it's not, you surely have a set of objective standards you apply when discerning the quality of a publications truth claims, I'm asking you what they are. If I asked you how you know if a dish is cooked well or not, you surely have an expectation of what a well cooked dish would be like in order to judge the one in question, it would be odd not to. Unless of course, you're telling the truth, in which case your criteria is one of pure emotivism, in which case - how refreshing to admit it.

I understand why getting Greenland is in thier national interest

I dont quite get destabilising europe and regime change here though.

It's easier to plunder something if you break it apart first

What qualities would it require to be reputable? (I don't consider any source reputable)

Since you've declined to post the link it's not possible for anyone else to form an opinion on whether or not it's reputable.

That I'm lying and nobody wrote this? They certainly did write it! Why would I make that up? That's bizarre. My "references" - what are you talking about, it's not a study, someone wrote an opinion piece for an online magazine, I don't need any other reference for that claim other than link to the article itself. And what on earth is a reputable source these days? Such a thing no longer exists because they've all been caught lying.

That you're full of shit?

Take your pick 😁

There are several movements that resemble nihilistic death cults and this is just one of them. The fact so many of them have gained real traction and influence is a concern. If we could see a Venn diagram of their supporters, there's probably a big overlap between them.

Genuinely curious, how would you describe/categorise these separate movements? What makes them distinct from one another

ilovesooty · 11/01/2025 14:15

You and your cohort? Are you not acknowledging that people don't all have the same opinions about things? And as I said, no one knows you or cares about you enough to hate your guts.

B0xes · 11/01/2025 14:04

ilovesooty · 11/01/2025 13:55

What ridiculous hyperbole and insistence on personal motivation. So you're ackniweledging that posting your link might have resulted in reporting and a possible ban? We don't know you. Why should posters care about you personally to hate your guts?

It might. I don't know. I've been banmed from several subreddits for saying it's homophobic to say a lesbian can't have a penis.

But I think you're being disingenuous to pretend to you and your cohort want me silenced. I mean the other poster was saying Reform should be banned. That's an extremely authoritarian attitude and is very clear that means supporters should be punished if they are seen in any way to promote Reform. The purpose is to silence and punish political opponents.

When I said cultural, I was thinking currently so should have said that.
The food, music, gangs. The celebrity culture, sanctifying a criminal, and more.

I'm a modern jazz fan and also of old Hollywood.
They did steal European architecture and tart it up for the better as well, I say grudgingly. Arts and Crafts, Art Deco and Colonial.
Huge admirer of President Reagan and watch his YT compilations if feeling down. I worked for an American company.

So it's all old stuff and maybe Europe has changed for the worse too. Who knows, as it's mostly US news reported.

See I am not an admirer of Reagan at all! But I guess for me it is the trickle down economics I am thinking of, which I blame for a lot of the current issues in the world. You might be thinking of his dealings with Russia, or possibly disagree with me re economics. Its all nuanced...

I think the worst problem is American culture/news/drama's is so dominant. It always has been - America was best placed to dominate world culture post WW2 and most news agencies are based there. But its become much worse with social media/the internet. Maybe its because silicon valley is dominant but every single issue seems to be filtered through "how this supports my point about America". E.g. being told by UK people that we used to racially segregate toilets/bathrooms in the UK (we didn't) or that because I voted left I am a "liberal" who thinks (insert American lefty stereotype). Exhausting. Even people spelling Inquiry as Enquiry. Its not technically incorrect. But its very noticeably not the common British usage and it suggests they are getting their news from Twitter (or from people who get their news from Twitter).

And now they are going mad, so we have to go mad too apparently.

Also I should have said music! American blues and country music led directly to the rise of Skiffle in the UK. Which then morphed into British Rock Music in the 1960s (e.g. the Stones) who brought it back to the US. And Mo-town. Lots of good cultural benefits. But also they can be massive twats.

American conservatives will doom the world to a state of perpetual war over resources and territory but Western Europe is also following in their footsteps.

I don’t like to talk up the UK as that kind of rhetoric comes dangerously close to xenophobic nationalism but in this case we seem to be one of the few nations bucking the trend of slipping to the right.

Just because we have a slightly left wing government right now doesn't mean that we are bucking the trend. Reading and listening to opinions on here and elsewhere indicates that once this term is over, if Farage is still in charge of Reform, the UK will swing heavily to the right, particularly England. It's quite a scary medium and long term outlook from where I am sitting.

Because America is no longer has the power to act as the world's policeman so he is defending his countries national interest. He's doing his job, I wish our leaders would guard Britain's national interest.

You're clearly a moron

I'm not suggesting she's lying but I'd certainly be suspicious about the sources. I'm inclined to think that she's learned very quickly during her time on the site that's it's the sort of link that would be reported and removed and might result in a banning.

More than likely!

America First. Simple as that. He knows that a great deal rests on how he is perceived by the other large powers - China, Russia et al. He’s demonstrating that he’s unpredictable and doesn’t care about playing nice with them. Joe Biden’s placatory government with their obsession with identity politics and their horrendous exit from Afghanistan has made the US a disrespected laughing stock. He’s trying to turn it around and I don’t blame him one bit. I don’t care for the man myself but I’m glad the Republicans won and I think J D Vance is brilliant - the US are lucky to have him.

It's in Russia's interest. Follow the money. Farage and Trump both friends of Putin.

Its in what Putin considers his/Russia's interest, would be more accurate to say. Russia has been on a crazy self-destructive (but also trying to destroy everyone around them as well) tilt for quite a long time. So its better to thing "what would a crazy person with BPD who only sees things in terms of a zero-sum game do" rather than "what would rationally be in Russia's self interest right now." That was a mistake lots of countries made in the run up to the Ukraine war and meant they both antagonised Russia and believed Russia would never do something so self-destructive as to invade.
With America/Trump also its better to think in terms of what he would consider his best interests. Rather than what you would if you were in his exact same position.
